A few days ago one of the stars of Spanish soccer, Gerard Piqué announced his retirement from professional soccer. Last Saturday this became effective. Something that was already seen coming but that surprised us because independently he himself decided to advance the times, he had a contract with FC Barcelona until 2024 but preferred not to continue.

At the same time, another sports news that is circulating is precisely about another great star, Cristiano Ronaldo, who is not performing as well as before, the most logical thing they say would be to retire, but at least for now this does not seem to be in his plans. We are faced with two different visions of the end of a career, but not of any type of player, but of those who have made history. Therefore, I thought it would be interesting to reflect and share my opinion on the matter.

Before this one of the things I find interesting to note is that both soccer stars were at Manchester United and were even teammates and good friends there. Then they were on-field rivals in the Spanish league, one was a relentless striker and the other an exceptional defender.

It is also noteworthy that the opinion regarding the end of the career of both stars, does not tarnish all the great journey they have had on their way, their performance and, above all, the great moments of good play they offered us.

Something that is most evident at the end of a sporting career as demanding as soccer is that the performance is not the same. This was the case of Piqué, who was no longer a starting defender for the blaugrana team, when he had been one of their best center backs. The same is happening with Cristiano at Manchester, who even seems to play better when he is not there, which seems to tell us that his glory days also seem to have come to an end.

Pique has realized this, and before this became more noticeable, he decided to quit his professional career at a time that with how complicated it was getting, he didn't reach such a deep level. I do not know if in the end we can say the same about Cristiano, since in addition to not having managed to sign for a Champions League team, in the Europa League he is not leaving a good image, not only because of the few minutes that are being given on the field but also because of some attitudes that he has taken in this situation.

For someone who has won so many titles, and who is an example to follow in work, dedication and effort, I do not feel it is necessary. In this sense, Piqué's decision seemed more intelligent to me, especially because sometimes the image that remains the most is the one that is transmitted in the last years of a career. Although with Cristiano or Mr. Champions I do not think so, however I think it is more astute to avoid and not tempt fate.

Pique is retiring with the team of his dreams, and even seems to have plans to be part of its board, as president of the club. I'm not saying that with Cristiano it's the same story, far from it, but if he could think of a retirement plan where he could still be linked to his passion (playing and being the best) it wouldn't be so hard for him, maybe in a team in a less demanding league for example.

With how complicated Pique's life has been on a more personal level, the best thing he could have done was to relieve himself of responsibilities in order to have a better focus on his things. Cristiano also has his personal life, a child in adolescent stage, maybe giving himself a break, as well as after the 2014 World Cup, can give him a new impetus in whatever he proposes, since he has amply demonstrated his professionalism.

In short, we have before us two spectacular soccer stories but curiously two different ways of facing the decline of a stage of life, one has decided to close the circle in the best possible way, the other is still clinging to it, which may not end well, hopefully not so and he can also find an end of equally glorious way as it has been his journey through it.
