Should I stay or should I go now

in TravelFeed4 years ago

Not all too long from now a gap is falling into my work schedule and it is Summer. A normal 1+1 would tell me 'get the f.. out of here and explore the world' but 2020 is a different case of course for the whole world due to obvious reasons. So now the mind is having this internal debate of whether I should leave the country for a bit or not. A well thinking I know what I should do - versus- Ahhhhh let me just do what I want to do.

I guess tons more people are having this debate. If you were like me over the last couple of months, there was enough to do, which also means there are enough reasons why you would want to blow off some steam. Blowing off steam is for me exploring, finding places, discovering food, learning stories about the areas. Making no planning and seeing what happens. But that just isn't really possible and responsible at the moment, or is it? Do we really need to?

This image above we all know. This is Maho beach Sint Martin. The coolest place where you can see airplanes landing above your head. I lived close to this beach and it really is a tourist attraction for good reasons. I guess hardly anywhere in the world the planes land so close to you while standing in the water, or sipping on your margherita on the beach. Sint Martin has currently 36 active Covid-19 cases while last week this was still zero. A local outbreak in a casino and also a passenger from a relief flight had brought this back again.

Now 36 cases doesn't sound like a lot, but on a island with no ways out and 3 ICU beds originally this really is a big deal. Also with being fully dependent on tourism this is a serious issue. Originally the boarders with the US were supposed to open again August 1st. I am not sure if this will happen leading to another surge of lack of income.

These relief flights are a challenging thing. Yes they bring people home, and yes they bring income to people. But they also bring virusses around. Maybe not infecting the people on the plane, but maybe 3 days later you develop your symptoms and you would test positive while before the mandatory PCR test was nice and sweet negative. And boom, another local outbreak.

That is the thing with travel at the moment. Actually we should all do a 2 week mandatory self quarantine after visiting a new area, even if it is in your own country. So imagine doing a cruise, or a road trip. And visiting a bar afterwards.
To me this sounds like super spreader scenario 101 happening these week in European vacations. But on the other side....This will remain to continue I guess for over the next couple of years unless a vaccin will be an option. So the countries which are dependent on tourism, maybe they should do some in the mean time. I don't know.

There is no guide book on how all of this goes and most for most countries and politicians all of this is new. You can see the struggle that there is no perfect answer at the moment. And same if for the people who would want to leave.

To me camping or so would be the only realistic option. Driving somewhere and set camp. Maybe get a little cabin. And see no one else. But the exploring, going to the restaurants, sightseeing none of that should be there. And it is. You only have to decide to not take it.

And that is what we don't do. Because we find ourselves more important. Our small picture and our Summer vacay which we deserve.
So will I go away? I don't want to say I am the holy Mary, but I also don't want to say f&... the world and I don't care. So what is in the middle?

I don't know.

You at least have that option... here in SA, we are still on hard lockdown so travel is not even an option :( !tip

Thanks for the tip madame! Yeah it is true, at least we have the option here, but on the other hand you can also debate on whether this is a good thing or not.

How is your situation in SA at the moment? Big increases on how many infected right? Do you feel safe or do you think the country will first tip over due to economic reasons before covid

Where would you like to go?

Well Asia is high on the list still but not an option getting in planes! So a lake in the mountains is the most realistic option for now I guess!
