Street Art #319 La Patrie Building (UP2020), Montreal

in StreetArt3 years ago (edited)

Always during Under Pressure, the La Patrie Building is decorated by many artists. Beautiful old buidling but which now remains abandoned (more about it at the end of the post).

Each year several artists are invited to paint a part of the building. The works on the top remained the same compared to last year, but below, we have a new series.

Portrait of Celestino Cordova (wiki), Mapuche spiritual leader. In 2014, he was sentendced for 18-year prison for the fire that resulted in the death of the Luchsinger-Mackay couple. He did a 107 days-long hunger strike in order to visite a Rehue, sacred altar used by the Mapuche. More about this story on chiletoday.cl. Always good to learn something...

La Patrie _ 1976.jpg

The buidling in 1976

The building, seven-story structure dates to 1906, housed the Montreal's newspaper La Patrie (founded in 1879 by Honoré Beaugrand). The newspaper was printed until the late 60's. Following the closure of the newspaper, UQAM (Montreal University) took possession of the building. In 2007, the building was sold to the Church of Scientology for $ 4.25 million. Scientology owes the City of Montreal $117,000 in unpaid taxes, in addition to penalties and interest. The La Patrie building is in poor condition since nobody occupies it. Sad...

With Street Art, you learn a little bit about the history of the city as well as the architecture. 😀

Very cool! it reminds me of abandoned buildings in Malaga, Spain. The photo showing the building as it looked like in 1976 gives a good idea about how grand it once was. Sad when buildings are neglected...Thanks for sharing.

Yep very sad and it's well located, downtown Montreal on the main street.
