Synopsis
Anila Bose (Shuhashini in the book) gets a letter from her maternal uncle Monmohan Mitra. He’s coming to visit her. Now, this uncle of hers, left home as a teenage boy and that was a few decades ago. They say he became a nomad or a guru of sorts. No one ever heard from him ever since. Now he wants to visit Anila and her husband, live with them for a few days and take off again. The couple is unsure of the true identity of this stranger who claims to be her uncle. What if he is not who he says he is? What if he’s an imposter posing as her uncle to claim a share of her acquired inheritance?
The couple’s son, Satyaki (nicknamed Montu in the book) immediately befriends the stranger. The couple aren’t convinced though, in fact they grow increasingly perturbed and try to fish out the truth.
It is a drama film through and through but there is an undercurrent of mystery around it so I will not reveal the story further in order to avoid spoilers.
The War Within
In ‘The Stranger’, two schools of thought are at war.
On one side, there’s family life. Your family raises you, takes care of you and when the wheel of time turns, you will do the same. Do your duties. Raise your own family. The couple belongs to this school.
Anila’s uncle? He represents the other side. He’s a free soul. Homeless, boundless. He left behind the allure of a secure family life and made the world his domicile, his teacher and his home.
There is a certain magnanimity in living in this way. Resonance of free will. One cannot see the beauty of it through the communal lense. As Monmohan puts it—
“Once someone cuts off his chains, the whole world opens its arms to him. White, black, noble, peasants, civilized , uncivilized—everyone shines to him under the same light.”
In the hindsight, I wonder about our hunter-gatherer ancestors. They didn’t live in one place for long, lived anywhere and everywhere. Is it so unusual that some of that trait would still be around? We do have some nomadic tribes after all.
I’m not saying, let's forget everything and become nomads. That would be unrealistic and bizzare. As Sudhindra assumes about Monmohan—
“What’s the point of living like this? Do you know what I actually think about leaving home? To escape responsibilities. These people are like parasites, always living off other people.”
Sudhindra represents us. His reluctance, hesitation and disapproval anent nomad life are ours as well. And this is quite logical and practical too.
That doesn’t mean we don’t get tempted by or dream about the nomad ways.
Upal Dutt was mesmerizing as Monmohan Mitra in the film. He’s an amazing actor after all. His expressions portray the character as it was intended.
Someday I will see the film once again and will recollect the memories of a lost life I never had.
সত্যজিৎ রায়ের শেষ সিনেমা ‘আগন্তুক’ ওরই লেখা ছোটগল্প ‘অতিথি’ অবলম্বনে নির্মিত। সিনেমা যদিও অনেকদিন আগেই দেখেছি, আজ কী মনে হতে ছোট গল্পটা নেড়ে চেড়ে দেখলাম। গল্পের সাথে সিনেমার মূল পার্থক্যটা শেষের অংশে, তবে তাতে গল্পের খুব একটা হেরফের হয় না।
গল্প
সিনেমায় আনিলা বোস (গল্পে সুহাসিনী) এক চিঠি পায়। তাঁর ছোট মামা, মনমোহন মিত্র আসছে বাড়িতে। সেই পনেরো বছর বয়সে বাড়ি ছেড়েছে, আর ফেরেনি। কয়েক যুগের বেশী সময় ধরে নিরুদ্দেশ। কদিন আনিলার কাছে থেকে আবার বেড়িয়ে পড়বেন। আনিলা আর তাঁর স্বামী, সুধিন্দ্র—দুজনেই আগন্তুকের পরিচয় নিয়ে সন্দিহান। লোকটা কী আদতেই আনিলার মামা? নাকি মামার বেশ ধরে অন্য কেউ এলো সম্পত্তিতে ভাগ বসাতে?
মামা বাড়িতে এলে তৎক্ষণাৎ আনিলা-সুধিন্দ্রের ছেলে সাত্যকির (গল্পে ডাকনাম মন্টু) সাথে জমে গেলো ওর। সাত্যকিকে বিভিন্ন দেশের পয়সা দিলেন, ওর বন্ধুদের মহলে বহু-দেশ জাতির গল্প শোনালেন।
কিন্তু সাত্যকির বাবা-মার সন্দেহ দিনকে বেড়েই চললো। যদিও নির্ভেজাল ড্রামা সিনেমা, তবে একটা চাপা রহস্যের আবহ সিনেমায় টের পাওয়া যায়। তাই আর কথা বাড়ালাম না, পাছে পাঠক স্পয়লারের অভিযোগ করেন। এই গল্প শেষতক কোথা গিয়ে দাঁড়ায়, তা জানতে সিনেমা বা গল্পের নিকট দ্বারস্থ হতে হবে।
অন্তর্নিহিত সংঘর্ষ
আগন্তুকের ভেতরে আসলে দুটো চিন্তাধারার সংঘর্ষ ঘটেছে। প্রথমটা আমাদের চিরচেনা—সংসারধর্ম। পরিবার তোমায় বড় করে তোলে, তুমি পরে পরিবারের দেখাশোনা করো। দায়িত্ব সাধন করো। নিজের পরিবার গড়ো। সুধিন্দ্র আর আনিলা এই চিন্তাধারার প্রতিনিধি।
আর ওর মামা? মনমোহন মিত্র? ও তো মুক্ত পাখি। ঘরছাড়া, বাঁধনহারা। সংসারের মায়া ত্যাগ করে জগতকে বানিয়েছেন ওর ঘর-সংসার-শিক্ষাগুরু। সুনির্মল বসুর কবিতার ভাষায়, ‘বিশ্বজোড়া পাঠশালা’ ওর। এই ধরণের জীবনযাপনে এক ধরণের বিশালতা আছে, মুক্তমনের ঝঙ্কার আছে, যাকে পারিবারিক চোখে দেখা যায় না। মনমোহনের ভাষায়ঃ

চকিতে হান্টার-গ্যাদারার পুর্বপুরুষদের কথা মনে পড়ে গেলো। ওরা তো স্থির ছিলো না। সারাটা জীবন আতি-পাতি ঘুরেছে। যেখানে খুশি থেকেছে। ঐটান যে হাড়ের ভেতর এখনও কারো থাকবে, এ আর অবাক কী? ছোট ছোট ভবঘুরে গোষ্ঠী যে পৃথিবীতে এখন একেবারেই নেই তাও তো নয়।
আমি বলছিনে, সংসার ত্যাগ করে তবে ভবঘুরে হয়ে যাও। সেটা খানিকটা অবাস্তব হবে। সুধিন্দ্র যেমন মনমোহন মিত্রের চরিত্র নিয়ে ধারণা করে—

সুধিন্দ্র আসলে আমাদেরই প্রতিনিধি। ওর সন্দেহ আর ভবঘুরে জীবন নিয়ে অসন্তোষ, অমত এসব আমাদেরই মতামত। আর তাতে যুক্তি আছে বৈকি, সাথে কড়া জীবনবোধ। তাতে অবশ্য ভবঘুরে জীবনের হাতছানিতে বিভোর হতে বাধা নেই কারো।
সিনেমায় উপল দত্ত মামার ভূমিকায় অসামান্য অভিনয় করেছিলেন। তিনি অবশ্য গুণী লোক। তাঁর অভিব্যক্তি মনমোহন মিত্রের রূপ সম্পূর্ণভাবে চিত্রায়িত করেছে।
কোন একদিন আবার সিনেমাটা দেখবো আর এক জীবনের নিরুদ্দেশ নিয়ে কল্পনায় ভাসবো।
