It is true, it is of modern origin and one of the best examples of neo-Romanesque in Madrid, an exponent of that retrospective look at the past that illustrates much of the architecture of the 19th century: the Almudena Cathedral.
However, it could also be said that its origins are, at least, legendary, since in part they date back to the conquest, in the 12th century, of the Muslim Magerit, which was previously the Roman-Visigothic Madritum.
Its location is not accidental either, since it occupies the place that at the time was occupied by a Romanesque church, that of Santa María, a few meters from that old wall where, in a miraculous way, the image of a Black Virgin was found, that of the Almudena, who since then and sharing part of her role with that of Atocha, became the undisputed Patron of Madrid.
It is therefore that of Almudena, a cathedral that contains in its essence, the basic principles of Sacred Geometry, which can be basically summarized in balance, harmony, measure and of course, beauty.
