Greetings friends, I am very happy, as well as the moderating team of this Humanitas community, because the contest around the theme of death that we have raised has had a great receptivity, it has challenged us to think about what could be an epitaph for the moment of our death, that moment where even when we leave our pilgrimage on this earth, we still leave something on it, that is the values that moved us, the principles that gave consistency, the lifestyle we assumed but above all the meaning that we gave to our existence.

For this reason, when thinking of an epitaph for the day I will no longer be in this world, I considered that the most propitious would be some characteristic of my life that distinguished me in a special way, and this is undoubtedly the service, which reflecting on my life I can locate in several ways:

  • In my formation. From here I was already driven to service, from that phrase that says "He who does not live to serve, does not serve to live" or as I like to think of it "If you do not live to serve, why do you serve?" But beyond this reality, the role of service I want to highlight here is that even when I have been training and still today when I pick up a book or take a course I do it with this perspective, in what sense this that I am learning is useful to others?

One of the things that we complain about some areas of society are their lousy services, but if we stop to think more carefully we will realize that if there has not been a good training it is inevitable that we do not have the desired or at least sufficient and necessary quality. That is why, preparing to give the best of ourselves whatever the mission we have in life is already putting ourselves at the service.

  • In what I do. It is here where, in a special way, the call I feel to service is inescapable and I carry it out with all the joy in the world. First of all, as a Catholic priest, a vocation of evident service to those people who either feel distant from the love of God or are on a path of spiritual growth in this regard.

You may think, well rightly his epitaph was about service, but I see and feel everything this way, hence I think it would be a great legacy for others. For example, I have been a professor of philosophy and theology for 10 years, and I do it as a service to others (yesterday I happened to be invited to a philosophical congress), I have provided spiritual accompaniment service to institutions (I have been a military chaplain and now a university chaplain), and last but not least, I love learning and teaching about the blockchain because it has a great potential that feels spectacular not only already in a future but is carving out countless wonderful presents.

  • On my projects. Although tomorrow is uncertain if you were to ask me about my future plans many of them will be signed with the service mark. For example, consolidate social aid projects in the parish community where I am currently, continue to effectively prepare young people in the field of humanities and get to realize web projects based on blockchain with social impact, because just as several projects have helped me, it would be a great dream come true that in this sense I can also give my contribution to society.

I would like to end my participation in the theme proposed for the contest by pointing out that although summarizing the life of a person in a sentence, in this case in the form of an epitaph, may seem limiting, since we are more than a simple sentence, it is an interesting exercise because it can help us to determine the center on which our existence gravitates or we want it to gravitate.

For this reason, and the fact that we are beings in constant change and evolution, it is not at all unreasonable that later we change completely or in part our personal proposal of epitaph (we make some nuances, perhaps), since it is always valid to change but above all every day we can know ourselves more and better.
