Hi Everyone

This morning I was inspired to create a version of a classic old folk song called "The Wild Rover"

This is a mash up of version's played by The Clancy brothers and The Dubliners as well as a band called Lankum and one line from Bob Dylans Moonshiner "The world is a bottle , life is but a dram but when the bottle is empty ,it aint worth a damn"

So this version is my own unique take on a very old song.I will likely be playing this one until Im old and grey :).

"The Wild Rover"

It's no, nay, never,
No, nay, never, no more
Will I play the wild rover
No, never, no more

I've been a wild rover for many's the year
And I've spent all my money on whiskey and beer.
But now I'm returning with gold in great store
And I never will play the wild rover no more

And it's no, nay, never,
No, nay, never, no more
Will I play the wild rover
No, never, no more

Wild roving give it over
Wild roving give ore
For I never will play
The wild rover no more.

I went into an ale-house I used to frequent
And I told the landlady my money was spent.
I asked her for credit, she answered me nay,
Such "a custom like yours I can have any day

And it's no, nay, never,
No, nay, never, no more
Will I play the wild rover
No, never, no more

Wild roving give it over
Wild roving give ore
For I never will play
The wild rover no more.

I took from my pocket ten sovereigns bright
And the landlady's eyes opened wide with delight.
She said I'd have whiskey and wines of the best
And the words I just spoke they were only in jest.

And it's no, nay, never,
No, nay, never, no more
Will I play the wild rover
No, never, no more

Wild roving give it over
Wild roving give ore
For I never will play
The wild rover no more.

If I had the money
Ive left in your care
Id buy me ten acres
And a familiy rear

It'd build me a cottage
It'd thatch me a barn
It,d but me a goats fur
For to keep my back warm

And it's no, nay, never,
No, nay, never, no more
Will I play the wild rover
No, never, no more

Wild roving give it over
Wild roving give ore
For I never will play
The wild rover no more.

I'll go home to my parents, confess what I've done,
And I'll ask them to pardon their prodigal son.
And when they've caressed me as oft' times before
Then I never will play the wild rover no more

And it's no, nay, never,
No, nay, never, no more
Will I play the wild rover
No, never, no more

Wild roving give it over
Wild roving give ore
For I never will play
The wild rover no more.

The world is a bottle , life is but a dram
But when the bottle is empty ,it aint worth a damn

And it's no, nay, never,
No, nay, never, no more
Will I play the wild rover
No, never, no more

Wild roving give it over
Wild roving give ore
For I never will play
The wild rover no more.

Ah man, that song just creates images in my mind of an Irish (or Scottish?) pub where everybody is singing along to the chorus! Is it actually like that there? Sing for a free drink kind of thing? Hahaha! Your accent definitely adds to my imagination of that image!

I'm trying to think of the closest experience we have to that in South Africa... there have been a few underground clubs I used to visit, where it was heavily encouraged that people should get on stage and jam, even if you'd never met the fellow musicians before. That was a blast!

Ive never been to Ireland , I live in Fife on the east coast of Scotland .I think there are some pubs here that would sing the chorus to this one its pretty well known, there is every chance some old fellas would buy me a drink for playing these old folk songs .In pubs in Ireland id say its more likely. If I ever get rich I will visit Dublin , Im told its as expensive as London and London aint no joke in terms of costliness these days.

Well you need about R17 (South African Rand) to buy a dollar... and the Euros and Pounds are even more, so we really have to fork out to go anywhere - Fife or Dublin!

Greetings brother! What a nice song you played! It conveys a lot of peace, this song is for listening to it at an outdoor campfire in front of the beach, or a campfire in a forest in a cabin maybe, I had never heard the original song, but I'm sure this version is more than great! 🎼🎶🍻🎵👏👏🎉✨🎊🎆💯⭐💥🤩🙌🙏😃🤘

Thanks for this wonderful comment man its really good to know that what I do is appreciated here. This song is fun to sing ,I hope I do get a chance to play it around a campfire someday. The Clancys version is the one that inspired me to learn it but there is a band from Dublin in Ireland that have a great version also .I combined both these versions to make my own unique version :).
