Hello everyone. We are now in the 86th Edition of this fun challenge, the Photochain Challenge, hosted by @davidesimoncini. The contest post can be found here for those who still do not know about this. Read up and join the fun.

I have often mentioned in my previous posts the empty lot behind our house. It was developed as a subdivision but the owner encountered so many legal problems that it cannot be given a license to operate by the government. It has been on hold for the last 10 years or so. Anyway, the empty lot is practically covered with a certain type of grass that grows so fast that it needs to be cut every 2 months. If not, the grass will grow so tall that it becomes a hazard to the houses that adjoin the lot, like ours. The grass is highly flammable when dry and could cause a fire.

This is called Cogon grass or Imperata cylindrica, a species of perennial rhizomatous grass native to tropical and subtropical Asia, Micronesia, Melanesia, Australia, Africa, and southern Europe. It has also been introduced to Latin America, the Caribbean, and the southeastern United States. It is considered one of the worst invasive species in the world, causing both economic and ecological damages that impact forestry, agriculture, rangeland, and natural ecosystems. And this grass can be found all over our country. It's like everywhere.

But Cogon grass still has some benefits. It is used as a soil binder (to prevent soil erosion), animal feed (only the young grass because the older and bigger ones have silica along it's edges and are very sharp and they can wound the animal), and herbal medicine (it has antibacterial and astringent properties, and can treat skin ailments and wounds gastrointestinal and urinary tract problems).

It has been over a month now since the lot's caretaker has cut down the Cogon grass at the back of our house. It is now getting tall and if he doesn't cut it by next month, the grass will cover our back windows already.

And that's it for this Edition. Keep safe everyone and good luck to all the participants.

I saw many times this type of grass around me, and it wasn't a good moment (I suffer from an allergy to graminaceous grasses). Thanks a lot to join again in the contest. Good Luck Gems 😀 !BEER

Sorry, out of BEER, please retry later...

My son has asthma but luckily his allergens exclude this type of grass, whew. Sorry for the bad times you went through with this grass. I know it can be terrible 😩
