Making a Rosary with a Centerpiece (ENG/ESP)

in Jewelrylast year

This post will take you step-by-step through the process of making a rosary that features a centerpiece medal. The rosary I will construct in this post is designed, as was the paracord rosary in my last post, for praying the Chaplet of The Divine Mercy, but you are free to substitute stones of any color to create a rosary that you prefer.

These are the tools and supplies that I used: split ring pliers, a rosary knotting tool, scissors, a rosary centerpiece and crucifix, cord (I used leather cord), and beads. I used round, silver-colored, plastic beads for the Our Father beads and red and clear, faceted, glass beads for the Hail Mary beads. You can also add optional medals to the rosary, as I added a Divine Mercy medal to my rosary. The centerpiece and crucifix are shown with split rings attached, but I decided to remove the split rings and string the cord through the original holes. Another item that isn't shown here but that is helpful in securing your knots is Hypo Cement. Let's get started!

I started my rosary with five feet of cord. Begin a barrel knot by looping one end of the cord around the rosary knotting tool, and then around a second time.

Pass the end of the cord through the channel.

To turn the barrel knot into a loop, pass the end of the cord through the crucifix ring and backwards through the channel.

Slide the knot off of the tool and shape and tighten it. KNOW YOUR CORD - the leather cord that I used will break if you pull too tight.

Trim the short end of the cord to make it easier to work with. Then, use the rosary tool to tie a second barrel knot a little ways above the first knot.

String your first Our Father bead...

...and tie a barrel knot just above it.

String three Hail Mary beads and then tie another barrel knot.

Add the second Our Father bead and another barrel knot. I like to tie the knots as close as possible to the Our Father beads, but leave a small space above the Hail Mary beads to allow them to slide, making it easier to count them while praying.

Leave a short space, and then tie another barrel knot, passing the cord down the channel, through the bottom loop of the centerpiece, and back up the channel, as we did with the crucifix.

Shape and tighten the knot...

...then adjust the loop to the same size as the crucifix loop.

Cut the cord near the knot, and use the cord to start the main part of the rosary by creating a loop and barrel knot on one side of the centerpiece, just like you did when attaching the crucifix and the bottom of the centerpiece.

You can add optional medals to your rosary on either side of the centerpiece when you tie the loop/barrel knot.

String ten Hail Mary beads, tie a barrel knot, add an Our Father bead, and tie another barrel knot.

Continue along the cord, adding ten Hail Mary beads at a time, followed by a barrel knot, an Our Father bead, and another barrel knot, until you have completed five decades (ten beads) of Hail Mary beads.

Tie a final barrel knot that loops through the final loop of the centerpiece, adding another medal if you choose to do so. Try to make all of the loops the same size.

Cut the loose ends of the cords close to the knots. To make it less likely that the loops attaching the crucifix and centerpiece will come loose, you can glue them.
