Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou, bekannt als Vangelis, ist im Alter von 79 Jahren verstorben.
Vangelis ist wahrscheinlich der bekannteste Musiker aus dem Genre der Elektronischen Musik, und wohl auch einer der bekanntesten griechischen Künstler überhaupt.
Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou, known as Vangelis, has passed away at the age of 79.
Vangelis is probably the most well-known musician in the electronic music genre, and probably also one of the most well-known Greek artists.
Vangelis war einer der Pioniere der Elektronischen Musik, und erlangte erste Aufmerksamkeit als Mitglied der griechischen Avantgarde Band "Aphrodite's Child" als diese 1972 ihr Album "666" veröffentlichte. In diesem gab es zwar auch noch viel Rockmusik Elemente, doch schon damals war Vangelis' typischer Synthesizer Sound erkennbar:
Vangelis was one of the pioneers of electronic music and first came to attention as a member of the Greek avant-garde band Aphrodite's Child when they released their 1972 album 666. There were still a lot of rock music elements in this one, but Vangelis' typical synthesizer sound was already recognizable back then:
Schon 1973 begann Vangelis seine Solokarriere im Genre der Elektronischen Musik, und schon von Beginn an mit der Schaffung von Film Soundtracks, einem Spezialgebiet dem er sein Leben lang treu blieb.
In seinem ersten Studio Album "Spiral" ist der typische "Vangelis Sound" schon deutlich: gewaltig, erhebend, wie ein Naturereignis - und dann wieder subtiles Kopfkino:
Vangelis began his solo career in the electronic music genre as early as 1973, and was from the start creating film soundtracks, a specialty to which he remained faithful throughout his life.
In his first studio album "Spiral" the typical "Vangelis Sound" is already clear: powerful, uplifting, like a nature force - and then again subtle head cinema:
Ein wesentlicher Teil seines Schaffen waren immer Film (und auch TV) Soundtracks. Als herausragendes Beispiel wird hierzu meist "Chariots of Fire" genannt, für den Vangelis den Oscar erhielt.
An essential part of his work has always been film (and also TV) soundtracks. "Chariots of Fire" is usually cited as an outstanding example, for which Vangelis received an Oscar.
Ich persönlich halte jedoch seinen Soundtrack zum Film "Blade Runner" (von 1982) für sein wichtigstes Werk - ohne diesen wäre der Film nicht des filmgeschichtliche Meisterwerk, das er ist.
Personally, however, I consider his soundtrack to the film "Blade Runner" (from 1982) to be his most important work - without it the film would not be the cinematic masterpiece it is.

Sein Tod ist ein wirklich schmerzlicher Verlust für die Musikszene. Jedoch wird er - besonders auch wegen der Filmmusiken - unvergessen bleiben. Möge er in Frieden ruhen.
His death is a truly painful loss for the music scene. However, he will remain unforgotten - especially because of the film music. May he rest in peace.
