Scientific Facts About The Effect Of Music On The Human Brain

in Music3 years ago

Hello my friends! Today I want to talk about the amazing effects of music on the human brain. Music is an essential feature of the human species. almost all cultures have experiences in making music, this has been true throughout history and throughout a person's life we humans sing and become humble.
The human brain and nervous system are built to distinguish music from noise and to respond to rhythms and repetitions, songs and melodies.

Music, like any sound, is heard in the form of sound waves. the outer ear picks up sound waves and carries them to the eardrum. when the waves hit the eardrum, they cause it to vibrate. the vibrations are transmitted along the chain of tiny bones in the middle ear until they reach the third bone, the ligaments, which attach to the cochlea. If the music is powerful enough, it can light up the "reward center" of the brain, just like pleasant stimuli such as alcohol or chocolate.

Although any healthy human brain can do all the complex things needed to understand music, the brains of musicians correspond more precisely to these works. Dr. Oliver Sacks, a leading neurologist and author, discusses this in his book Musicophilia : The effect of playing on the brain has been proven in several ways. Playing music can make you smarter, happier, healthier and even more entrepreneurial at all stages of your life. Music neuroscience is a very specialized field. But music also has a profound effect on many aspects of health, from memory and mood to cardiovascular function and athletic performance.

1 - The effect of music on the mind, What are the psychological effects of music?

The most psychological effect of music is the Mozart effect. researchers at the University of California, Irvine, emphasize that many musicians have unusual mathematical abilities.

They examined how the influence of music on learning and cognitive function in general and spatio-temporal reasoning in particular can be examined.
They In their first study, they asked standardized IQ questions to three groups of college students.
By comparing those who listened to Mozart's 10 minutes of Sonata, they compared one who listened to a bar of relaxation and one who waited in silence. Mozart won and steadily raised test scores.
In the next step, the researchers looked at whether this was the effect of classical music on the brain, or whether any type of music increased mental function. They compared Mozart's music to that of Philip Glass. Again, Mozart seemed to be helping to improve spatial reasoning.

2 . How can music improve cognitive function?

It is not known, but researchers speculate that listening to music helps organize nerve cells in the right half of the cerebral cortex, the part of the brain that performs more complex tasks. According to this structure, music - or at least some forms of music - acts as an "exercise" that warms selected cells in the brain and allows them to process information more efficiently.

3- Music and stress, The effect of music on patients' health

In every period of human history and in every society around the world, music has allowed people to express their feelings and communicate with others. More than expressing emotions, music can change them. As the English playwright William Congro stated in 1697:

Few life events are more stressful than illness and surgery Can music reduce stress in these difficult situations? Several experiments show that it can.

A study in New York examined how music affects the surgical process Forty patients with cataracts with a mean age of 74 years were tested . Half were randomly assigned to receive routine care. Others took the same care but listened to their favorite music through headphones before, immediately and after surgery.

Before the surgery, patients in both groups had similar blood pressure. One week before the operation, the average was 129.82 mm Hg. Moderate blood pressure in both groups increased to 159.92 just before surgery. In both groups, the mean heart rate rose to 17 beats per minute.

But in besieged patients, hypertension remained silent during the operation, While the pressure of those listening to music dropped quickly, they were placed in a recovery room. Where the average reduction was 35 mm Hg (upper limit) and 24 (lower limit). Music listeners also reported feeling more relaxed during the operation.

This music was also tested on surgeons. Preliminary research showed that surgeons showed less stress symptoms and improved their performance while listening to selected music.

4 - Music and mood

Happy music can make people of all ages feel happy, energetic and alert, and music even helps lift the spirits of people with depression.
A credible review of research conducted between 1994 and 1999 reported that in four trials, music therapy reduced depressive symptoms.

A study in 2006 on 60 adults with chronic pain found that music could reduce pain, depression and disability. And meta analysis in 2006, showed that relaxation through music can improve sleep quality in patients with sleep disorders.

5 - The effect of music on memory

Studies on the effect of music on memory have increased since the early twentieth century. Listening to certain music can turn your mind back moment by moment.

A study in 2014 was performed on 89 patients with dementia in which patients and caregivers were exposed to 10 weeks of group music performance. They were also encouraged to sing with the group.

The results showed that compared to routine care, both singing and listening to music improved mood, orientation, and remote episodic memory, and to a lesser extent, improved attention and executive function and general cognition. Singing also improved short-term memory.

I know music makes me happy and maybe it makes me smarter too. I have read the Oliver Sacks book and it details some strange conditions people have such as hearing music all the time in their mind. The brain is such a complex thing.
