It is a fact that fans of a certain team, whether it is soccer, baseball, basketball, turn all their hopes on the outcome of the victory when they face their rivals; phrases like "they have to win", "they can not lose", are extremely common and the truth is that they make all the sense in the world because who would bet on defeat? People are always looking for satisfaction, positive results are guarantors of those endorphins that produce chemical reactions in our organism, winning is more fun than losing, in fact, it could be said that victories are "healthier"; but what about the other side, what does an athlete experience in terms of competitive results? In this post I analyze what an athlete faces when he/she encounters defeat and what can be done about it.

Let's talk from the "paper" perspective, a result is nothing more than a number, a digit or digits that fill a scoreboard, clearly we live in a world governed by mathematics, it is not surprising then that we pursue figures that guide us to "what is worth more" and "what is worth less", everything we want to quantify, everything we want to quantify. We want to quantify everything. Adding, subtracting, gaining, losing, are intuitive concepts in people. This quantitative nature gives us the basis to define that most sports are "sum 0" that is, the victory of a team represents the defeat of the other, there are not many options, either you win or you lose (there is also a draw) for this reason people want the victory, they want a point.

Ahora bien,

In chess there are 3 possible outcomes: victory, defeat and draw (equivalent to a draw). If you were to consult the results of chess games (and other sports) you would see simple numbers, the truth is that there is a whole story behind those figures, after all it is the people who give meaning to all the competitiveness, the numbers narrate the events objectively but the subjective aspects are very important. Now then,

Why do we lose?

. As we have seen at the beginning the defeat exists and that's it, the human condition itself has determined this, the 0-sum game is inescapable, however we can determine with more or less certain precision the origin of the defeats, although as I say, being a result of two possible or 3 if the sport allows ties, the chances of losing range from 50% to 33% respectively. Among the most common agents that can amplify that percentage of defeat we have: -Poor technical preparation -Deconcentration -Overconfidence Being outplayed by a much stronger opponent -Overconfidence

The world of sports is complex, there are many variables at play, there are so many factors that increase the chances of a defeat, even the most experienced suffer the loss of a match, which is why part of the training should be devoted to how to deal with this scenario. Defeat is bitter but it is a "common" situation, it is the opinion of the masses that tortures us when we reach a state of defeat

When you lose a game of chess for example, the person enters a kind of depressive state in which little by little the mind is filled with noise, remorse: "if only I had played a little better", "I was about to win but I was wrong", these thoughts do nothing but hinder our future performance or even worse, they strip us of the beautiful practice of the sport itself; each person has different aspirations but the common point is that we practice a discipline because we like it, because it is good for our health, keeps us fit and makes our lives more enjoyable, when we lose we forget this completely and we plunge into that relentless sea of negativity.

Something that happened to me

.It has happened to all of us and more than once. Stories of some defeat there are plenty; as a personal experience there was a game that caused havoc in my thoughts for a long time, specifically in 2018, our team was preparing to play The World Cup for teams for visually impaired people in the city of Sofia Bulgaria, I remember that trip was quite eventful in terms of budget and transfer, we were stranded for long hours at the airports of Madrid and Moscow respectively, with a high fatigue accumulated by the journey we could reach Sofia a few hours of the round, that was practically getting off the plane and to play the game. We had to face the strong country of Germany, our group was exhausted but no matter what we went ahead and faced this team with a lot of courage. As the match progressed, we had very good prospects, in fact I had a totally won game against the International Master Oliver Muller, the match was about to conclude, I expected my opponent to abandon because there was not much to do for him, when suddenly ...A rookie mistake, I let myself make a double and lost the rook, it was unbelievable, the whole game room was petrified, I started to sweat cold and with the pulses at maximum, it was there, the imminent blow of defeat. Psychologically that affected me too much, let's say it was like losing a soccer game when you were winning 3 to 0 in the 85th minute, a total disaster.

The previous anecdote is a clear example of defeat due to fatigue, which consequently leads to lack of concentration, something that is very costly in sports. Losing is part of the game and as such we must take advantage of it

Winning streaks are not eternal

Many are concerned in this sense, but the truth is that the performance curve of an athlete is not exponential or at least not for life, let's say a player who is on the rise, his performance will rise steeply but at a certain point will begin to lateralize, keeping results more or less in the range of the average. This is because the more active the player is the more exposed he will be to 50% or 33% of the defeat and if we add to that the presence of errors and that the opponents are constantly studying their strategies, the effectiveness decreases even more, you can not always win, it's that easy. There are players who maintain a more or less stable performance but when the time comes their results graph will decline over time

What to do when you lose?

.Everyone has particular ways to manage their failures, I do not think there is a formula to mitigate 100% the effects of losing a game. However with my experience I can mention certain nuances that might help a little: 1-Removing Pressure, this is not something automatic but it can be worked, when losing our main concern is that our ego was bent, that we could not be able to overcome our rival, but these things have more prominence in our mind, real life continues and the sun will not stop rising because you have lost. My recommendation is, try to look for a distraction when this happens, maybe work on your breathing, go for a run, meditate, that is, look for an alternative activity at that moment that helps you to release that hot smoke in your head. 2-Let's take advantage of the defeats, clearly, losing is just another result, therefore we must know how to take advantage of it, we learn from the defeats, the problem is when we do not know, we cannot or we do not want to recognize where we have failed. Bad moments are excellent teachers, a successful person has been someone who has faced many failures and more importantly, who has managed to learn from their mistakes.

¿?Hay alguna forma de no perder

No.

Separador 4.png

Is there a way not to lose?

No.

The presence of error is something innate in people, we are always going to make mistakes, maybe more or less frequently, but we are not exempt from losses, remember the % of the sum 0.

Although, if he could mention that "to enjoy is to do well". Stress is a clear trigger of mistakes, if we play our game more relaxed and enjoying the moment, the possibility of making mistakes will decrease a little.

To close, I would like you to take your defeats as the best opportunity to grow, it is trite to say it but from mistakes you learn and your goal should be to overcome your "I" of the past and not spend your life engrossed in a table of results, defeat hurts but it will hurt more if you seek to be a better athlete, a better person. Thanks for reading, as always I share with you fulldeportes community my critical analysis, always based on my experience of almost 20 years in competitive chess. And you, how do you handle defeat?

Sort:
