[ENG] Remembering the first great achievement in Venezuelan basketball

"We are in heaven, we are in glory! Those were the words that the sports narrator Pepe Delgado Rivero, pronounced through the television screens to an entire country that had been paralyzed expectantly before the outcome of one of the most important sporting events in the history of Venezuelan sports. Those of us who have been sports fans from a very early age, keep in our memory the pleasant memory of our first close encounter with sports; the one that made us know that we would be great fans of some discipline. Likewise, we always remember the sporting moment that caused us the most emotion; that explosion of adrenaline you feel when you see your favorite team lift a champion trophy, or when you catch a ball in the stands, or receive an autograph from the athlete you admire.

In my case, as a child I had to live both situations in one. My first encounter with sports was the maximum explosion of adrenaline that I remember having as a spectator of a sporting event, all in front of a small television screen and surrounded by the great family hope that linked the triumph of the national team. When I was thinking about what article I could begin my participation in the present "Full Deportes" community, I could not think of anything else but to capture this moment, which I hope will serve as a memory for those who had the joy of living it, and as an enrichment of sports history for more recent generations.

It was a sunny and hot day on Sunday, May 26, 1991. During those years, although baseball was the king sport in Venezuela, as it still is today, basketball had an important place in the fans' predilection, especially in view of the absolute lack of competitiveness of the Venezuelan national soccer team at that time. The Brazilian and Venezuelan teams were competing for the final of the 34th edition of the South American Basketball Championship. Both teams had a record of six wins and one loss. Venezuela was missing the American player, Sam "the magician" Shepherd, who had become a Venezuelan national, due to injury.

The Venezuelan team started with Cocodrilos de Caracas player Armando Backer as point guard; Iván Olivares of Trotamundos de Carabobo as small forward and eventually assuming a shooting guard role, Gabriel Estaba of Marinos de Oriente as small forward, Carl Herrera of Bravos de Portuguesa, who would later become an NBA player of the Houston Rockets, as strong forward assisting on the boards the Marinos player and center of the starting five, Cesar Portillo; under the technical direction of the Puerto Rican Julio Toro. Brazil started with players Maury De Sousa, Paulo Villas, Rolando Ferreira, Marcel de Souza and Josuel Dos Santos; led by technical director Jose Medalha.

The setting was an imposing Forum in Valencia, home of the legendary Venezuelan team Trotamundos de Carabobo, which holds three international titles in the South American club category. Being at that time one of the best venues in Latin America to play basketball, the Forum had been inaugurated just a few weeks before; and what better scenario than a tournament of such magnitude.

The atmosphere could not have been better, the gym was packed; the fans were into the game from the opening second and the expectations were very high, given Venezuela's victory over Brazil by 7 points in the previous round. However, throughout the first half, the inaccuracies in Backer's leadership, the absence of Portillo under the boards, the impressive average of three-point shots of the Brazilian team and the failures in the Venezuelan defense, led them to lose the first half by 13 points of difference.

As the second half went on, things got worse for the national team in the third quarter of the game. With 10 minutes left to the end of the game, the difference in favor of Brazil increases to 19 points with a score of 70-89. The crowd, so enthusiastic since the first minute of the game, began to lose heart and the hopes of many began to fade away. Venezuela was facing the Latin American basketball colossus of the time, which at the same time held the titles of current FIBA, South American and Pan American champions, so if it lost, the Venezuelan team would fall with its boots on. As the specialists had already said, it was very unlikely that a team as powerful as the Brazilian team would lose twice against the same opponent.

And that's how, with 6 minutes to go before the buzzer, what in my opinion, marks a before and after of the game takes place. With the score down by 15 points, after a failure in a triple shot by the Brazilian Luis Felipe, the forward Gabriel Estaba takes the rebound under the hoop, and as a spurt dribbling at high speed crosses the entire court to score a double basket in the opponent's hoop; putting 13 points on the board and thus giving a boost that charged with energy to the public and the rest of the players.

With 5 minutes and fraction of a minute left, the difference was reduced to 10 points. Minutes before, the public present had been chanting a name: "Walcott, Walcott", referring to the American-Venezuelan player Omar Walcott Roberts who was making his debut with the Venezuelan jersey in this tournament and of whom they were asking for his entrance to the court, which finally takes place in substitution of Cesar Portillo, who was giving many advantages under the hoop. The table is served to witness, in theory, the last 5 minutes of the game that would become one of the most exciting stretches of time in Venezuelan sport.

The difference widens to 14 points, but immediately the national team resets its game; the entry of Walcott quickly pays off with a great block, and with a better control of the boards, allows Carl Herrera to go to his natural position of Wing-Pivot, being able to develop the fast game of the strategist Julio Toro; and together with the situation of several Brazilian players who had fouls and had to slow down the pace of the defense; Venezuela begins to impose its superiority of man-to-man play on the court.

Gabriel Estaba along with forward Ivan Olivares, continue with their great aim converting triple baskets and free throws that continued to bring the tricolor closer, and with 3 minutes left, for the first time in the entire second half, the difference is reduced to single digits with 9 points, to later be placed to 5 with 2 minutes and fraction. At this point, the Forum of Valencia is already a hive of screams and enthusiasm, exerting incredible pressure on the Brazilian team that for the first time is prey to nerves and loses control of the situation.

With a minute and a half to play and Pepe Delgado shouting "We're up by 2, we're up by 2" in the game's narration, the pressure continued all over the court against Brazil, who had seen their big lead vanish in the blink of an eye. Less than a minute left, 107-108 on the scoreboard; so that in a single play, Carl Herrera, after a missed free throw by Walcott, took the rebound and what was unthinkable minutes before happens, Venezuela takes the lead and snatches the ball from Brazil with only 15 seconds left on the clock, on the way to what seemed an unexpected victory, especially when Carl extended the difference to 4 points.

And it is at this moment, as if it were a Hollywood movie script, the unthinkable happens again, this time for Venezuela. What was supposed to be the last offensive of the game, Gabriel Estaba in just minutes turns from hero to villain, by giving an unnecessary foul on a 3-point shot, and then causing a technical foul; leading Brazil to charge 5 consecutive free throws plus possession of the ball; which would be enough to tie and win the game in the final 9 seconds.

Players, technical director, public, narrators and commentators were undaunted by such a bath of cold water. So much swimming to die on the shore, and succumbing to the disproportionate reaction of the referee. However, in the face of the deafening noise and the pressure of the public, Brazil was able to miss one of the five free throws, as well as wasting the last offensive shot of the overtime, so that the game was tied after 40 minutes of regulation time 112-112, which meant that an extra time had to be played.

During the second half, the battle was very even in an exchange of baskets and inaccuracies on both sides due to the physical exhaustion of the long day. Players from both teams began to leave the game due to the foul limit, Venezuela lost its two main forwards, Estaba and Olivares. With only 80 seconds left, Brazil dominated the scoreboard and the ball by one point; but an offensive mistake and a quick attack ended in a three-pointer by the player coming from the bench, Luis Jimenez that put Venezuela ahead 120-118.

When the game was dying, Brazil succumbs under the pressure and can not score the tie, so that Venezuela with 34 seconds to take possession of the ball; And after a missed mid-range shot by Kako Solorzano, the name of Luis Jimenez appears again, who living up to his nickname of "the silent one" appears like an exhalation to take the rebound and finish off a double basket to sentence the Brazilian team and the game that finally after the buzzer sounded, was in favor of the national team 122-121.
