¿Nuestra esencia es el deseo...? — Needs Vs Desires /// Iniciativa #Humanitas

in Humanitas2 years ago

What is the difference between desire and need? This week we have a very interesting reflection in the #Humanitas community. It is about two concepts or elements that might seem the same but actually many differences or interpretations we could give to each one. We invite you to participate as it is a very interesting topic.

This is the link of the initiative: Initiative: Human Culture week N°16: "Needs vs Wants". In the community Humanitas.

The first thing that comes to my mind with these two concepts is that one refers to something a little more related to the physical plane, with the body and what is necessary to keep it in optimal conditions. And the other concept I relate to something that goes beyond the material. It is something rather metaphysical that would not necessarily have an origin related to the physical or palpable matter.

The need would then be something that our physical body expresses with the objective that we consciously or unconsciously satisfy that need. Desire is something we want and is based on our own personal interests, on our mind and experiences.

It could be said that all, absolutely all human beings need more or less the same, with certain very particular exceptions. That is to say, we all need water, food, shelter, etc. We also all have certain emotional or social needs that are more or less similar. But no one desires exactly the same things as another person. We all have very particular and personal desires that cannot be repeated in others.

You could say that desire is our "metaphysical DNA". Each person desires unique things, and some people may desire things that may seem unimaginable to the rest of the human beings in the world. Someone might desire something like seeing a purple dog walking on the ground on Mars, but there can also be desires of all kinds, even morally unacceptable ones. The desires are infinite.

Where does each person's desire come from? To answer this question we might have to go into a deeper study of metaphysics or something like that. And although we might desire things based on our known experience, desire does not have a "physical" origin, but is arguably more "mental" or "ethereal".

If we touch again on the subject of metaphysics, it could be said that we are desire. And there are different levels depending on the level of consciousness. For example, the desire of a rock is simply "to be there", that of a plant is to absorb energy and reproduce, that of an animal goes further, and so on, until we reach the human being who has the highest level of desire, at least consciously. I do not know if all philosophers would agree that everything has desire, but perhaps our needs are unconscious desires of the "lower levels" (mineral, vegetable and animal).

Desires in the modern world

Moving on to more everyday and practical issues, it could be said that human beings in the modern world tend to confuse or mix needs with wants. We might confuse the need to communicate, socialize and stay connected with the desire to have a state-of-the-art phone. And we may be able to satisfy that need, but at the same time, such a device may not contribute to our productivity or mental health, and for much lower costs we could satisfy the need to connect in the same way.

The desire to eat something tasty can be mixed or confused with the need to eat, perhaps leading to an unhealthy diet. And so it is with anything else. There is always something in our desire that can corrupt or corrupt us. And another issue that also comes in here is that of advertising and external influences.

Although we have a more advanced level of consciousness than animals, we are still highly influenced by our environment and do things unconsciously. The task is to become more conscious in order to better control or focus our desires, since, according to what I have written so far, that is what we are.

In some cultures or religions desire is seen as something negative, although perhaps they refer more to selfish desire, which is the desire to satisfy the ego or a need of the body in a disproportionate or unconscious way. There are certain things we need to live, but desiring those things would not necessarily be positive.

Going spiritual, it could be said that we are a soul that "desires" in a body that "needs". If we assume that the soul only desires good things, perhaps it would be ideal to be able to align these two things. When we mix desire with a need of the body is perhaps when we "go wrong". From here more and more interpretations can arise, even biblical ones. You can leave your commentary about your perspective on the subject.

In summary, I believe that needs are a way or attempt to preserve life, while desire is what defines us as humans.

I hope you enjoyed this reading. Leave your comment or opinion.

Hola @acont,

Excelente escrito estimado @acont.
