Curcuma longa - Zingiberaceae (ENG)

Curcuma longa is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Zingiberaceae family. It has a branched, aromatic rhizome of an intense yellow-orange colour, responsible for its medicinal properties.

The leaves are large, lanceolate, while the inflorescence is made up of green bracts with purple shades.

Minimum growing temperature: 10°C
In Italy, it grows well in pots, in a warm, humid environment, with a well-drained substrate and regular irrigation.

The balsamic period is November, when the rhizome reaches its maximum concentration of active ingredients. Harvesting is done by removing the entire root system, which is then washed, briefly boiled, and dried.

Toxicity is low, but the plant requires some precautions:
It interacts with gastroprotective agents (proton pump inhibitors and H2 blockers).
Avoid Curcuma longa supplements during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
If you have gallstones, liver disease, or are undergoing medication, consult a doctor before use.
The absorption of curcumin is increased by piperine and lipids, but any enhancement may cause drug interactions.

Turmeric is traditionally used as:
Choleretic: stimulates gallbladder emptying
Choleretic: increases bile production
Digestive
Antispasmodic
Immunostimulant
Anti-inflammatory
Hepatoprotective

Many of these activities are attributed to curcumin, a phenolic molecule with strong antioxidant properties.

Confirmed Activities
Food (rhizome): recognized as a spice and natural colorant (E100).
Widely studied for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, with growing but not definitive clinical evidence.

Active Ingredients
Turmerone
Atlantone
Curcumin
Diferuloylmethane
Starch

Curcumin is poorly soluble in water, which is why aqueous preparations (infusions) are not effective for extracting it. Piperine from black pepper does not increase its bioavailability by up to 20 times.

Officinal tincture
9 g turmeric
1 g black pepper
100 ml hydroalcoholic solution at 62°
Maceration: 21 days
Shelf life: 3 years
Dosage: 30 drops daily for beneficial effects

The name "turmeric" derives from Kour Koum, which in the Indian language means saffron, hence the nickname "Indian saffron."

It is considered a symbol of prosperity: in India, brides-to-be wear a pendant containing the rhizome as a good luck charm.

Curcuma longa - Zingiberaceae (ITA)

Alimento (rizoma): riconosciuto come spezia e colorante naturale (E100).

Wow!... Awww... I love this one!... We grow it regularly at home and use it for seasoning, and also to make infusions and drink as a refreshing beverage, although I read in your article that it's not very soluble in water 🤔... But it turns out it tastes delicious as a refreshing drink! 😃🙏

Well... you don't get good concentrations of active ingredients in water... but it's definitely a way to enjoy it and absorb its benefits, even if only in a small part :)
