And here comes the February I remember. It's chillier than a brass toilet seat
I broke out the parka this weekend to take the dog out. He's hopping around from foot to foot while he looks for a good spot to go... doesn't take long these days at -20.
I managed to get out of the house as the temp dropped. Lots of things to consider on long hikes on the trails in these temps. Extra water, extra warm clothing, extra gloves, survival blanket and other survival items.
Not so worried about my self as for others. I passed a few people out on the more challenging ridge portion in running shoes and no backpack... one slip and down the ravine they go, no one the wiser. Just seems too easy to simply pack properly and wear the appropriate footwear.
Anyhow... I hit post on this by mistake (@actifit, should add a confirmation dialogue. Hit the post button by mistake instead of adding a picture. Can't edit the post on actifit.io either.) Sigh... anyhow... grabbed a few nice shots too.
A bit of the wildlife - This little Woodpecker happened to land on a nearby tree.
The edge of the ravine might seem enticing for a photo op but the footing can be sketchy and snow can cover gaps that will send you tumbling and out of sight from the trail above. At these temps, it only takes a few minutes to slip into a hypothermic state. Don't let the sun fool you.
Finally on the road home as the sun started to set. The last Kilometer after my 16k ruck through the woods before a nice warm cup of coffee and a cool down.
Stay Safe, Stay warm and keep moving!

Exactly right! I've been feeling that way the last few days. It has been gorgeous and sunny all day with bright sunshine on the snow... and meanwhile it is deadly cold. This weekend we will slip further into the polar vortex for a couple of days and then it should get better.
I agree with you - it doesn't take much just to take some precautions and put on a pack with a thermal blanket and some supplies in case you need it. In those kinds of temperatures, it can be life or death.
