Curator Cat on Caturday: Loafing About the House and Considering the Challenge of Community Building!

in Caturdaylast year

Greetings Fabulous Felines and Hoomans of Hivelandia and surrounding communities!

Hard to believe how time flies, but we are already at the final Caturday of January... before you know it, it will be spring up here in the north!

The Hoomans have been very busy with their housecleaning and reorganizing. There are boxes and bags everywhere!

Evidently, "the objective" is that the Mom-Hooman is consolidating her online 2nd hand clothing business into a single space, rather than having it scattered around the house in multiple locations.

I'm really OK with that, as I don't enjoy being yelled at because she doesn't want cat hair on certain items that are to be sold. How would I know that? OK, so she doesn't actually yell at me, but I get locked out of certain rooms in the house now and then... and we all know how much cats hate a closed door!

Community Building Thoughts

One of my ambitions for this year is to continue building the Hive Cats Community.

Community building is a considerable challenge, and maintaining a community is also a lot of work. I think that's one of the things people overlook, with communities. It's not enough to just build it and then hope people show up to become part of it forever.

"Hive Cats" has a fairly solid set of roots in the sense that there's a strong "connecting point:" A shared interest in — and love of — cats. Having a clearly defined purpose is a super important first step!

Cats love to sleep in a circle!

But what's interesting, once you join something?

Having been part of the community building process online for many years, it's no secret that many people join associations, clubs and communities and never become active. Hence, there must be some sort of incentives, aside from just the root commonality that brought members together.

Certainly, financial incentives are nice, but they are typically pretty short lived.

Contests and Other Gamification

I got off to a pretty quick start — as an individual — back on our "old" venue, and a good bit of that was thanks to users who regularly held contests and challenges that helped new users get more visibility and recognition.

Much of the time, those challenges didn't actually offer liquid prizes, but things like month-long delegations, or shares of HSBI that would benefit them in the long run.

I have always liked HSBI (Hive Stake Based Income) because you receive a prize, but it's a prize that benefits you primarily as a result of ongoing long-term participation.

No Caturday post would be complete without a little Smudge!

We're also considering getting badges for the active members of the Hive Cats community; just in the early phases of the process, for the moment. Badges seem to be a feature used quite a bit on @peakd, which is also our favorite front end.

Another idea would be to have a monthly "Engagement Challenge," encouraging our members to not only post cat-related content, but to actively engage and comment on other cat related posts... perhaps within a specific pre-set list of tags.

There are plenty of options... and this is mostly in the brainstorming stage, at this time!

Well, this has become a rather longer post than I had intended, so I guess I will stop here.

Thanks for coming to visit, and do leave a comment if you wish, or if you have some good ideas for community building! Hope your Caturday has been a nice one!

=^..^=

Love Cats? Get Involved in Hive's Cat Communties!

If you're a cat lover and often/sometimes post pictures or other content that includes your feline friends, why not become an active part of Hive's growing Cat Communities?

These are some of the more active Cat Communities — why not join them ALL? Remember, you can also "cross-post" your cat posts to them!

HiveCats by @curatorcat is a central "gathering place" for cat content on Hive; promoting the use of the #hivecats tag for feline content!

Cat Snaps by @manorvillemike is a place to post pictures of your cats when you don't have a whole lot to say beyond just sharing your cute photos!

Caturday Community by @saboin is a community where we get to celebrate posts relating to Saturday — aka "Caturday" — our own special day!

Cat Photos by @andrarchy is a "mixed use" cat content community; posts can be just photos or longer, as long as the subject is CATS! It has a lot of subscribers but is not very active.

Cats by @captainklaus (and Sissi!) is another "general" cat content community; it's there, but not very active.

Last, but certainly not least, a special shoutout to the Hive Pets Community which has become quite active and typically has quite a bit of cat content!

There are a number of other feline communities listed on Hive, but I am not sharing them for now as they have not had any activity (by their Admins OR users) since the Steem/Hive fork. Updates as they become available!
