Viking Fest and Ship in Denmark

in TravelFeed2 years ago

After my hiking trip in Sweden and my visit in Norway I now arrived in Denmark

There are some ferries connecting several different cities on the southern coast of Norway to the northern tip of Denmark. It takes a few hours to make the trip and it's probably the cheapest way to cross boarders. I arrived in Hirtshals in Denmark in a sunny day and first had a look around there which has a really nice sandy beach. Of course the temperatures are not even really warm in summer, so it takes a bit of courage to dive into the swell... But even without going for a swim, the nature here is beautiful and invites for a longer walk on the beach.

After staying for a night at the local camping grounds, I took the train to travel a bit further south and stopped somewhere for a bit of a rest. By coincidence I discovered that there was a viking fest/market nearby which seemed like an obvious place to go! Luckily it wasn't so far away (traversing distances gets a bit more difficult when traveling on foot). The festival was quite large harboring dozens of tents and hundreds of attendees. Here you can see the entrance.

You could listen to some of the traditional music with instruments of the time (I believe they tried to reconstruct the instruments from back then) which... well sounded interesting :D It's definitely nice to see people interested in their traditions and culture so they can keep it alive. You could also find some traditional foods such as sausages and meats with potatoes or kale which provided for another layer of authenticity. And then of course were the games... here we had some brave vikings lined up for "battle". Although this was more of a show rather than a real competition. It was nice to witness.

I particularly liked the nordic art display. It's very unique and feels very harmonious. Here I guess is what could be a dragon entwined in circles and symbols. And then for a highlight I also saw a "real" viking ship. Unfortunately I couldn't board it, but even from the distance it was obvious that there was a lot of details and probably realistically reconstructed.

Crossing borders and facing cultural and natural changes is one of the things I like most about these trips.
