The Whiskey Blues

Yeah, That's Part Of My Collection ..

The photo was taken a while back, so it is missing a few, but you get the idea. The post is less about the photo or the brands and qualities of the whiskey, scotch or bourbons I have pilled in the cabinet, and more about the fact that I haven't touched them in almost a year.

Yeah, you read that right..

Almost A Year!!!

It will be a year this Thanksgiving..
A year since I came down with Covid and lost my taste and smell. Shortly after it came back I noticed things did not smell or taste the same as they did before I was sick. I made it to the doctor whom said I was suffering from a condition or COVID-19 complication called parosmia; a condition affecting my taste and smell in an awful way. It has caused some of my favorite foods and drinks to smell and taste like stale rotting filth.. Earthy with a touch of stale cigar or foul Chinese food. I could go on, but you get the picture I'm sure.

I have grown to live with this screwed up sense of smell and taste, but still dread it. Some things have remained unaffected, like shrimp and fish products. They still taste the same. Most meats taste like garbage, along with fruits and veggies.

There's just too much to list here, but one thing has really bothered me.

That My Whiskeys Now Taste BAD! Yes, ALL OF THEM!

IMG_1196.JPG

So they sit in the cabinet and wait for the day this Parosmia ends. The doctor said it usually lasts several weeks to up to a year. I'm almost at one year, so hoping its over with soon. The one good thing that has come from having this condition is the fact that bad smelling things all smell the same. It's even a smell that doesn't bother me too much. It's an odd smell that reminds me a bit of rotting grass or decaying pond scum. I can deal with that. So NO matter what it is.. Gas (both fuel and farts), rotten food, dead animals on the side of the road, a corpse (I'm guessing), and eggs.. All smell the same. Soap even smells bad to me. It's like I can smell the chemicals they put in everything we use, eat, and drink.

I Miss My Evening Sips Of Scotch, Whiskey and Whatever.

Nice part is that the clear alcohols have become more appealing to me.

Unfortunately (or Fortunately) I now welcome Vodka, Gin and Tequila!

Here's To Getting My Taste For Whiskey Back Someday!

I'm a bit jealous of your collection. I have been wanting a bottle of Macallan for a while now, but I just can't bring myself to spend the $70 on it. I know I won't be disappointed when I do, but I just have to work up to it. I tried Oban at a bar about a year ago. I thought it was pretty good. My friend didn't care for it. That sucks about your taste and smell. Have you tried those tablets you dissolve on your tongue? They are supposed to change the way things taste for you. I think you can get them on Amazon. My sister in law showed them to us. I think a lot of chemo patients use them because of how that impacts their sense of taste and smell. Might be something worth looking into until you are back to normal!

No need for jealousy here. That bottle is done anyhow. I like the 18 year much better than the 12 and definitely better than the 15. I would skip the 15 in my opinion. Save up for the 18!

That Oban is pretty good. They make a few different ones and I don't care for them all. I do like the Bowmore 12 year is nice. Very smoky but nice.

I'll have to look into the tabs, but the problem is deep in my nasal passage and not the actual taste buds. Not sure what the tabs do. They may have something to do with the actual taste buds. I'll look into it though.. Thanks!!

Good to know! I will probably just start with the 12 and work my way up. Skipping the 15 of course!

I would try all three at the same time, if you're out and they have it. Then you'll see the differences. I like to do that when time and money allows. Except for Pappy. I can't bring myself to drop over $200 for a glass of that neat. I hear it's not worth it.

It has been a year since you got sick with Covid and lost your taste and smell, for such exquisite Wiskys, I hope that now you feel very well, from such a bad disease and that it will never come back, never for you and hopefully for no one. It is very true, my nephew was the same, he completely lost his taste and is very recovered and he tells me that this has not happened, there are still variants, here in Venezuela today it was reported that we still have a thousand cases, in my case I have 69 years old, I always wear my mask, many do not and it is worrying. Greetings dear, that you are very well. Successes.

Yes. It has been a year and my taste and smell are still not good. Sounds like you are taking all the precautions and taking care of yourself. That's good. I hope Covid goes far away and never comes back too!

This is how it is estimated, on the 25th of this month of September I will be 70 years old and I do not want to go through such a terrible evil that covid is, that is why my mask is like putting on my shirt. I sincerely hope that you improve totally and definitively and have use of your sense of smell. I thank you from Venezuela for visiting me, I hope you will also do it in my publications on yoga, which has been an excellent and very effective medicine for my physical and mental health. I greet you with much affection.

70? Awesome. Glad you are taking all of the necessary steps to protect yourself. Say hello to Venezuela for me 😊

I'll check out your blog.

Thank you dear, your visits are very important, with what I have achieved in Hive for two years I have been able to buy my medicines and those of my wife, in addition to medical consultations, as a retired teacher with more than 42 years of service, as supervisor of schools, my monthly allowance as a retiree is not enough for it. I mean, Hive has been one of the best things that has happened in my life and that of my family. I wish you much success and a full healing.

Wow, that's really annoying and must be frustrating. I hope your taste buds recover soon so you can enjoy whisky again. That is quite a collection.

So Frustrating, but is funny what one can get used to. I used to eat a ton of chocolate but now it tastes like dirt. I still find myself eating it out of habit I suppose. I ask myself why I still eat it. Who knows. If I take really deep breaths then I can taste normal for a few seconds, so that's what I do a lot.

I feel for you. I do enjoy my food and chocolate is a favourite. I'd miss that.
