En mi estudio de este apasionante deporte siempre me han llamado la atención varios eventos que se han destacado por su fortaleza, por la gran rivalidad entre sus competidores, por la calidad del evento y por su duración en el tiempo. Uno de los torneos que este autor recuerda con mucho cariño es el de San Sebastián en España y que se jugó en 1911 y 1912.
Principalmente recuerdo el primero de estos porque el ganador fue un joven trebejista cubano, de quien se cuestionaba su participación y que terminó ganando ese fuerte torneo. Seis años después se convertiría en Campeón del Mundo, su nombre: José Raúl Capablanca.
Otro torneo de gran relevancia internacional fue el torneo de Linares. Este evento, al igual que el anterior se celebró en España y tuvo como mérito el haber reunido en cada edición a los mejores ajedrecistas del año. En este torneo se destacó Garry Kasparov quien fue su máximo ganador.
Sin embargo, el torneo Tata Steel los supera, por su longevidad, permanencia en el circuito competitivo del ajedrez, calidad de los participantes, rivalidad y por la gran cantidad de ajedrecistas de primer nivel que han participado en cada una de las ediciones.
Breves del Tata Steel.
Varios elementos distinguen al torneo holandés Tata Steel y que sin ánimo de hacer extensa esta publicación el autor considera que debe dar a conocer, pues es uno de los que más ha disfrutado y a los que más seguimiento le ha dado, como corresponsal deportivo y estudioso que ha sido de este y otros deportes que le apasionan. A partir de lo anterior aquí les dejo algunos datos de interés:
•Es uno de los torneos de ajedrez más antiguos que existen, sus 85 ediciones así lo atestiguan.
•Es un torneo que ha mutado de nombres varias veces. Se ha llamado Wijk aan Zee, Tata Steel, Corus, etc.
•Es un torneo que lo han ganado varios campeones del mundo y/o ajedrecistas de renombre internacional. Entre otros, Max Euwe, Tigran Petrosian, Mijail Tal Garry Kasparov, Anatoli Karpov, entre otros muchos.
•El ajedrecista que más veces lo ha ganado es el noruego Magnus Carlsen y el otro gran animador ha sido el extraclase indio Viswanatan Anand.

El torneo de 2023 se jugó en el mes de enero que es la fecha habitual desde la fundación del torneo, por allá por finales de los años 30 del pasado siglo. Al igual que en ediciones anteriores reunió a un número importante de los mejores jugadores del mundo que lucharían por llevarse el primer gran torneo del año.
Para tener una idea del calibre de los participantes baste decir que estaban los primeros jugadores del ranking mundial de la FIDE: el actual campeón mundial Magnus Carlsen y el chino Ding Liren; estuvieron presentes un número importante de los mejores talentos jóvenes del ajedrez mundial y que han demostrado su pujanza, como el uzbeko Nodirbek Abdusattorov y el prodigio de 17 años tan difícil de descifrara como su apellido Praggnanandhaa R.
Además, participaron otros jugadores que desde hace varios años son habituales en torneos zonales, copas del mundo, mundiales de partidas rápidas, olimpiadas y otros eventos, en los que han acumulado un número importante de puntos para su ELO (puntuación de los ajedrecistas) que los han convertido en verdaderos guerreros de este deporte.
Mis impresiones, sobre el torneo y el vencedor.

Confieso que tenía pensado que el ganador del evento estaría entre esto cuatro ajedrecistas: Magnus Carlsen, Levon Aronian, Nodirbek Abdusattorov o el chino Ding Liren. Y no es que no pudiera ganarlo otro de los participantes, pero el palmarés, estado de forma y buen momento que atraviesa este cuarteto hacían presagiar el cumplimiento de mis pronósticos.
¿En qué basaba mi pronóstico?
Carlsen es el actual campeón del mundo, número 1 del ranking mundial y máximo ganador de estos torneos. Aronian es uno de los que en mayo va a discutir la corona mundial y ha sido el retador de las dos últimas ediciones. Nodirbek Abdusattorov es el jugador que más me ha impresionado en los dos últimos años, ganó la medalla de oro en el 1er tablero de la olimpiada del 2022 y está en inmejorable forma.
Por último, el chino Ding Liren ocupa el segundo lugar del escalafón mundial y será el otro aspirante al título mundial que se efectuará en mayo de este año.
Pronóstico fuera del tablero.
El torneo comenzó con posibilidades para que se cumpliera mi pronóstico y en la medida que iba pasando cada una de las rondas se daban resultados interesantes, pero mis favoritos no iban mal y uno se mantuvo durante todo o casi todo el torneo al frente de la competencia: Nodirbek Abdusattorov.
¿Qué pasó entonces?
•Aronian y Ding fueron dejando muchos puntos en el camino al pactar muchas tablas durante las rondas
•Carlsen perdió dos partidas consecutivas, algo que no le ocurría desde hacía varios años y a pesar del esfuerzo final este no le alcanzó
•Nodirbek Abdusattorov fue de los jugadores más sólidos del torneo, pero no pudo ganar la última partida que le hubiese otorgado el título de campeón de este torneo. Quizás la juventud, las ansias de ganarle a un rival que ya había derrotado o la presión psicológica le jugaron una mala pasada.
Lo cierto es que ninguno de mis cuatro favoritos se coronó.
¿Quién ganó?
Se impuso un jugador de casa, Anish Giri, quien supo mantener su juego equilibrado, demostró la experticia que tiene, a pesar de su juventud, logró ganar las partidas necesarias y se mantuvo siempre en el pelotón de vanguardia.
Este jugador no es un eléctrico ni mucho menos, pues en 5 ocasiones ha alcanzado el segundo lugar de este torneo y actualmente ocupa el quinto lugar del escalafón mundial. Su fortaleza en las aperturas, su juego de posición, su solidez en el medio juego y su sabiduría para jugar las finales le han dado buenos resultados y esta ocasión no fue diferente.
Un Jaque Mate Final
Ha concluido uno de los grandes torneos del ajedrez mundial y más allá del resultado final varias lecturas se pueden sacar de su desarrollo: el empuje de los jóvenes talentos, la gran cantidad de jugadores excepcionales que hay en el mundo y la solidez y consolidación de otros que como Magnus Carlsen mantienen un elevado nivel de juego.
Gracias a torneos como este el ajedrez es tan popular en muchos países del mundo y su práctica sirve para desarrollar el intelecto y la manera de pensar de los seres humanos. Una de las ventajas que tiene esta práctica deportiva es que le ofrece a los niños y jóvenes variantes de pensamientos y los enseña a buscar varias soluciones antes un problema que pueda presentar se en sus vidas.
El primer gran evento ajedrecístico del año augura que serán 12 meses de muchos tableros, reyes, reinas y peones. Ahora mismo se está desarrollando la olimpiada mundial para personas con discapacidad que demuestra el carácter inclusivo del deporte y en mayo se celebrará el match por el título mundial de ajedrez que marcará la asunción al trono de un nuevo monarca, luego de la renuncia de Carlsen a su defensa. En estos y otros torneos que se desarrollarán durante el año 2023 el Tata Steel de Holanda abrió el camino, para decirnos que será un gran año para el ajedrez mundial.

On Sunday, January 29, one of the strongest chess tournaments in recent years came to an end, and not precisely because the previous ones were less so, but because several of the best chess players of the moment joined in this one, among those who occupy the first places in the ranking of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) and because several of the most talented young people of the so-called science sport competed.

In my study of this exciting sport I have always been struck by several events that have stood out for their strength, for the great rivalry among its competitors, for the quality of the event and for its duration in time. One of the tournaments that this author remembers with great affection is the San Sebastian tournament in Spain, which was played in 1911 and 1912.
I mainly remember the first of these because the winner was a young Cuban trebejista, whose participation was questioned and who ended up winning that strong tournament. Six years later he would become World Champion, his name: José Raúl Capablanca.
Another tournament of great international relevance was the Linares tournament. This event, like the previous one, was held in Spain and had the merit of having brought together in each edition the best chess players of the year. Garry Kasparov stood out in this tournament and was its maximum winner.
However, the Tata Steel tournament surpasses them, for its longevity, permanence in the competitive chess circuit, quality of the participants, rivalry and the large number of top chess players who have participated in each of the editions.

Several elements distinguish the Dutch Tata Steel tournament and that without the intention of making this publication extensive, the author considers that it should be made known, since it is one of those that he has enjoyed the most and to which he has given more follow-up, as sports correspondent and scholar that he has been of this and other sports that he is passionate about. Based on the above, here are some interesting facts:
- It is one of the oldest chess tournaments in existence, its 85 editions attest to that.
- It is a tournament that has changed its name several times. It has been called Wijk aan Zee, Tata Steel, Corus, etc.
- It is a tournament that has been won by several world champions and/or internationally renowned chess players. Among others, Max Euwe, Tigran Petrosian, Mikhail Tal Garry Kasparov, Anatoli Karpov, among many others.

The 2023 tournament was played in the month of January, which is the usual date since the founding of the tournament, back in the late 30's of the last century. As in previous editions, it brought together a significant number of the world's best players who would fight to win the first major tournament of the year.
To have an idea of the caliber of the participants, suffice it to say that the top players of the FIDE world ranking were present: the current world champion Magnus Carlsen and the Chinese Ding Liren; an important number of the best young talents of world chess were present and who have demonstrated their strength, such as the Uzbek Nodirbek Abdusattorov and the 17-year-old prodigy as difficult to decipher as his surname Praggnanandhaa R.
In addition, other players participated who for several years have been regulars in zonal tournaments, world cups, world rapid tournaments, Olympiads and other events, in which they have accumulated a significant number of points for their ELO (chess players' rating) that have made them true warriors of this sport.
My impressions, about the tournament and the winner.
I confess that I had thought that the winner of the event would be among these four players: Magnus Carlsen, Levon Aronian, Nodirbek Abdusattorov or the Chinese Ding Liren. And it is not that another of the participants could not win it, but the track record, form and good moment that this quartet is going through made me predict the fulfillment of my predictions.
What was my prediction based on?
Carlsen is the current world champion, number 1 in the world ranking and maximum winner of these tournaments. Aronian is one of those who in May is going to dispute the world crown and has been the challenger of the last two editions. Nodirbek Abdusattorov is the player who has impressed me the most in the last two years, he won the gold medal in the 1st board of the 2022 Olympiad and is in excellent shape.
Finally, China's Ding Liren is in second place in the world ranking and will be the other contender for the world title to be held in May this year.
Forecast off the board.
The tournament started with possibilities for my prediction to be fulfilled and as each round went by there were interesting results, but my favorites were not doing badly and one remained during the whole or almost the whole tournament in the lead: Nodirbek Abdusattorov.
What happened then?
- Aronian and Ding were leaving many points on the way by agreeing many draws during the rounds.
- Carlsen lost two games in a row, something that had not happened for several years and despite the final effort it was not enough for him.
- Nodirbek Abdusattorov was one of the most solid players of the tournament, but he could not win the last game that would have given him the title of champion of this tournament. Perhaps his youth, his eagerness to beat a rival he had already defeated or the psychological pressure played a dirty trick on him.
The truth is that none of my four favorites was crowned.
Who won?

A home player, Anish Giri, won, who knew how to keep his game balanced, showed the experience he has, despite his youth, managed to win the necessary games and always remained in the leading group.
This player is not an electric player by any means, since he has reached the second place in this tournament on 5 occasions and currently occupies the fifth place in the world ranking. His strength in the openings, his positional play, his solidity in the middlegame and his wisdom to play the endgame have given him good results and this occasion was no different.
A Final Checkmate
One of the great world chess tournaments has concluded and beyond the final result several readings can be drawn from its development: the drive of young talents, the large number of exceptional players in the world and the solidity and consolidation of others who, like Magnus Carlsen, maintain a high level of play.
Thanks to tournaments like this, chess is so popular in many countries around the world and its practice serves to develop the intellect and way of thinking of human beings. One of the advantages of this sport practice is that it offers children and young people variants of thoughts and teaches them to look for various solutions before a problem that may arise in their lives.
The first major chess event of the year promises that it will be 12 months of many boards, kings, queens and pawns. Right now, the world Olympics for people with disabilities is taking place, which demonstrates the inclusive nature of the sport, and in May the match for the world chess title will be held, which will mark the assumption of a new monarch to the throne, after Carlsen's resignation from his defense. In these and other tournaments that will take place during the year 2023, Tata Steel from the Netherlands led the way, to tell us that it will be a great year for world chess.
