I made my rails from steel fence posts, the T posts. I had to grind off the bumps on the back of the posts so they would lay flat on the wood ties, or sleepers as some people call them.
There are places that sell aluminum rail that is 1 inch tall that is used for railroads like the one I'm building. However, shipping is expensive, and I don't live close enough to a supplier to go and pick them up.
