We see every day how technology advances, demolishing myths and truths, I can attest to that monumental advance. When I remember that in my beginnings I worked with a computer manufactured by Burroughs, a company that no longer exists, whose size was so large that it needed a 100 m2 room and floating floor to work together with all its peripherals and that had only 8Kbytes of memory Tears fall, a little from laughter and a little from nostalgia. Today only on my phone I have several million times the processing capacity of that monster.
However, despite all those great achievements and advances whose list would be astonishing but also tedious, we still cannot eliminate the cables. The photograph that accompanies this note is a clear example of my statement.
Yesterday I had to buy a HUB for USB inputs because the two that my notebook has are totally insufficient for the large number of devices that I must connect at some point. Printer, telephone, mouse, keyboard, headphones and several others.
If it is true that many of these devices can work by Bluetooth, even by WIFI but not all and much less simultaneously. I have two printers, a WIFI and a USB, the latter is laser and when I need quality or fast prints I must use it and it connects by cable to one of the two available ports. On the other, I have a device that emits a wireless signal for the keyboard and mouse. If I need to place a Pendrive or an external disk for backup, they must go in one of these positions, the solution was to acquire the HUB because the situation was unsustainable. And the hub device purchased also has a cable.
There are two pressing problems to solve in computing, batteries and cables. Of course, it is a simplification, there are still big problems, including several that are not even presented as such because they belong to a technology that is not yet known, but I am already going around the bush and this is starting to look like a futuristic novel and fantastic in the style of Ray Bradbury.
Returning to reality, it is enough for each of you to observe on your desk, office, or work table the number of cables that hang and you will agree with me, some will be neater than others and will have them hidden but there they are and dominate our life, are cables here to stay? They are ugly, uncomfortable, unsightly, collect dirt and lint, get tangled, cause accidents. You must go, please.
Vemos a diario como la tecnología avanza derribando mitos y verdades, yo puedo dar fe de ese avance monumental. Cuando recuerdo que en mis comienzos trabajé con una computadora fabricada por Burroughs, empresa que ya no existe, cuyo tamaño era tan grande que necesitaba una habitación de 100 m2 y piso flotante para funcionar junto a todos sus periféricos y que tenía tan solo 8Kbytes de memoria, se me caen las lágrimas, un poco por la risa y otro poco por la nostalgia. Hoy en día solo en mi teléfono tengo varios millones de veces la capacidad de procesamiento de aquel monstruo.
Sin embargo pese a todos esos grandes logros y avances cuya lista sería asombrosa pero también tediosa, aun no podemos suprimir los cables. La fotografía que acompaña esta nota es un claro ejemplo de mi afirmación.
En el día de ayer tuve que comprar un HUB para entradas USB porque las dos que tiene mi notebook son totalmente insuficientes para la gran cantidad de dispositivos que debo conectar en algún momento. Impresora, teléfono, mouse, teclado, auriculares y otros varios más.
Si es cierto que muchos de estos dispositivos pueden funcionar por bluetooth, incluso por WIFI pero no todos y mucho menos simultáneamente. Tengo dos impresoras, una WIFI y otro USB, esta última es láser y cuando necesito impresiones de calidad o rápidas debo utilizarla y se conecta por cable a uno de los dos puertos disponibles. En el otro tengo el dispositivo que emite señal inalámbrica para teclado y mouse. Si necesito colocar algún pendrive o un disco externo para backup deben ir en alguno de estos puestos, la solución fue adquirir el HUB porque la situación era insostenible. Y el dispositivo concentrador adquirido también tiene un cable.
Hay dos problemas acuciantes por resolver en la computación, las baterías y los cables. Por supuesto es una simplificación, todavía hay grandes problemas, inclusive varios que ni siquiera se presentan aun como tales porque pertenecen a una tecnología que aún no se conoce, pero ya me estoy yendo por las ramas y esto comienza a parecerse a una novela futurista y fantástica del estilo de Ray Bradbury.
Volviendo a la realidad, basta con que cada uno de Uds. observe en su escritorio, oficina o mesa de trabajo la cantidad de cables que cuelgan y me darán la razón, algunos serán más prolijos que otros y los tendrán disimulados pero allí están y dominan nuestra vida, ¿los cables llegaron para quedarse? Son feos, incómodos, antiestéticos, juntan tierra y pelusa, se enredan, provocan accidentes. Deben irse, por favor.
