La semana ideal ha terminado para Dominic Stricker // ATP Next Gen Finals. [Esp - Eng]

in Full Deporteslast year

During the few free moments this week, I was watching some great matches in the men's tournament of the moment. This is the 5th edition of the ATP Next Gen Finals; a competition that serves as a showcase for those young players under the age of 22 who meet the required score to qualify; of course, it is an end of the year event for the best representation of the new generation of professional tennis players. The venue is the Allianz Cloud Arena in Milan, Italy.

This year, with the non-participation of Holger Rune, the draw looked optimal for the Italian Lorenzo Musetti, accompanied by the British Jack Draper and the American Brandon Nakashima, all of them ranked in the top 50 of the official ATP ranking. However, the young Swiss Dominic Stricker broke through in a big way, to obtain some good results, accompanied by excellent performances. The 20-year-old Swiss showed great focus in both short and long exchanges against all his opponents.

However, it is important to emphasize that the matches in this competition are best of 5 sets but each set is 4 games. This format ensures that the cycles are shorter and the emotions are more followed, since the athletes have less space to impose their game. In my personal opinion, this certainly makes the matches more enjoyable, because the competitors start with everything and without further analysis of the opponent. This is what the 20-year-old Swiss boy did against his British counterpart Jack Draper in his debut.

The key of this competition, divides the 8 new talents in two groups (green and red), in which like the Nitto Finals (the older players) the best two of each group advance to the semifinals. This is how the Swiss was able to sneak in, after eliminating the favorite Lorenzo Musetti, in a very close match to 5 sets and each set defined in the tie break. After that result, Stricker, a left-handed player, showed that it was not a matter of beginner's luck, but a combination of his potential, such as his serve and his good drive.

However, after winning his 3 high level matches, he stumbled today against the Czech Jirí Lehecka by 1-3; something that surprised me a lot because Jirí had already lost a match in the group stage, precisely against the American Nakashima, with whom he will face in tomorrow's final. My impressions of this match were positive, I liked Dominic's style, always attacking on the first and third shots, making few exchanges but making some mistakes with long shots, this made him lose 3-1 in 15 minutes and maybe he didn't take care of his opening set, then that took its toll on him.

Stricker managed to hit good shots, raising the mood and brightening up the match, but the Czech would be more consistent and in 43 minutes he took the second set in the tie break 4-3 (4); And if in the 3rd round there was an awakening for the Swiss, with his spectacular parallel forehand, Jiri also adjusted his defense. Dominic showed again his strength in his hand and his acceleration from difficult angles, so he could win the set 4-2 in 20 minutes; but it would be only makeup for the match, because Lehecka broke him again in the 2nd game and at only 4 rounds that is deadly.

Jiri proved to have the patience and mettle to overcome Dominic's attacks, it was not about power but about securing the key points in each set. I must confess that I liked the Swiss more, I liked his surprise forehand to the lines; but in every match you must build the key points and solve the problems imposed by the opponent. Jiri blocked better at the net and knew how to wait for the right moment to attack; since Dominic went out of the court when hitting and you can not rely on a single blow.
It was a matter of better strategy and approach.

Tomorrow afternoon, it will be the fifth great youth final in Milan; the American comes undefeated and seems to be prepared for this instance; he even defeated Jirí in the group stage by 3-0. Although in sport there is nothing written and the Czech comes with good sensations in his game. If he continues to play with the same confidence he did today, he will surely give a good fight; although Brandon has more experience in the senior circuit and has a higher ranking (49 vs 74). I would like to see a surprise because that enlivens the stands, who like to see close matches. Lehecka has it complicated, but nothing is impossible.
