Life changes, and when it’s for the better and involves doing things we enjoy, it’s even better. I’m now enjoying those changes, and not only that, but I’m learning from them.

Aprendo de la ciudad, de sus calles, de sus construcciones y su historia, la mayoría de las veces muy antigua. Que había en esos lugares en épocas antiguas, si una muralla, ruinas romanas, si se ha hecho algún descubrimiento por la obra actual del metro, donde muchas veces excavando encuentran rocas que fueron ruinas. Todo ello me resulta muy interesante. Siempre he ha gustado la historia.
Normalmente cuando salgo de paseo, ya como un estilo de vida, recorro esas calles antiguas y miro las edificaciones, donde sobre todo me encanta ver los ventanales, puertas de madera labrada, los hermosos balcones y las terrazas acristaladas. Los estilos arquitectónicos de cada lugar y barrio van variando y todos cuentan una historia.
I learn from the city, from its streets, its buildings and its history, which is often very ancient. I wonder what used to be in those places in times gone by, perhaps a city wall, Roman ruins, and whether any discoveries have been made during the current underground works, where excavations often uncover rocks that were once ruins. I find all of this fascinating. I’ve always loved history.
Usually, when I go for a walk, it’s become a way of life, I wander through those old streets and look at the buildings, where I particularly love seeing the large windows, carved wooden doors, beautiful balconies and glass-enclosed terraces. The architectural styles of each place and neighbourhood vary, and they all tell a story.

Mucha gente, o más bien la gente que ha nacido aquí toma todo esto como algo natural, pero para mí siempre es sorprendente, siempre veo algo nuevo, me gusta mirar los detalles. Por ejemplo, el otro día caminaba por una calle por la que suelo ir, pero no había mirando en una determinada dirección y allí había un hermoso mural. En otras ocasiones veo como se renueva permanentemente la ciudad apareciendo obras de arte en forma de murales, aquí y allá. La arquitectura en si misma es una obra de arte.
Y para ir a los museos camino por muchas de ellas, como abstraída de la gente, que es mucha, porque hay turistas todo el año y mucha, pero mucha gente. Pero camino mirando mi alrededor, el entorno, una torre que no vi antes, una farola, lo que sea. Se ha convertido para mí en una forma de disfrutar las caminatas, sea que solamente sea eso o que vaya a ver una muestra de arte.
A veces pienso en la cantidad de museos que me falta visitar, a los que no he ido nunca antes y es increíble. La calle Carretería se caracteriza por esa arquitectura y luego cuando llego a la Alameda todo se vuelve mágico. Sta última calle tiene conexión con la famosa calle Larios y desde allí, estando en el centro histórico muchos museos y galerías están relativamente cerca. Aunque debo decir que los museos se distribuyen por toda la ciudad.
Many people, or rather, those who were born here, take all this for granted, but for me it’s always a surprise; I always spot something new, and I love looking at the details. For example, the other day I was walking down a street I often take, but I hadn’t been looking in a particular direction, and there was a beautiful mural there. On other occasions, I see how the city is constantly being revitalised, with works of art in the form of murals appearing here and there. The architecture itself is a work of art.
And to get to the museums, I walk through many of them, as if detached from the crowds, which are huge, because there are tourists all year round and so many, so many people. But I walk looking around me, at my surroundings: a tower I hadn’t seen before, a lamppost, whatever. It has become a way for me to enjoy my walks, whether that’s all I’m doing or whether I’m going to see an art exhibition.
Sometimes I think about the number of museums I still have to visit, the ones I’ve never been to before, and it’s incredible. Carretería Street is characterised by that architecture, and then when I reach the Alameda, everything becomes magical. The latter street connects to the famous Larios Street, and from there, being in the historic centre, many museums and galleries are relatively close by. Although I must say that the museums are spread throughout the city.

A veces, como estas dos muestras que les traigo hoy, son algo particulares, porque no hay cuadros pintados al óleo, sino más bien historias, algunas intensas y también trayectorias de vida como artista.
En la galería El Ateneo, me encontré en una ocasión, con una exposición fotográfica peculiar llamada “Buscadoras, territorios en guerra” de la fotógrafa Panamá Díaz.
Aquí pude encontrar muchísimos retratos de mujeres, mujeres como yo y tantas otras pero que han pasado y pasan por una situación especial. Se trata de mujeres colombianas que buscan a sus seres queridos desaparecidos, que han sido víctimas en distintos conflictos armados que están presentes en ese país ya hace mucho tiempo.
Sometimes, like these two exhibitions I’m bringing you today, they’re a bit unusual, because there are no oil paintings, but rather stories, some intense, and also the life journeys of artists.
At the El Ateneo gallery, I once came across a unique photography exhibition called “Buscadoras, territorios en guerra” by the photographer Panamá Díaz.
Here I found many portraits of women, women like me and so many others, who have been and are going through a difficult situation. These are Colombian women searching for their missing loved ones, who have been victims of the various armed conflicts that have plagued the country for so long.

La artista presenta a estas mujeres como una forma de resistencia y teniendo como algo preponderante la memoria y la defensa de la vida. Por eso creo que más allá del arte, aquí se tocan las emociones, una experiencia diferente de empatía y comprensión por lo que pasan día a día esas mujeres, desesperadas por no saber que ha sido de sus familiares.
Por lo tanto, es algo que al mirar sus rostros llama a la reflexión. Ninguna guerra ni conflicto es bueno, no importa donde sea, siempre los perjudicados son los civiles, la gente como vos y como yo. No vale la pena. Lo que si vale la pena es la vida y no importa la distinción de país, religión, cultura… todos somos humanos, pero parece que muchos no lo entienden así.
Estas mujeres exponen sus rostros en una historia de amor y constancia en la búsqueda. En el cartel que estaba en la pared figuraba el nombre de cada una de ellas. Esta ha sido una muestra muy emotiva.
The artist presents these women as a form of resistance, with memory and the defence of life at the forefront. That is why I believe that, beyond the art itself, this work touches our emotions, offering a unique experience of empathy and understanding for what these women go through day in, day out, driven to despair by not knowing what has become of their loved ones.
Therefore, looking at their faces invites reflection. No war or conflict is good; no matter where it is, it is always civilians who suffer, people like you and me. It is not worth it. What is worth it is life, and it does not matter what country, religion or culture we come from… we are all human, but it seems that many do not see it that way.
These women reveal their faces in a story of love and perseverance in their search. The poster on the wall bore the name of each one of them. This has been a very moving exhibition.

Saliendo de allí cruzando la plaza constitución y a unas pocas calles se encuentra el museo Picasso. En este último tiempo he ido varias veces, porque es muy grande y había varias muestras de arte, la mayoría de ellas muy grandes y con mucho por ver.
Pero hubo una en particular donde no se mostraba arte sino un reconocimiento u homenaje a Elena Asins, creadora singular del arte español contemporáneo. Al entrar en la sala, una gran sala, por cierto, pude ver unas letras enormes que de lejos parecían asientos y cada una de esas letras formaba su nombre. La iluminación era sutil y agradable.
Elena obtuvo la medalla de oro al mérito en las Bellas Artes y el premio nacional de artes plásticas. Ella construye un lenguaje hecho con conocimiento, precisión y renuncia. Desarrollo, gracias a su intensa curiosidad, investigaciones que abarcaban las matemáticas, dibujo, poesía, programación e imagen.
Leaving there and crossing Plaza de la Constitución, just a few streets away, you’ll find the Picasso Museum. I’ve been there several times recently, as it’s very large and there were various art exhibitions, most of them extensive and with plenty to see.
But there was one in particular that wasn’t an art exhibition but rather a tribute to Elena Asins, a unique figure in contemporary Spanish art. Upon entering the room, a large room, by the way, I could see some enormous letters that from a distance looked like seats, and each of those letters spelled out her name. The lighting was subtle and pleasant.
Elena was awarded the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts and the National Prize for Visual Arts. She constructs a language built on knowledge, precision and self-sacrifice. Thanks to her intense curiosity, she undertook research spanning mathematics, drawing, poetry, programming and imagery.

Este homenaje se produce con motivo del décimo aniversario de su fallecimiento, presentando la última obra de la artista: Antígona, donde se convierte a las palabras en estructuras, una escultura formada a partir de caracteres griegos y donde la forma y el significado se funden en uno solo.
En una sala más adelante había dos grandes pantallas donde se exponía la vida de la artista y en el fondo se puede ver una línea histórica con lujo de detalles. Fue interesante aprender sobre esta artista.
Y este homenaje y exposición se realizó gracias al apoyo del Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía. Es este museo que custodia toda la obra artística de Elena Asins.
En otra época me hubiera sido imposible ni siquiera pensar en todo lo que podía aprender, ver y admirar en este momento de mi vida y que esto iba a ser habitual en mi día a día. Y la verdad estoy muy agradecida por ello.

This tribute marks the tenth anniversary of her death and showcases the artist’s final work: Antigone, in which she transforms words into structures, a sculpture formed from Greek characters where form and meaning merge into one.
In a room further on, there were two large screens displaying the artist’s life, and in the background, a detailed historical timeline could be seen. It was fascinating to learn about this artist.
This tribute and exhibition were made possible thanks to the support of the Reina Sofía National Art Museum. It is this museum that houses the entire body of Elena Asins’s work.
In another time, it would have been impossible for me to even imagine all that I could learn, see and admire at this stage of my life, and that this would become a regular part of my daily routine. And I am truly very grateful for it.

The tribute to Elena Asins is intriguing, though I can’t tell you much more about it than that. Thank you so much for sharing your perspective and for taking us along on this stroll.
