Es probablemente una de las figuras más significativas de la música estadounidense. Considerado un genio con una de las voces más características, Ray Charles ocupa uno de los asientos principales de la historia del Soul.
Muchos de ustedes seguro ya conocen su música, tal vez han escuchado alguna que otra de sus canciones e ignoren que es de él. Con una infancia difícil y una vida no menos complicada, Charles logró construir una de las carreras más exitosas de todos los tiempos.

He is probably one of the most significant figures in American music. Considered a genius with one of the most distinctive voices, Ray Charles occupies one of the main seats in the history of Soul.
Many of you probably already know his music, maybe you have heard one or another of his songs and don't know it's his. With a difficult childhood and a no less complicated life, Charles managed to build one of the most successful careers of all time.
Uno de los puntos destacables de este artista fue su estilo de tocar el piano. Iniciado en la interpretación del Boogie-woogie, supo como tomar la influencia de los artistas contemporáneos, adecuando sus fraseos, acordes y matices al suyo propio. Y fue esta capacidad de asimilar y combinar los distintos géneros que le permitió desarrollar su estilo único.
La canción de la que les hablaré el día de hoy es un buen ejemplo de esto último. Y es que I got a woman es considerada un prototipo de la que se conocería como música Soul.
One of the highlights of this artist was his piano playing style. Initiated in the interpretation of Boogie-woogie, he knew how to take the influence of contemporary artists, adapting their phrases, chords, and nuances to his own. And it was this ability to assimilate and combine different genres that allowed him to develop his unique style.
The song I will talk about today is a good example of the latter. I got a woman is considered a prototype of what would be known as Soul music.
La melodía está “influenciada”- y lo coloco entre comillas porque son extraordinariamente similares- en It must be Jesus de The Southern Tones, una popular canción gospel, género integralmente dedicado a la alabanza a Dios en las iglesias cristianas protestantes de Estados Unidos, que fue oída durante un viaje en auto durante una gira de conciertos. The melody is "influenced" -and I put it in quotation marks because they are extraordinarily similar- in It must be Jesus by The Southern Tones, a popular gospel song, a genre entirely dedicated to the praise of God in Protestant Christian churches in the United States, which was heard during a car trip during a concert tour. From this, Charles and Reinold Richards ended up arranging the music and lyrics in what would become one of the most important singles of his career.
Las disonancias provocadas por los acordes dominantes y las inversiones en el piano le dan ese sonido característico del jazz, así como los “lamentos” (melismas) durante el canto presentes en el blues. Con la combinación de todos estos elementos se da lugar a lo que conocemos como Soul en su forma más básica.
Sin embargo, sigue siendo complicado hacer una clasificación exacta de esta canción, puesto que los elementos presentes en ella son también muy comunes a otro tipo de géneros de la época. Es por ello que si buscamos en Wikipedia, esta nos indicará que el género de la misma es R&B y Soul. Siendo el primero (Rhythm and Blues) un término utilizado para referirse a todo tipo de música de ritmo insistente, movida y urbana. Mientras que el segundo, como una combinación entre el R&B y el gospel.
Como sea, con esta canción y el resto de trabajos subsiguientes de Ray Charles, se sentaron bases muy sólidas para la consolidación del Rock and Roll y el Pop.
The dissonances caused by the dominant chords and the inversions in the piano give it that characteristic sound of jazz, as well as the "laments" (melismas) during the singing present in the blues. With the combination of all these elements, we get what we know as Soul in its most basic form.
However, it is still difficult to make an exact classification of this song, since the elements present in it are also very common to other genres of the time. That is why if we search in Wikipedia, it will indicate that the genre of the song is R&B and Soul. La letra de esta canción es motivo de debate, algunos consideran que va dedicada a una de las esposas del cantante, aunque este tenía fama de mujeriego por lo que también pudiera estar dirigida a alguna de sus amantes. Hay quienes incluso aseguran que se habla de una prostituta, pero no hay constancia de que Charles haya estado en compañía de alguna.
En ella además se puede notar la visión o el estilo de convivencia que existía entre hombres y mujeres por entonces. Siendo uno de los versos de la canción considerado machista, al asegurar que “la mujer pertenece a su casa”.
The lyrics of this song are a matter of debate, some consider that it is dedicated to one of the singer's wives, although he had a reputation as a womanizer, so it could also be addressed to one of his mistresses. There are even those who say that it is about a prostitute, but there is no evidence that Charles has been in the company of any.
In it, we can also notice the vision or the style of coexistence that existed between men and women at that time. Being one of the verses of the song considered sexist, when assuring that "the woman belongs to her house".
