"A Poinsettia Exercise"

Leading up to Christmas, a popular seasonal decoration is the Poinsettia "flower". Approximately 70 million Poinsettias of many cultivated varieties are sold every year in the U.S. in a six-week period.
The flaming red bracts of the Poinsettia are often mistaken for flower petals because of their groupings and color. In actuality, they are leaves: the colors of the bracts are created through photoperiodism. They require at least fourteen hours of darkness at a time, for 6–8 weeks in a row, in order to change color. The plants also require abundant light during the day for the brightest color.
I'm calling this painting an "exercise", because I looked at the Poinsettia in my living room close up for just a minute and then painted the bracts mostly from memory, with the plant 4 meters away.
In der Vorweihnachtszeit ist der Weihnachtsstern, auch Adventsstern, Christstern oder Poinsettie genannt, eine allseits beliebte saisonale Wohnungsdekoration. Jedes Jahr werden alleine in den USA in einem Zeitraum von sechs Wochen etwa 70 Millionen Weihnachtssterne in vielen kommerziell kultivierten Sorten verkauft.
Die flammend-roten Brakteen des Weihnachtssterns werden aufgrund ihrer Anordnung und Farbe oft mit Blütenblättern verwechselt. In Wirklichkeit handelt es sich jedoch um Blätter: Die Farben der Brakteen entstehen durch Photoperiodismus. Sie benötigen mindestens vierzehn Stunden Dunkelheit am Stück, und zwar 6-8 Wochen hintereinander, um ihre Farbe zu ändern. Die Pflanzen brauchen jedoch tagsüber viel Licht, um ihre volle Farbenpracht zu entfalten.
Ich nenne dieses Bild eine "Übung", weil ich den Weihnachtsstern in meinem Wohnzimmer nur eine Minute lang aus der Nähe betrachtet und dann die Hüllblätter hauptsächlich aus dem Gedächtnis gemalt habe, wobei die Pflanze 4 Meter entfernt stand.
