Hive Stake Based Income

Hive Stake Based Income (Hive SBI) is a social experiment to bring a voluntary crowd-funded basic income to as many Hivers as possible. Members join by sponsoring others into the program. Hive SBI is delivered through providing regular upvotes to member posts.

Member rshares Balances

When an account is enrolled in Hive SBI, we begin tracking an rshares balance for that member. rshares are the unit that Steem uses to calculate rewards. Whenever you upvote, the witness checks your VP% and SP to calculate how many rshares your upvote is worth. This is the actual value used to track your upvote values on Steem, and the method that Hive SBI uses to track your pending upvote value.

Value Sources

There are currently two sources of value that contribute to each member's pending upvote value. How each source works is more fully described in our FAQ, but the sources are Standard Units and Bonus Units (primarily from delegation to @steembasicincome).

Pending Value

Picture separate water sources that fill a pending vote tank for each member. The flow from each source into the tank is dependent on enrollment level and delegation to @steembasicincome. Increasing your enrollment or delegation will immediately increase the size of that source, and therefore the rate at which it contributes value to the tank.

It still takes time for the rate change to impact the total pending value in the tank.

Value Delivery

To prevent 'dust' penalties, the minimum upvote we deliver is $0.02 per post, and we only deliver up to 33% of pending value at a time. Each time a member posts, we check their pending upvote balance and open the 'valve' if their pending value is large enough to support a minimum upvote. This is calculated at the low end of the CLRC curve, so most upvotes will be larger than $0.02, even if delivered as a 'minimum upvote'.

Voting Accounts

When the valve is opened, one of our voting accounts is activated to deliver the upvote. We select the highest VP account that can deliver the entire upvote size. If no account can deliver enough rshares to fulfill the vote, we vote from as many accounts as it takes to deliver the whole value. If we vote from all ten and still can't deliver the value, the valve closes and only the amount we can deliver is removed from the tank.

Recommended Hive SBI Levels

Note: this section is not financial advice, but could help you have a better Hive SBI experience.

It normally takes a subscription level of $3 worth of Hive SBI for a weekly upvote, or $20 worth for a daily upvote. (Divide 20 by HIVE price in USD to estimate total Hive SBI subscription needed). Lower subscription levels will still receive regular upvotes, but they will be less frequent.

Increasing your Hive SBI subscription (or delegation level) increases your upvote frequency. Once your subscription is high enough for your tank refill rate to power an upvote on every post, then increasing your subscription (or delegation level) will increase your upvote sizes instead.

Value Estimates

These charts can help you better predict your results from various combinations of enrollment, delegation, and regular upvoting. They are based on current STEEM prices and reward pool behavior. Their predictive ability is limited as STEEM prices and reward pool behavior are constantly changing. The calculations assume upvotes are valued at post payout at the bottom of the CLRC. That means the estimates are conservative; most members will have a better experience than shown.

Enrollment

Send 1 HIVE to @steembasicincome. Include the name of a Hive account to sponsor in the transaction memo (preceded by @). You and the person you sponsor will each receive 1 subscription unit in the program. You can sponsor any active Hiver, except for your own account.

It will be interesting to see how migration choices affect both programs. We do have options for people to transfer membership from either chain to the other if they don't plan on using both chains. Out of curiosity is there some sort of time line on SBI shares? I hold several, but haven't received any SBI votes on my latest post? Do they have an expiry date now or have terms changed since migrating to hive? Again I'm asking out of curiosity mainly.

EDIT TLDR: after researching and then explaining everything it's a wall of text, so here's the short version. Your vote is delayed but you should get it soon!

Was going to share the link that explains delivery timelines, but then I realized this comment is on that article. So I guess that link won't really help you!

Basically it's like this: There is a minimum upvote value of $0.02. Your units are continually gaining 'pending upvote balance', but you have to have $0.06 in pending balance to get your next upvote. Each vote uses 1/3 of your pending balance.

We generally recommend at least $20 worth. It does take a few days before sudden spikes in HIVE price effect the calculations, though. So that's more like $20 worth at a 7-day average price (which is more like 40-50 units, rather than the 20 units it will be if HIVE can hold $1 for any meaningful amount of time).

Edit: I just checked your levels and you should be receiving consistent votes, so I'll dig in a little more and see if I can figure out what's happening!

Edit 2: Ah, okay so it's just your latest post 40 minutes ago. We updated the minimum upvote value today to partially reflect the big price run. The result is that 'minimum deliverable' in rshares decreased by about 25%. When it's a big move like that, a lot of members that were still accruing toward their next vote 'suddenly' have enough and the bot starts delivering catch-up votes on everyone's latest posts still pending payout. Your post was published during the catch-up period (which is still ongoing) and it should receive a vote when the bot catches up to it.

Ah, ok. That makes sense. I've not had as much time as I'd like to keep up with everything happening in Hive space lately. I try to get the odd vote and read in along with the occasional post, but not as current as I used to be. So I wasn't sure if maybe something had changed along the way. It is Hive so something is always going on that's new.

You accrue upvote value at a sustainable level, and we deliver an $0.02 upvote as soon as you have accrued enough pending upvote value. The actual frequency of upvote for any given membership level is primarily driven by HIVE price (higher price, more frequent upvotes, lower price, less frequent upvotes). We have no control over the price, so we cannot accurately predict upvote frequency or value for any particular membership level.
