Mexican Murals - Fantabulous Emancipation

in StreetArt3 years ago (edited)

Back in Mexico City, I really have to walk a few blocks before finding a new mural... Okay, slight irony here, but after the Rivera Maya I feel truly spoiled with huge, colorful murals, just about everywhere. That goes for the capital too, even though one really has to look a bit for them. But they are around, such as this Harley Quinn one, perfect to use it in this week's Street-art Contest by CCC. It's the 40th one already!!!

Hit It Baby, Hit It Good!

This giant mural, located on the corner of Augustín Melgar and Circuito Bicentenario in San Miguel Chapultepec, features the famous comic book character, as she's wielding her iconic baseball bat, smashing something to bits. We have no idea what this something could be, but the resulting bits all look fun and colorful, like candy and confetti. The accompanying words Dale, Dale, Dale! suggest that it may actually be a piñata.

Where There's Love, There's Life

The image is framed by the wise words regarding love and life, which interestingly don't sound like something you'd expect from Harley Quinn. But then again, many villains have a positive side, and I am really not an expert on comic books. Fact is, I haven't seen the movie either... In any case, both her and her supporting characters behind her, seem to be enjoying themselves. According to the words below, this entire piece is a movie plug for the recently released Birds of Prey movie, or Aves de Presa, as it is known in Spanish.

The mural is amazingly well painted, and it doesn't even seem to matter that the artist ran out of black paint before the background was completed. Talking about artist, the name seems to elude me again. There is a huge mention of the film studio and the comic book company that created Harley Quinn, as well as a hashtag for the movie title. So could those scraggley tags above be the artist's marks? Could it be SMA©??? Not that I found anything on them under this moniker.
