On 01 October 1970 Janis Joplin recorded what would be the last studio song of her career. The song was called "Mercedes Benz" and came about spontaneously a few days earlier when Janis was meeting friends in a bar. Janis got the inspiration for a new song and jotted down some verses of the lyrics on a paper napkin. Later, to everyone's surprise, she decided to improvise on the basis of this initial idea during a live performance. As she liked the result, she went into the studio on 1 October to record it. Three days later Janis Joplin was found dead of a heroin overdose.
The song "Mercedes Benz" was conceived as a criticism of the consumerist society of the time. However, the German car brand took advantage of the myth and legend that Janis Joplin left behind after her death to promote its products. What originally had a specific purpose and message was twisted for their own benefit.
