En la tercera jornada por los octavos de final del Mundial de Fútbol en Qatar; las selecciones ganadoras experimentaron diferentes maneras para pasar a la otra siguiente fase en dónde una tuvo que llegar hasta las instancias de los penaltis y la otra en tan solo los primeros 45 minutos decidió todo el encuentro.

El encuentro entre Croacia y Japón estaba destinado a ser uno muy igualado; esto lo digo por cómo fue la actuación de ambos en los grupos en dónde comenzaron este torneo; Croacia sumo 5 puntos obtenidos por 2 empates sin goles y victoria con goleada contra la selección de Canadá; por parte de Japón sumo 6 puntos después de ganarle a grandes favoritas como España y Alemania lo cual la convirtieron en líderes de grupo; ahora con esto seguramente de que el seleccionado asiático sería considerado por algunos como los favoritos, pero eso sería subestimar a una selección con la experiencia reciente de saber competir y aguantar en esta segunda fase del mundial. Creo que el factor determinante de este juego fue aprovechar las oportunidades y eso fue lo que sucedió con las dos selecciones que con un gol por bando disputaron los 120 minutos reglamentarios que los llevaron a decidir un ganador por la vía de los penaltis y en este punto acostaré nuevamente la experiencia de la selección croata que hace cuatro años jugó tres extra tiempo para poder disputar la gran final; estoy convencido de que el cuerpo técnico liderado por Zlatko Dalić, preparo a sus jugadores para nuevamente ser competitivos hasta el final, mostrando sus fuerzas y su condición de ser subcampeones del mundo. No quiero dejar de nombrar el gran trabajo de Gvardiol en la defensa, el cual para mí no solamente es una de las jóvenes estrellas del mundial, sino uno de los mejores jugadores del torneo; también la actuación del portero Livaković que no solo detuvo tres tiros penales, sino que tanto en los 90 minutos y los 30 extras, hizo lo necesario para seguir dando oportunidad a su selección.

El comienzo de la segunda fase, observamos cómo las selecciones de Asia se despiden del mundial; creo que sí hago un podio con respecto a la participación de las que consiguieron estar en octavos de final, puede decir que de primera estaría Japón que mostró y dio todo lo que pudo dar; de segunda nombró a Australia que compitió muy bien contra Argentina y de tercero Corea del Sur que fue en mi opinión la más ingenua aunque si las otras dos juegan contra Brasil, seguramente el resultado hubiera sido igual. Con respecto a los dos clasificados que se enfrentarán en la tercera jornada por los cuartos de final; creo que sin duda alguna Brasil es favorito; la selección de Croacia se vio muy desgastada al final del juego contra Japón y a pesar de como dije en anterioridad sobre la experiencia de esta selección en tiempos extras, creo que los croatas no enfrentaron a ninguna selección con esta calidad como la tiene Brasil; con esta contundencia, inteligencia, sacrificio y es que en el mundial pasado cuando se enfrentaron a alguien superior fue justamente en la final contra Francia y todos sabemos el resultado final, pero eso no evita de que ese próximo juego sea emocionante porque ambas selecciones tienen buenos jugadores que en mi opinión mostraran lo mejor de sí para estar en ese grupo predilecto de los cuatro finalistas.
