Last year we had the occasion to attend Good Friday services at the Holy Spirit Adoration Convent run by a congregation of nuns called the Pink Sisters. It is a spacious church beautifully landscaped with trees and plants and flowers. While in the parking lot, I saw this magnificent tree with large leaves adorned with flowers and ferns.
This tree is known in the Philippines as “talisay”, the Tropical Almond Tree (Terminalia catappa), a large, deciduous, and spreading tree, reaching around 20 to 25 meters height.
There are orchids hanging from the tree and they are called Dendrobium Parishii. It is a beautiful, tropical orchid from the family Orchidaceae. These plants are sometimes known as “hand orchids” because of the way their canes grow out, resembling fingers. These plants are colorful when they bloom and grow in the form of canes and vines, meaning that they hang down.
Notice also there are ferns on the tree, more notably the staghorn fern, a fern named as such because its leaves form the shape of a stag's horns or antlers. This type of fern is enhanced more if attached to a big tree like this Indian Almond tree because it can really grow very big. Here's a close up of the staghorn fern in case you missed it.
My wife has about 6 or 7 of these staghorn ferns but unfortunately we don't have big trees such as these talisay trees. All we have are small frangipani or temple trees which eventually the staghorn fern will completely cover. In the photo below is one of our temple trees with 2 fully grown staghorn ferns. See how the tree trunk is almost hidden already.
