The Problem: Women in developing countries are excluded from economic decision-making in the society

Personally, I am touched by the fate of women in developing countries like those in Africa. Women are excluded from most economic opportunities reserved for me. There is that gender inequality when it comes to economic opportunities. Systematically, women are looked upon as inferior to men and should remain silent when it comes to economic decision-making at home and elsewhere. In some places, they are not allowed to obtain some level of education or training that only men are meant to have. Women in some parts of the world have a very small representation in government, in the job sector and other areas of modern society. As a result, many young women with talents are skills are reduced to poverty and are left to simply observe, rather than participate, in the economic development of their immediate environment.

As a graduate of Computer Science, I realized how technology education could be used as a powerful tool to give women the voice they deserve. For example, giving women technology education and skills can help better job opportunities. Also, technology skills can help women to startup as entrepreneurs and succeed in running a business. More importantly, acquiring IT skills will help women to have a platform to air their views when it comes to economic decision-making at home and in the family. Because of all these supposed benefits, I decided to run a Foundation for the economic empowerment of women through Information Technology (IT) Education. I have named the foundation HerFirst.

The Solution: HerFirst (http://herfirst.org)?

HerFirst is Foundation designed by me to help women unlock their full potential and participate in economic decision-making in the society. HerFirst will provide IT education and training that will fully equip women participants to contribute to the economic developent of their immediate environment and society at large. Here is what HerFirst hopes to achieve as found in the website:

HerFirst wants to change the plight of women in Africa and the world completely. Through capacity building, business development and funding, we hope to create a platform where women are better equipped to face and overcome economic challenges together. We hope to give women the right tools and environment to facilitate thinking up an idea, developing it into a business and successfully kicking off a profitable venture. Women deserve a voice. Women deserve inclusion. Women deserve economic empowerment and we are happy to work towards these goals!

HerFirst will begin with the following 3 programs:

1. Capacity building: Participants will be given practical training on various IT areas such as Basic computer packages, Digital marketing, Web designing, Content development, and many other skills.

2. Business Development: This program will help the women to understand what is involved in setting up a new business or enhancing an existing one. Some of the skills they will learn here includes how to write a business proposal, conduct feasibility study, identify a business opportunity, and other things.

3. Funding: The foundation will help successful participants source funding to run their business startup. HerFirst will expose its members to the many avenues available to help them with the funds needed to expand an old business or start a new one.

These are just summaries of the 3 main programs the HerFirst will deliver. You can get more details about the HerFirst Programs Here.

Significance of the Foundation Project

HerFirst will aim to train the first 200 participating women in the areas described above and give the the knowledge and skill needed to become economically viable in whatever career they choose. By doing so, gender inequality in our society will be gradually erased and women will contribute meaningfully to the economic development of their society and world at large.

How will 1000 Hive help HerFirst

HerFirst would be a huge project. We will need to procure desktop computer sets and internet facilities, and other computer equipment to run the programs. Right now, as the founder, I am still looking for sponsors to support this project. I have already designed the website and also working to procure a training facility for the program.
I enquired and found out that to register HerFirst as a Foundation and perform other necessary legal requirements will cost 200,000 naira. This is equivalent to $526 by today's exchange rate.

So 1000 Hive is approximately equal to 102,000 Naira in Nigeria. This amount is a little more than the half of the registration and legal fees. So if I have 1000 Hive, then I will use it to begin the process of registering HerFirst as a legal Foundation in Nigeria. I hope to earn 1000 Hive soonest so that HerFirst will take off in no distant time. I have already invested time and some funding into the project and hopes to complete it as more funding comes. So for HerFirst, 1000 Hive will be a terrific amount of support to support the project
