VIDEO: Liebenburg - Drone Footage from a Day Trip

in Discovery-it3 years ago

Yesterday, after a long time, I took a little road trip despite the shitty weather. Of course, I took my drone along. I visited the Liebenburg in Namborn near St. Wendel (Saarland / Germany) and on the way back I made a short stop at the Vicus Wareswald near Tholey.

The Liebenburg is the ruin of a hilltop castle on the Namborn Schlossberg (castle hill). The castle was built around 1170 by the Counts of Castel to secure their possessions, and was first mentioned in documents in 1218. In 1926, the first uncovering and excavation work took place on the small elliptical castle complex with a size of about 70 by 35 meters. In 1976 the keep above the cistern was rebuilt. Today it serves as a lookout tower.

The Vicus Wareswald is a Roman settlement (vicus) located in the northern Saarland near Tholey. Extensive excavations have been taking place here since 2001 with the aim of clarifying the appearance, structure and chronology of the settlement.

The settlement has its origins in the first half of the 1st century A.D. at the intersection of two heavily frequented Roman roads. One connection ran from Strasbourg via the Roman vicus in Schwarzenacker (City of Homburg) to Trier, the second came from Metz via Dillingen-Pachten, the ancient Contiomagus, through the vicus in the Wareswald to Mainz.

Since the Romans used to settle pretty much everywhere in beautiful Saarland, they pop up in my videos every now and then! Here is a video from 2019:

Glad to see and hear that you got out this weekend. Too bad about the weather but just being able to go exploring is well worth it. Looks like you did get some blue skies and sun in the second video though. Cool drone footage. It looks like the couple on the castle tower actually noticed your drone overhead lol

go exploring is well worth it

Naa, it was raining and storming, with only a few dry minutes in between. The weather turned a half hour into the trip. It was fun anyway though, thanks to the camper. We put a movie on, cooked an early dinner, and pretended to be on vacation :-) I should have built one of those things a long time ago!

I'm glad to hear that you are getting use out of the camper and enjoying it. Sounds awesome. Your weather sounds as frustrating as what we had this weekend. Walk out of the hotel in the morning to blue skies and sun, get in car and drive to our first stop - its overcast, raining and freezing cold wind now. Leave location and drive and it gets sunny. As we approach our next stop it starts raining so we abandon the idea and just continue on home. Immediately it gets sunny 10 minutes past that locations exit... wtf weather!?!?!
Lol

Exactly! WTF (weather to forget)

The view is wonderful, I would love to see the place, thx for sharing the video.

Thank you 😀
