La pelota, aunque redonda, tiene más aristas de las que uno podría imaginar. Tras haber salido duramente sacudidos por Inglaterra (6-2) en su primer partido de la Copa, el entrenador Carlos Queiroz buscó restarle acritud al asunto y enfocar la atención en lo que venía por delante; no solo lo hizo ante los medios, lo hizo también al interior de un grupo de jugadores que habían sido atropellados futbolísticamente.
Queiroz recuperó a los suyos en cuestión de días, y eso se notó en cómo saltaron al terreno de juego a encarar el partido contra una Gales que llevaba, para muchos, la ficha del favorito en el choque. Queiroz firmó una especie de “Tratado de Paz” con todo su plantel y terminó por hacer de la partida a Sardar Azmoun, cuyas críticas contra el régimen le pusieron en el ojo del huracán, como titular; quizá no sea tan desquiciado entonces, decir que el balón tiene muchas aristas.
The ball, though round, has more edges than one might imagine. After being badly thrashed 6-2 by England in their opening Cup match, coach Carlos Queiroz sought to take the sting out of the affair and focus on what lay ahead; he did so not only in front of the media, but also within a group of players who had been run over footballingly.
Queiroz had his players back in a matter of days, and it showed in the way they took to the field to face a Wales side that carried, for many, the tag of favourites in the match. Queiroz signed a "peace treaty" of sorts with his entire squad and ended up starting Sardar Azmoun, whose criticism of the regime put him in the eye of the storm, and perhaps it is not so unhinged, then, to say that the ball has many edges.
Irán fue mejor desde el arranque, la revolución la encabezaban Taremi y Azmoun; con el rebelde persa del Bayer Leverkusen proponiendo anarquía (no solo en su discurso político-social) sobre el terreno de juego. Azmoun combinaba con sus compañeros y los contagiaba de esa valentía ofensiva que en muchas ocasiones no suele verse en los planteamientos de Queiroz. Gales está muy lejos de ser aquella selección que nos enamoró en la Euro de 2016, ese equipo en que iban todos a una en busca del resultado.
Tras la estrepitosa y dolorosa goleada contra Inglaterra, muchos les daban por muertos, pero hay rebeldía suficiente en este conjunto persa. Intentó, intentó y siguió intentando la rebelión iraní; pero no dejaba de estrellarse contra los palos o ante alguna intervención del abrumado Hennessey que más adelante se iría expulsado por una imprudente salida y Danny Ward hubo de sustituirle, para ver como Irán le hacía un par de golazos en tiempo añadido y así obtener un tardío premio, una victoria sobre la hora para un equipo que supo trabajarla con desparpajo desde el minuto uno. Azmoun no pudo marcar un gol que coronase su revolución pero salió del campo ovacionado por su gente y ese es un premio mayúsculo dadas las circunstancias.
El fútbol puede gustarnos más o menos, pero su componente social es inevitable y, en esta Copa del Mundo, está sirviendo como un tremendo escaparate ideológico y político. Irán conquistó una histórica victoria en el terreno de juego, han marcado 4 goles en dos partidos, el doble de tantos de los conseguidos en cualquiera de las anteriores ediciones en que participó, además del potente mensaje social de fortaleza y esperanza para aquellos que están luchando por la libertad en su país. ¡Que viva la pelota y que siga rodando!
Iran were better from the start, the revolution was led by Taremi and Azmoun; with the Persian rebel from Bayer Leverkusen proposing anarchy (not only in his social-political discourse) on the pitch. Azmoun combined with his team-mates and infused them with that attacking bravery that is often missing from Queiroz's approach. Wales are a long way from being the team we fell in love with at Euro 2016, the team that went all out in search of a result.
After the crushing and painful drubbing against England, many thought they were dead, but there is enough rebelliousness in this Persian side. They tried, tried, tried and kept trying, but kept crashing against the posts or the occasional challenge from the overwhelmed Hennessey, who was later sent off for a reckless tackle and Danny Ward had to replace him, only to see Iran score a brace in stoppage time to earn a late winner, a victory on the hour for a team that had been working with panache from minute one. Azmoun was unable to score a goal to crown his revolution but he left the field to a standing ovation from his fans and that is a major prize in the circumstances.
We may like football more or less, but its social component is unavoidable and, in this World Cup, it is serving as a tremendous ideological and political showcase. Iran won a historic victory on the pitch, they have scored 4 goals in two games, twice as many as in any of the previous editions in which they participated, in addition to the powerful social message of strength and hope for those who are fighting for freedom in their country. Long live the ball and may it keep on rolling!

Con respecto al encabezado de esta parte de nuestro análisis, hemos de referir que la felicidad en el fútbol suele provenir de las victorias que se cosechan sobre el terreno de juego y Qatar no ha podido comprarse dicha felicidad; hoy, aunque han lavado un poco su imagen y han mostrado un mejor futbol que aquel del partido inaugural, se han convertido en la primera nación anfitriona en cosechar dos derrotas seguidas en la historia de los Mundiales y con ello han quedado eliminadas de su Copa muy temprano.
Senegal hizo un partido por debajo del nivel que mostraron ante Países Bajos, sin embargo, tuvieron aquello de lo que adolecieron ante la Naranja Mecánica: Contundencia. Los Leones de Teranga supieron romper el cero al minuto 41’ por conducto de Boulaye Dia que, con su gol, ponía fin a una racha de 269 minutos sin gol en la Copa del Mundo para los senegaleses. El gol de Dia comenzaba a perfilar a Senegal en dirección de cumplir su tarea en el encuentro, la de conseguir una victoria que los mantuviera con vida de cara a la última jornada en la que habrán de enfrentarse a Ecuador.

La Selección Qatarí tiró de orgullo para encontrar el descuento en su favor; un kilométrico pelotazo encontró a Ismaeel Mohammad para que desde línea de fondo enviara un centro preciso que Mohammed Muntari firmaría de cabeza para marcar el primer gol de Qatar en la historia de los Mundiales.
Fantasmas se agolpaban sobre Senegal que se notaba nerviosa e imprecisa tras el tanto del conjunto anfitrión; pero al minuto 84’ los Leones de Teranga ahuyentaron los fantasmas que les aquejaban por mediación de un tremendo pase en diagonal de Ndiaye para que Bamba Dieng rubricara los tres puntos de la selección africana y la ilusión de competir por un sitio en Octavos de final. Gran victoria para una Senegal que lució menos que en su primer encuentro.
Almost at the start of the second half, Jakobs put a corner kick to the near edge of the six-yard box and found Famara Diédhiou with pinpoint accuracy to put the game beyond the reach of a Qatar side who were making life difficult for them through their momentum, despite their limitations, with Akram Afif confirming himself as the best player the Arab nation possesses. It was a great win for a Senegal side that looked less impressive than in their opening match.

ECUADOR DESERVED BETTER
En el Estadio Internacional de Khalifa, la Tri de Gustavo Alfaro tenía una cita con la historia, Ecuador enfrentaba a Países Bajos que es una de esas selecciones armadas hasta los dientes con un profundo arsenal de talento. Ecuador emocionó a su gente; pasó de ir escuchando ninguneos durante toda la eliminatoria de CONMEBOL con pronósticos constantes de que ser terminarían cayendo en la lucha por conseguir un boleto a la Copa del Mundo a jugar el partido inaugural y pintarle la cara con solvencia a una anfitriona que ha probado ser tan gris.
Y si de grises tonalidades hablamos, es menester mencionar a Países Bajos -aunque de un brillante color naranja vistan- el brillo está en su camiseta y quizá en el peso de la misma que ya le había permitido solventar con victoria un partido sin lustre ante Senegal con los goles de Gakpo y Klaassen; pero en esta ocasión no iba a alcanzara ganar con ese mismo desempeño tan mezquino en relación al potencial de su arsenal futbolístico.
Muy temprano en el partido encontraría un gol el conjunto neerlandés, tras un error de Caicedo en la entrega tras haber recuperado la pelota Klaassen sirvió a Gakpo -los dos nombres propios del encuentro anterior al servicio de van Gaal- y Cody buscó el espacio para golpear con un magistral zurdazo las aspiraciones ecuatorianas; un gol que en teoría sumaría a los sudamericanos en la duda profunda y el desconcierto, terminó siendo todo lo contrario.
At Khalifa International Stadium, Gustavo Alfaro's Tri had a date with history, Ecuador faced the Netherlands, one of those teams armed to the hilt with a deep arsenal of talent. Ecuador thrilled their fans; they went from listening to the naysayers throughout the CONMEBOL qualifiers with constant predictions that they would end up going down in the fight for a World Cup ticket to playing in the opening match and painting a picture of a host nation that has proven to be so grey.
And if we are talking about grey shades, it is necessary to mention the Netherlands - although they are bright orange - the brightness is in their shirt and perhaps in the weight of it, which had already allowed them to win a lacklustre match against Senegal with goals from Gakpo and Klaassen; but on this occasion they were not going to win with the same paltry performance in relation to the potential of their footballing arsenal.
Very early in the match the Dutch side would find a goal, after a mistake by Caicedo in the delivery after recovering the ball Klaassen set up Gakpo - the two names of the previous match in the service of van Gaal - and Cody looked for the space to hit with a masterful left-footed shot the Ecuadorian aspirations; a goal that in theory would put the South Americans in deep doubt and bewilderment, ended up being quite the opposite.
El mazazo de Gakpo tuvo el mismo efecto de aquello que sucede cuando un niño, por travesura propia de la edad, se le ocurre pisar un hormiguero; Ecuador se alborotó cual colonia de hormigas, tuvieron una reacción furibunda tras el golpe y comenzaron a cortarle los circuitos a los neerlandeses que la pasaron mal durante todo el encuentro.
Enner Valencia ya había sido el primer héroe en el desierto, es el alma de este colectivo ecuatoriano que juega muy bien al fútbol con un estilo definido y que hoy ha demostrado estar más que a la altura de las circunstancias. Volvió a aparecer Enner Remberto Valencia Lastra para firmar un gol determinante para su equipo; el delantero de San Lorenzo es el autor de los últimos 6 goles de su selección en Copas del Mundo y, hoy, ha salido entre lágrimas por culpa de esa rodilla que tanto le aqueja. Ecuador fue más que su poderoso rival, generó más fútbol y mejores sensaciones, en definitiva merecía más que el simple empate que obtuvo. La Oranje tiene mucho que mejorar si quiere trascender aunque tiene por delante a la débil Qatar de cara a cerrar la fase de grupos.

La selección inglesa partía como favorita por historia y por presente en el choque ante los Estados Unidos en el Estadio Al Bayt, sobre todo después del huracán de fútbol y goles que ofrecieron los ingleses ante Irán en la jornada uno. Ha caído un nuevo partido sin goles en Qatar, ¡Creo y van cinco! Un empate que deja vivos a todos los equipos dentro del grupo por lo que el martes Inglaterra choca contra Galés y Estados Unidos contra Irán; los cuatro se lo juegan todo.
Inglaterra se ha notado espesa ante el dinamismo de Estados Unidos que se veía bien con y sin la pelota; tras la algarabía y la inevitable ilusión a ultranza de la goleada en su estreno Mundialista, a los Three Lions se les agolparon las desilusiones de tiempos recientes que los vieron caer en la penumbra de la Nations League. ¿Habrá sido la goleada ante el cuadro Persa un simple espejismo, una quimera vacía?
Los británicos no han podido ganarle nunca a Estados Unidos en una Copa Mundial de la FIFA, el histórico ha quedado en una derrota y es el segundo empate en su historia entre sí. Un nuevo pasaje gris de Gareth Southgate en el banquillo, no supo contrarrestar la dinámica que proponían los de Berhalther en el terreno de juego; Inglaterra se veía atascado y por momentos incluso rebasado por la propuesta de Estados Unidos. El seleccionador inglés ni volteó a ver a Phil Foden como una opción para buscar mayor desequilibrio y asociación. Estados Unidos fue perdiendo energía y todo quedó en un nuevo par de ceros en los arcos. Inglaterra lo tiene servido para pasar como cabeza de grupo si no pierde ante Gales, Estados Unidos jugará una “guerra sin cuartel” ante Irán.
England were historical and current favourites to face the USA at the Al Bayt Stadium, especially after the hurricane of football and goals they produced against Iran on matchday one. Another goalless draw in Qatar, I reckon and that's five! A draw that leaves all teams alive in the group so England face Welsh on Tuesday and the USA face Iran; all four have everything to play for.
England have looked dulled by the dynamism of the United States, who looked good with and without the ball; after the excitement and the inevitable illusion of the goal in their World Cup opener, the Three Lions were overwhelmed by the disillusionment of recent times that saw them fall into the gloom of the Nations League. Was the goal against the Persians a mere mirage, an empty chimera?
The British have never beaten the United States at a FIFA World Cup, the all-time record is a defeat and this is only the second draw in their history. Another drab performance from Gareth Southgate on the bench failed to counteract the dynamic that Berhalther's side were proposing on the pitch; England looked bogged down and at times even overwhelmed by the USA's approach. The England coach did not even turn to Phil Foden as an option to look for more unbalance and association. The United States was losing energy and it all came down to another pair of clean sheets. England are guaranteed to go through as group winners if they do not lose to Wales, while the USA will play an "all-out war" against Iran.

It been a while brother, Wales did not show they want to compete in the world cup, they have been bad but they still have hope all they have to do is beat England to qualify for the next round . Good work from Iran they showed their fighting spirits on the field, they just have to win their last gave to move to the next round.

Resultados que se esperaban dentro de lo que dicta la lógica, y sorpresas que con el transcurso de los partidos hemos estado viendo... no hay competición de fútbol sin sorpresas, porque nada está escrito.
Me sorprendió mucho que Phil Foden no haya entrado a la cancha de juego, no sé si el seleccionador de Inglaterra prefirió resguardarlo de cara al próximo encuentro contra Gales porque está confiado de que puede ganarles.
De verdad que este Mundial nos ha estado regalando una lección de vida, no todo siempre va a resultar como uno piensa, no puedo esperar a ver cómo se desarrollarán los demás encuentros, ahora es que falta por ver.

Totalmente de acuerdo, con el rodar de la pelota, nada está escrito y las sorpresas siempre suelen asaltar a la lógica; mucho del sabor de este deporte que tanto nos gusta proviene de su carácter de impredecible.
Lo de Foden, lo hablaba en mi análisis en @golazo-fc con @dedicatedguy y @fermionico, aparentemente, para Southgate, Phil es jugador de Quidditch porque no contó para su entrenador en el momento en que necesitaba un factor de desequilibrio y capacidad de asociación que rompiese la dinámica en fase defensiva que bien había impuesto Berhalter.
Es verdad que está Copa nos está dejando muchas emociones y la lectura de grandísimas lecciones. Toca seguir disfrutando y aprendiendo, querida amiga.
