For more than 20 years, every summer we go on a trip to Patagonia with my wife. We like that region so much that we prefer it to any other within our country despite the fact that there are very beautiful places to visit, it is not that we despise them, on the contrary, if we had enough time and money we would travel and get to know other places. But when there is only one possibility to vacation throughout the summer, we prefer, as I said before, to travel south and visit that part of the country that we love so much.
It also influences the fact that we have our lifelong friends living in Esquel and we cannot imagine going anywhere without spending at least a couple of days to be with them.
2020 was the exception, for different reasons that are irrelevant we had decided to go in March and the Covid-19 pandemic caught us, the country was completely closed and we had to discard the idea.
This year we have thought about going back, more precisely in the first days of February but there are several things that insist on making us think if we can go or not.
The pandemic is in the now-famous "second wave" here in Argentina and the number of cases and deaths has increased again almost to the same level as last winter, that is a bit scary, mainly because due to our age we are already part of the group of risk and vaccines are still far from being accessible, the only one that has entered the country so far and in ridiculously small quantities is Sputnik V, one designed in Russia but not yet approved to be supplied to people of more 60 years old.
On the other hand, our two pets are an additional problem, Copito, our Shih Tzu puppy was totally blind and needs special care, on the other hand, the cat Clemente has feline immunodeficiency syndrome and also needs special attention. Our children have offered to come daily to attend to them, but we do not know if the number of times they can come is enough for them to be cared for accordingly.
The money needed to travel around the country today is a lot, transportation is very expensive, fuel is very expensive and so are hotels. You have to plan the budget very well, the preliminary calculations scare you.
We are 15 days away from the date chosen to leave and we still doubt the advisability of making the trip, my wife who always goes further in her thoughts is also worried about a total closure as it happened in March 2020, It is very fresh in our memory the hardships of a dear friend who had to stay in Las Grutas, a busy and beautiful resort on the Atlantic coast, and for more than 2 months she could not return to her home.
In this way we are still in limbo and it is something that we do not like, we want to go on vacation, we need it after a very hard year, but many things insist on making the decision difficult. We will see what happens in the next few days.
Desde hace más de 20 años, cada verano realizamos junto a mi esposa un viaje por la Patagonia. Nos gusta tanto esa región que la preferimos a cualquier otra dentro de nuestro país pese a que hay muy bellos lugares que visitar, no es que los despreciemos, por el contrario, si tuviéramos el tiempo y el dinero suficiente recorreríamos y conoceríamos otros lugares. Pero cuando solo existe una sola posibilidad de vacacionar en todo el verano preferimos, como dije ante, viajar hacia el sur y recorrer esa zona del país que queremos tanto.
También influye el hecho de tener a nuestros amigos de toda la vida viviendo en Esquel y no imaginamos ir a otro lado sin pasar al menos un par de días para estar con ellos.
El 2020 fue la excepción, por diferentes razones que no vienen al caso habíamos decidido ir en marzo y nos agarró la pandemia de Covid-19, el país se cerró totalmente y tuvimos que descartar la idea.
Este año hemos pensado en volver, más precisamente en los primeros días de febrero pero hay varias cosas que se empeñan en hacernos pensar si podremos ir o no.
La pandemia está en la ya famosa “segunda ola” aquí en la Argentina y la cantidad de casos y muertes ha vuelto a aumentar casi al mismo nivel del invierno pasado, eso asusta un poco, principalmente porque por nuestra edad ya formamos parte del grupo de riesgo y las vacunas aún están muy lejos de ser accesibles, la única que por ahora ha entrado al país y en cantidades ridículamente pequeñas es la Sputnik V, una diseñada en Rusia pero que todavía no cuenta con la aprobación para ser suministrada a personas de más de 60 años de edad.
Por otra parte nuestras dos mascotas son un problema adicional, Copito, nuestro perrito de raza Shih Tzu quedó totalmente ciego y necesita cuidados especiales, por otra parte el gato Clemente tiene el síndrome de inmunodeficiencia felina y también necesita una atención especial. Nuestros hijos se han ofrecido a venir diariamente para atenderlos pero no sabemos si las veces que puedan venir sea suficiente como para que ellos estén atendidos como corresponde.
El dinero necesario para viajar hoy por el país es mucho, el transporte es muy caro, el combustible es muy caro y los hoteles también. Hay que planificar muy bien el presupuesto que los cálculos preliminares asustan.
Estamos a 15 días de la fecha elegida para salir y todavía dudamos de la conveniencia de hacer el viaje, mi esposa que siempre va más allá en sus pensamientos también está preocupada por si llegara a producirse un cierre total como ya ocurrió en marzo del 2020, está muy fresco en nuestra memoria las penurias de una querida amiga que tuvo que quedarse en Las Grutas, un concurrido y bello balneario de la costa atlántica, y por más de 2 meses no pudo retornar a su domicilio.
De esta manera estamos todavía en el limbo y es algo que no nos gusta, queremos ir de vacaciones, lo necesitamos luego de un año muy duro, pero muchas cosas se empeñan en dificultar la decisión. Veremos que ocurre en los próximos días.
