Cuando escuchaba el nombre de Lorde, en mi cabeza solo había dos cosas: Una propaganda promocional del Samsung Galaxy y la parodia de South Park. Y esto es porque siempre creí que Lorde era uno de esos artistas de un solo éxito. Nunca fui, digamos, un seguidor de la cultura pop. A dónde iban y venían los artistas se me escapaba y lo único que lograba reunir, eran esos temas que realmente me resultaban pegadizos.
Royals, por ejemplo, es una de esas canciones que tiene un no sé qué, nuevo y fresco que te aleja un poco de lo cotidiano. Cuando te das la oportunidad de echar un vistazo al movimiento musical por esos años, nos daremos cuenta de que el pop era algo muy distinto a lo que es hoy. Al menos, podríamos decir que se le han sumado unos cuantos matices.

When I heard Lorde's name, there were only two things in my head: a Samsung Galaxy promotional blurb and the South Park parody. And that's because I always thought Lorde was one of those one-hit-wonder artists. I was never, shall we say, a pop culture follower. Where artists came and went was lost on me and the only thing I managed to gather, were those songs that I found really catchy.
Royals, for example, is one of those songs that has something new and fresh about it that takes you away from the everyday. When you get a chance to take a look at the music movement in those years, you'll realize that pop was something very different from what it is today. At least, we could say that a few nuances have been added to it.
Lorde representó más que una canción exitosa en medio del resto y algunos aseguran que fue una especie de punto de inflexión. Su música y estilo abonaron el terreno para muchos de los artistas que hoy dominan las principales listas musicales. Y, sin embargo, no sería ella, a pesar de ser un catalizador importante, quién ocuparía los focos de esta revolución musical.

Lorde represented more than a hit song amidst the rest and some claim she was something of a turning point. Her music and style paved the way for many of the artists who now dominate the major music charts. And yet it would not be her, despite being a major catalyst, who would occupy the spotlight of this musical revolution.
Despite her talent, Lorde has taken her time to share her creations with the world. Without haste or too much fanfare, she has been releasing her music and accumulating a few accolades.
Ahora nos trae Solar Energy. Un sencillo que se aleja un poco de su estilo electro y dream-pop, serio y algo oscuro. Por uno más cálido, alegre y ligero. Con el rasgueo de una guitarra en modo mayor y con las cuerdas silenciadas en un ritmo ligeramente funk, comienza una canción que es como una brisa refrescante en una tarde de verano.
Now she brings us Solar Energy. A single that moves away from his electro and dream-pop style, serious and somewhat dark. For a warmer, livelier, and lighter one. With the strumming of a guitar in major mode and with the strings muted in a slight funk rhythm, begins a song that is like a refreshing breeze on a summer afternoon.
Los arreglos vocales llenan el ambiente con una luminosidad muy agradable. Como si nos sumergimos en las aguas de una playa cristalina y viéramos los rayos del sol atravesar la superficie.
Sin embargo, conserva mucho del estilo melódico de Lorde. Su voz velada y un poco contenida, proyecta cierta dicha y paz. Mientras que en la salida, es potente y brillante como el poder del sol.
The vocal arrangements fill the atmosphere with a very pleasant luminosity. As if we were diving into the waters of a crystal clear beach and watching the sun's rays across the surface.
However, it retains much of Lorde's melodic style. Her veiled and somewhat restrained voice projects a certain bliss and peace. While on the outro, it is potent and bright like the power of the sun.
Un dato curioso que leí cuando estaba haciendo mi investigación, es que Lorde aparentemente sufre de cromestesia y eso me hizo recordar que una profesora muy querida de lenguaje musical me pidió que le asignara un color a cada nota. En ese entonces el Si me sonaba como el amarillo. Y pues, aquí Lorde usa un vestido amarillo. Esto me gustó mucho cuando vi su video, aunque se me hizo un poco raro y no dejaba de pensar en la película Midsommar.
La experiencia de esta canción yo la resumiría como tomarse un jugo de mango bien frío en las orillas de Patanemo. Puede que a partir de ahora escuche con más frecuencia el trabajo de esta chica neozelandesa.
A curious fact I read when I was doing my research is that Lorde apparently suffers from chromaesthesia and that reminded me that a very dear music language teacher asked me to assign a color to each note. At that time, B sounded like yellow to me. And well, here Lorde is wearing a yellow dress. I liked this a lot when I saw her video, although it felt a little weird to me and I kept thinking of the movie Midsommar.
The experience of this song I would sum it up as drinking a cold mango juice on the shores of Patanemo. I may be listening to this New Zealand girl's work more often from now on.
