Hello, internet people! This time I want to present you the new musical and film work of Dimash Qudaibergen. Some of you may already know that a few months ago I became Dear (Dimash's fan) and besides his prodigious voice and quality as a person (something I already talked about in the singer's presentation post) I also love the way he works, his innovation, his way of telling stories and his intention to bring out the best of humanity by transmitting positive or reflective messages.
¡Hola, gente de internet! En esta ocasión quiero presentarles el nuevo trabajo musical y filmográfico de Dimash Qudaibergen. Ya algunos sabrán que hace algunos pocos meses me volví Dear (fan de Dimash) y es que además de su prodigiosa voz y calidad como persona (cosa de la que ya hablé en el post de presentación del cantante) también amo la forma en la que trabaja, su innovación, su forma de contar historias y su intención de sacar lo mejor de la humanidad transmitiendo mensajes positivos o reflexivos.
I present to you The "Story of one Sky". Although I try to break down the music video as I always do, it is so amazing that I have so much to say and at the same time I am at a loss for words. I'll try to start with the music:
Les presento The Story of one Sky. Aunque intento desglosar el video musical como simpre hago, es tan asombroso que tengo tanto para decir y a la vez me quedo sin palabras. Intentaré empezar por la música:
I will start by saying that I recommend using headphones to attend to all the details of the piece. Clearly the music is in minor keys to denote the sadness and melancholy of the lyrics. The melody morphs frequently, subtler, louder, subtler again... all depending on the visual part (almost as if it were a movie soundtrack), hence the great quality of this work.
Empezaré diciendo que les recomiendo usar auriculares para percibir todos los detalles de la pieza. Claramente la música está en tonos menores para denotar la tristeza y melancolía de la letra. La melodía se transforma con frecuencia, más sutil, más fuerte, más sutil de nuevo... todo dependiendo de la parte visual (casi como si fuese la banda sonora de una película), de allí la gran calidad de este trabajo.
The most fascinating thing, as I already mentioned, is how the music accompanies the video perfectly, becoming the soundtrack and how it plays with the ambient sound as well. It's all very well written and perfectly matched with Dimash's voice and what happens in the video (the scenes). It's part Kazakh music, part classical and part contemporary. Because that's Dimash... out of the box and a mix of various styles.
Lo más fascinante y como ya mencioné, es como la música acompaña a la perfección el video, haciéndose banda sonora y como juega con el sonido ambiente también. Está toda muy bien escrita y llevada a la perfección con la voz de Dimash, y lo que pasa en el video (las escenas). Es en parte música Kazaja, clásico y algo de comtemporáneo. Por que así es Dimash... fuera de serie y una mezcla de varios estilos.
Now let's talk about the Kazakh's prodigious voice. Dimash starts the song with a soft and airy voice, as well as imprinting a sobbing effect on the inhale, which makes us believe (unconsciously) that he was crying while performing. Clearly his intention is to tell a really sad story, impressively imprinting that sadness in his voice.
Ahora hablemos de la prodigiosa voz del Kazajo. Dimash empieza la canción con voz suave y aireada, es decir bread voice, además de imprimirle u efecto al inhalar que emula un sollozo, lo que nos hace creer (de manera inconsciente) que estaba llorando al interpretar. Claramente su intención es contar una historia realmente triste, imprimiéndole de forma impresionante esa tristeza en su voz.
Dimash is a baritone, tenor and sopranist, which means that he has an extremely wide vocal range and can sing the same note making it sound totally different, applying different techniques, for example he can make a certain note sound like a falcete without actually doing it, his staccatos are extremely polished as well as his melismas. Dimash on this occasion (and as is his personal trademark) employs various notes, both high and low, various different vocal techniques that enrich the song and help with the ambience he wants to give in his video. In fact, he also does Kazakh chanting (which besides going perfectly with the photography of the video in those scenes) is also a sample of his culture and uses it as a kind of deep lament (lament of pain and disappointment of humanity, but we will talk about that when we talk about the story of the video).
Dimash es barítono, tenor y sopranista, lo que quiere decir que tiene un rango vocal en extremo amplio y puede cantar una misma nota haciendo que suene totalmente diferente, aplicando diferentes técnicas, por ejemplo puede hacer que determinada nota suene como falcete sin hacerlo propiamente, sus estacatos son en extremo pulidos al igual que sus melismas. Dimash en esta ocasión (y como es su sello personal) emplea varias notas, tan altas como bajas, varias técnicas vocales diferentes que enriquecen la canción y ayudan con la ambientación que quiere dar en su video. De hecho, también hace canto Kazajo (que además de ir perfectamente con la fotografía del video en esas escenas) también es una muestra de su cultura y lo emplea como especie de un lamento profundo (lamento de dolor y decepción de la humanidad, pero de eso hablaremos cuando hablemos de la historia del video)
This piece is also the first time we hear him use a new vocal technique: vocal distortion.

If there's one more thing I have to praise about Dimash properly, it's his acting skills which I didn't know about. I mean, acting out a story in a music video is not that demanding as it is a more relaxed job, the difference here is that Dimash made a small film of about 13 minutes and the quality is as such. His acting is a 10, he perfectly knows how to impress his character's feelings to the audience and tell a story without having dialogue (I can't imagine what this guy would do having dialogue to help him with the context, he would be a beast at acting too).
Si hay algo más que tengo que alabar de Dimash propiamente, son sus dotes de actor, las cuales desconocía, es decir, representar una historia en un video musical no es tan exigente, dado a que es un trabajo más relajado, la diferencia aquí es que Dimash hizo una pequeña película de 13 minutos aproximadamente, y la calidad es como tal. Su actuación es de 10, perfectamente sabe como imprimir los sentimientos de su personaje a la audiencia y contar una historia sin tener diálogos (no puedo imaginar lo que haría este muchacho teniendo diálogos que le ayuden con el contexto, seria una bestia también actuando).
The cinematography is beautiful, the colour palette is very well used according to the representation of the scenes, the costumes, the special effects, the scenery... are simply masterpieces and have nothing to envy to a film of the Nazi era.
La fotografía es una belleza, la paleta de colores está muy bien empleada según la representación de las escenas, el vestuario, los efectos especiales, los escenarios... son simplemente de obra maestra y no tiene nada que envidiarle a una película de la época Nazi.
I recommend you watch the video first before reading what follows as I will explain the story in detail in case you didn't understand something (there are things that are not at a glance).
Les recomiendo ver el video primero antes de leer lo que viene a continuación ya que explicaré la historia detalladamente por si no entendieron algo (hay cosas que no están a simple vista)
Let's talk about the most important aspect: the story. Dimash presents us with a social critique of everything that is wrong with humanity with its story and the lyrics of its song. The story starts with a boy who is drowning, so another boy pulls him out of the water and after giving him CPR he reacts. After a while the boy befriends the boy who saved him and also befriends a girl, so he makes a kind of necklace for his saviours with pieces found in a chest.
Hablemos del aspecto más importante: la historia. Dimash nos presenta una crítica social a todo lo que está mal en la humanidad con su historia y la letra de su canción. La historia nos presenta en un inicio a un niño que se está ahogando, así que otro niño lo saca del agua y luego de darle RCP reacciona. Pasado un tiempo el niño se hace amigo del que lo salvó y también se hace amigo de una niña entonces este les hace una especie de collar a sus salvadores con piezas que se encuentra en un cofre.
The story makes a time jump and we are introduced to a military leader talking about the only way is war and so, there are different scenes of a war conflict (quite crude) and it is there where we can see Dimash as one of the soldiers, a bit wounded and emotionally affected, he takes a necklace hanging from his neck and we realise that he is the boy who made the necklaces in the opening scene. Then, the scene shows us a woman who is pregnant and hugs a little girl, the woman is also wearing the necklace that Dimash has (making us understand that this woman is the girl from the beginning).
La historia hace un salto temporal y se nos presenta a un líder militar hablando de que el único camino es la guerra y asímismo hay diferentes escenas de un conflicto bélico (bastante crudas) es ahí donde podemos ver a Dimash como uno de los soldados, un poco herido y afectado emocionalmente, él toma un collar que pende de su cuello y nos damos cuenta de que es el niño que hizo los collares en la escena inicial. Luego, la escena nos enseña a una mujer que está embarazada y abraza a una niña pequeña, la mujer también lleva el collar que tiene Dimash (haciéndonos entender que esa mujer es la niña del principio del video)
So, we clearly understand that once they grew up, Dimash and this woman got married and had a daughter and a baby on the way. The next scene shows how the enemy soldiers manage to enter the shelter where Dimash's wife and daughter are, where the mother is dragged away while the daughter is left behind innocently picking up her stuffed animal.
Entonces, claramente entendemos que una vez que crecieron, Dimash y esta mujer se casaron y tuvieron una hija además de un bebé que viene en camino. La escena siguiente muestra como los soldados enemigos logran ingresar en el refugio donde está la esposa de Dimash y su hija, de fondo se ve como llevan a la madre arrastrada mientras que la hija se queda atrás inocentemente recogiendo su peluche.
A soldier approaches the little girl who can only stare at him. Alternately we are shown two types of scenes, one is of a bunch of people walking through a desert and the other is of Dimash arriving at the shelter where he had left his wife and daughter.
Un soldado se acerca a la pequeña que solo puede quedarse estática mirándolo. Alternativamente nos pasan dos tipos de escenas, una es de un montón de personas caminando por un desierto y la otra es la de Dimash arribando al refugio donde había dejado a su esposa e hija.
As the scenes progress (this is where Dimash does his Kazakh chant) we can see the people walking in the hot sun and in the other scene, the corridor full of bodies, the shot goes from below (to show the bodies) and zooms in on Dimash, whose panicked expression reflects his fear of what might have happened to his family.
A medida que avanzan las escenas (aquí es donde Dimash hace su canto Kazajo) podemos ver a las personas caminando bajo el inclemente sol y en la otra escena, el pasillo repleto de cuerpos, el plano va desde abajo (para presentar a los cuerpos) y va haciendo un close up ascendente hacia Dimash, cuya expresión de pánico refleja el miedo a lo que pudo haberle pasado a su familia.
Then we cut to the most heartbreaking scene. Dimash arrives at the end of the corridor and finds his little girl dead... judge the singer's performance for yourselves:
Entonces transcurrimos a la escena más desgarradora. Dimash llega al final del pasillo y encuentra a su pequeñita muerta... juzguen la actuación del cantante por ustedes mismos:
We are also shown a kind of new shelter where Dimash's wife (who, remember, was pregnant) goes into labour, dying in the process. The newborn is fitted with his mother's necklace.
Así mismo se nos muestra una especie de nuevo refugio en donde la esposa de Dimash (quien recordemos estaba embarazada) tiene su parto, muriendo en el proceso. Al recién nacido le colocan el collar de su madre.
In another scene, we learn that the villain is Dimash's old friend, Dimash, after the death of his little girl and the disappearance of his wife, with nothing to lose, arrives at his old friend's place and, in a rage, kills him, and he also died in the process when the villain's military allies shoot him.
En otra escena, nos enteramos de que el villano, es el antiguo amigo de Dimash, este, tras la muerte de su pequeña y la desaparición de su esposa, sin nada que perder, llega hasta dónde su antiguo amigo, y cargado de ira lo mata, muriendo él en el proceso cuando los militares aliados del villano le disparan.
Then, after a series of flashbacks, we come to the future... the group of people we saw earlier walking through the desert in the face of the inclement, changing weather, are following Dimash, yes, but if we pay attention, it is not the father, but the son, the little boy who was born during the war and is now a harbinger of peace and is therefore followed by people of all races and religions as they all want to live for a better world away from racial, political and religious classifications.
Entonces, tras una serie de escenas de recuerdos, llegamos al futuro... el grupo de gente que vimos anteriormente caminando por el desierto ante la inclemencia del clima cambiante, está siguiendo a Dimash, sí, pero si prestamos atención, no se trata del padre, sino del hijo, aquel pequeño que había nacido durante la guerra y que ahora es precursor de la paz, y por eso es seguido por personas de todas las razas y religiones ya que todos quieren vivir por un mundo mejor lejos de las clasificaciones raciales, políticas y religiosas.
My favourite scenes are the ones that represent the death of the soldier (let's call him the first Dimash) because after the shooting, he "falls" into the water, representing the beginning of the story, where he was drowning like when he was a child, right there we see him screaming underwater (it is when he vocally distorts his voice) in representation of the cries of pain of thousands of people who are trampled by war and who are very often drowned and never heard.
Mis escenas preferidas son las que representan la muerte del soldado (llamémoslo el primer Dimash) ya que luego de la balacera, "cae" al agua, representando el inicio de la historia, donde estaba ahogándose cuando era niño, allí mismo lo vemos gritar bajo el agua (es cuando vocalmente distorsiona su voz) en representación de los gritos de dolor de miles de pueblos pisados por la guerra y que muy a menudo son ahogados y nunca escuchados.
The final message that you see in the photograph is what gives context to the message conveyed in the music video. It is sad to think how musical geniuses as empathetic as Dimash have been humiliated or despised out of envy when their talent seeks to convey such positive messages full of reflection and meaning.
El mensaje final es lo que le da todo el contexto al mensaje que transmite el video musical "Diálogo, comprensión y la promoción de una cultura de tolerancia, aceptación a otros, de vivir juntos en paz, contribuirá significativamente a reducir los problemas políticos, sociales y del entorno que pesan tanto en una buena parte de la humanidad" Es triste pensar como genios musicales y tan empáticos como Dimash han sido humillados o despreciados por envidia cuando con su talento buscan más bien llevar mensajes tan positivos y llenos de reflexión y sentido.
I definitely feel that this kind of work deserves to be more exposed and seen by everyone because of the importance of its message. And well, people, that's all for today's post, I hope you liked it.
