Even though this was a topic for shorts, I couldn’t really make this post short. So, its safe to say I failed. I have a tendency to go on and on about the things I like, and in this post I've done just that, even though I tried my hardest to keep my opinions to a bare minimum.
Well, it is what it is. So let's move on towards the subject at hand.
Favourite Fantasy Characters.
Now, this is a tough pick for me. Because compared to others, I haven't really indulged in heavy fantasy that much. While I am a fan of the Marvel and DC franchise, none of the characters ever did make the cut for me, as I'm incredibly picky when it comes to choosing favourites.
I'm a person who is fond of complex characters. Wheather it be fantasy or fictional characters, I like those who have their own set of complicated emotions and ideals, and it's their way of handling situations makes them stand out to me among the rest. I like characters with a sharp mind and a heart full of dilemmas. The clash of emotions and morals is what intrigues me, and finding a character that fits all these criteria, is, well, hard.
The first one that comes to mind would always be King Laurent of Vere the Sixth, from The Captive Prince Trilogy.

A man with an iron fist on his emotions, he has been one of the most intelligent characters I've got to read about in my life. He is one of those who hide behind a stone-cold face, but unlike the rest, this man holds on to this shield of his until the very last chapter of the book, when finally we get to see his back story, and just a hint of his true self emerges. And let's not forget that he is, a Prince with a brain that is bound to leave you baffled.
The second in place will obviously go to my most favourite Shizun, Chu Wanning, from the Chinese danmei Erha, who is another man with a stone-cold mask.

"Two lifetimes, they belong to you, No regrets.."
But unlike our Laurent, he is someone who doesn't even know how to express his emotions. So by locking them away, this man silently performs some of the most heartwrenching deeds behind the shadows, which don't come to light anytime soon in the novel. Let's also not forget the level of power he possesses, and the amount of control he has over his abilities.
Then there is Hua Cheng from Tian Guan Ci Fu.

Now this dude. A man turned ghost turned the most powerful ghost to rule the mortal realm. Defier of the gods and also the most dedicated devote.
And then there is Lan Wangji from Mo Dao Zu Shi..
A man of culture and tradition! The ideal poster boy of the class who always comes first. But what hides underneath that stoic mask of his is...well, another story..:')
The things all of these characters have in common is their complex emotions, incomparable power, sharp cunning mind and ambiguous morals. And this is exactly how I like my fantasy characters.
Utterly fucked up, yet completely beautiful.
