Earlier this year my daughter visited some historical sites in Koblenz, Germany. Two of these sites had medieval ruins, one of which is a castle found in a small town called Andernach. The other is located in the same town, a little farther up, by the river Rhine. The photo below shows the castle ruins.
This is the Stradtburg Andernach, or the Citadel of Andernach, built in the 12th century and destroyed finally in 1689 during the Palatine War.
The next photo is the ruins found farther up by the river Rhine, still in the same place Andernach.
This used to be a customs bastion, a fortification primarily for tariff purposes rather than military. It is called the Bollwerk. This historic monument was built from 1659 to 1661 and is an important landmark of this town. Today it serves as a memorial for German soldiers who died during the last two world wars.
Another historical site my daughter visited this year was the Colosseum in Rome, Italy. This internationally famous ruins date way back during the height of the Roman Empire in 70 AD. An oval amphitheater, the Colosseum was used as an entertainment venue that hosted gladiator fights or blood sports and spectacles. It is the largest ancient amphitheatre ever built, and is still the largest standing amphitheatre in the world today.
