Meet the King of the Road

Jeepneys in the Philippines first hit the roads in the 1950s, refashioned from military vehicles left behind by US soldiers after World War II. Some entrepreneurial Filipinos took those US Jeeps and modified them, adding features to make them roadworthy, and creating a new form of mass transit.

Jeepneys are the Philippines’ most popular form of public transportation. They got their start as Willys Jeeps, thousands of which were left behind when American GIs departed the Philippines at the end of World War II. Filipinos then began recycling them as small buses with bodies made from galvanized or stainless steel, fabric covers instead of side windows, and longitudinally mounted benches with room for 20 (or more) passengers. On top of that, they were ostentatiously painted, making them a rolling street art. Notice the Mercedes Benz logo in the front which is just one of the liberties these jeepney makers take when designing them.

I was riding one today and took a picture of the passengers who were in the jeepney with me.

It's a very cheap way to travel. And it's the most popular. The regular fare is 10 Philippine pesos for the first 5 kilometers (roughly 20 US cents) and an additional peso (2 US cents) for every kilometer in excess of 5. These are available anytime, any day, 24/7. And there's thousands of them! No shortage, except during rush hours when everyone is trying to get a ride. The downside though is you have to share the ride with others as shown in the photo above, and when it rains it gets a bit uncomfortable when the plastic rain shields are rolled down.

I vaguely remember theses Jeeps when I went to the Philippines years ago when I was a kid. I think I might even have a photo in my album somewhere

Really? I didn't know you have been here in our country. That's nice to know. Almost everyone who visits the country have seen a jeepney. They're everywhere. I wouldn't be surprised if you do have a photo of one. Most tourists take a ride in these to experience what it's like. Not really bad if there's not much traffic and no rain 😎

Really cheap, thank you for sharing with us Gems. Welcome to the edition number 100, and I wish you a big good luck :)
