Con la creación de este tipo de post tenía pensado lograr varias cosas. Desarrollar un criterio para evaluar la música. Conocer y acumular recursos conceptuales que me permitieran descripciones más elocuentes del contenido musical y lírico de la música que analizo. Pero también descubrir nueva música y divertirme, por supuesto.
Por eso me di cuenta de que no podía continuar con el anterior nombre de mis publicaciones (Why I Like This Song), que era demasiado largo y bastante limitante en cuanto a los objetivos anteriores.
Hoy, por ejemplo, vengo a hablarles de un cantante y un género al que no soy aficionado.

With the creation of this type of post, I had several things in mind. To develop a criterion for evaluating music. To know and accumulate conceptual resources that would allow me more eloquent descriptions of the musical and lyrical content of the music I analyze. But also to discover new music and to have fun, of course.
That's why I realized that I could not continue with the previous name of my publications (Why I Like This Song), which was too long and quite limiting in terms of the previous objectives.
Today, for example, I come to tell you about a singer and a genre I am not a fan of.
Bad Bunny es una figura curiosa en el entorno musical contemporáneo. Sea lo que sea que piensen de él y su música, nadie puede negar que es una persona bastante llamativa.
Mi hermano me preguntó sobre cuál creía yo que eran las razones de esto último. Y después de pensarlo un momento, me parece que todo el fenómeno mediático que gira en torno a Bad Bunny está alimentado tanto por las respuestas desproporcionadas de quienes lo aprecian y lo desprecian. Por ejemplo, que lo hayan nombrado como compositor del año hizo rebotar las cabezas de muchas personas, en el buen y el mal sentido.
Bad Bunny is a curious figure in the contemporary music scene. Whatever you may think of him and his music, no one can deny that he is quite a striking individual.
My brother asked me about what I thought were the reasons for the latter. And after a moment's thought, it seems to me that the whole media phenomenon revolving around Bad Bunny is fueled by both the disproportionate responses from those who like and despise him. For example, his being named songwriter of the year bounced a lot of people's heads, in both good and bad ways.
En fin, Yonaguni ha tenido la misma dinámica. Desde sus fans más acérrimos argumentando sobre la genialidad detrás del video musical o la profundidad de la letra de la canción, hasta quienes buscan cada detalle para burlarse.
Leí muchos comentarios cuando esta canción salió. Sobre lo artístico del video, en el que Bad Bunny declaraba su amor por la cultura japonesa, el trasfondo mitológico en las palabras utilizadas, la creatividad vanguardista con su uso del idioma japonés, etc.
Anyway, Yonaguni has had the same dynamic. From his die-hard fans arguing about the genius behind the music video or the depth of the song's lyrics to those looking for every detail to mock.
I read many comments when this song came out. About the artistry of the video, in which Bad Bunny declared his love for Japanese culture, the mythological undertones in the words used, the avant-garde creativity with his use of the Japanese language, and so on.
Musicalmente no encontré nada llamativo o nuevo, es más del mismo Bad Bunny que conozco. Aunque no suelo escuchar su música. Pero sí que tiene una progresión armónica interesante. Para empezar está en modo menor y los cuatro acordes que posee van así:
Musically I didn't find anything striking or new, it's more of the same Bad Bunny I know. I don't usually listen to his music though. But it does have an interesting harmonic progression. For starters, it is in minor mode and the four chords it has gone like this:
Lo que me suena bastante nostálgico y melancólico.
Además tiene cierto aire Lo-Fi que ayuda a incrementar un poco más este ambiente. Pero con el usual Dembow que no falta en el reguetón.

En la letra se describe a una persona que extraña a otra. Mientras que trata de llevar a cabo su rutina, todo lo que hace no le impide pensar en esa persona. Aunque hay un verso completamente anticlimático en medio, creo que el mensaje es completamente claro. Incluye en sí mismo parte de la jerga usualmente utilizada por los cantantes del género urbano, pero sin ser demasiado soez. Únicamente al final, en el “ending”, cuando nuevamente hace mención de la urgencia sexual que acompaña este género, mitigada un poco por el hecho de estar cantando en japonés.
En resumen, es una especie de canción de despecho. Más lenta y calmada de lo que uno esperaría del reguetón, pero supongo que así es como se suele percibir la melancolía en este género.
The lyrics describe a person who misses another person. While trying to go about his routine, everything he does, doesn't stop him from thinking about that person. Although there is a completely anticlimactic verse in the middle, I think the message is completely clear. It includes in itself some of the slang usually used by singers of the urban genre, but without being too foul. Only in the "ending", when it again makes mention of the sexual urgency that accompanies this genre, mitigated a bit by the fact that it is sung in Japanese.
In short, it's a kind of rebound song. Slower and calmer than one would expect from reggaeton, but I guess that's how melancholy is usually perceived in this genre.
Si tuviera que hacer algún comentario sobre el video, es que me llama la atención que hay una intención de hacer referencias japonesas pero con algunos errores o confusiones con otras culturas asiáticas, que hasta este momento no sé si fueron adrede o producto de un verdadero descuido. Como sea, forma parte del vórtice de críticas que tanta luz ponen sobre este tema.
Aun así, las partes que más me gustaron fueron las sucedidas en 2:13 y 2:50. En el primero, vemos cómo el protagonista cae en una ilusión de estar con la persona que tanto extraña. Al recibir el beso, su semblante cambia por completo y baila emocionado ofreciéndole regalos para mantenerla de su lado. Un poco infantil y tierno, debo admitir. Lo segundo es, por supuesto, el ending en japones. La animación está bien hecha y los dibujos son bastantes bonitos.
If I had to comment on the video, it is that it strikes me that there is an intention to make Japanese references but with some mistakes or confusions with other Asian cultures, which until this moment I don't know if they were intentional or a product of real oversight. Anyway, it is part of the vortex of criticisms that put so much light on this single.
Even so, the parts I liked the most were the ones that took place in 2:13 and 2:50. In the first, we see how the protagonist falls into an illusion of being with the person he misses so much. When he receives the kiss, his countenance changes completely and he dances excitedly offering her gifts to keep her by his side. A bit childish and tender, I must admit. The second is, of course, the Japanese ending. The animation is well done and the drawings are quite nice.

¿Es una gran canción? Meh…
¿A mí me gusta? Ni tanto…
¿Se merece tanta atención? No lo sé. Pero es innegable que es muy exitosa en este punto.
¿Gracias a ella muchas personas se acercarán al anime y la cultura japonesa en general? Lo dudo. Pero me gustaría. En ese caso, se lo agradecería.

Is it a great song? Meh...
Do I like it? Not so much...
Does it deserve so much attention? I don't know. But it's undeniable that it's very successful in this.
Will many people get closer to anime and Japanese culture in general because of it? I doubt it. But I would like to. In that case, I would appreciate it.
