Este disco es "Just Another Diamond Day", de Vashti Bunyan.

The spirit of music is discernible through its intentions, in most cases, this is something extremely obvious but some people don't usually stop to think about it. Therefore, tone is always important, how the music unfolds itself. Its intensity, its strenght, its context, its speed, and so on.

A type of music that can hardly be classified as a genre, but that is present in the daily life of many people, at least for a short period of time, are the "lullabies". A lullaby can be anything that soothes you, although traditionally, lullabies are soothing and sweet songs especially composed to put babies to sleep. However, these intentions of "lullabies" are something that is present in many, many other types of music and, in theory, any song that is serene and soothing enough can be considered a personal lullaby.

In my case, I'm a person who listens to a lot of sweet, calming music. And while I could talk for days about the hundreds of records that fit this description, there is one in particular whose influence and classic status are such that I could call it the absolute "lullaby" record. That record is "Just Another Diamond Day" by Vashti Bunyan.

On some idyllic day in 1970, British artist Vashti Bunyan, would arrive at a studio, pull out her guitar and lightly take a seat. She would take a deep breath, with lots of melodies in her head, fables, children's stories and the smell of the countryside. After turning on the microphones, Vashti would display her enormous talent and with her very delicate voice, she would sing and play some of the sweetest and most serene songs ever composed. Vashti, using some traditional nursery rhyme melodies, with her fingers, would play tunes that would lull anyone with a heart.

Unfortunately, the world is not always sane enough or chance simply prefers things not to happen. Vashti became very disheartened after the release of this album. Sales were very few and her career did not have a good outlook ahead. For unknown reasons, it took the world thirty years to realize the enormous value of this album. So "Just another diamond day" would become a cult album and after such a long time, Vashti seeing this, would recover his artistic spirit and return to the music world by re-releasing this album and adding new songs. Besides, he started working on his next album, "Lookaftering", which would be released in 2005.

The sound of Just Another Diamond Day is like a nostalgic dream. If you've ever been one to have trips to country places, especially if these places are related to beautiful memories, Just Another Diamond Day is an album capable of perfectly encapsulating that feeling. This album is a compilation of very sweet songs that are little more than Vashti and her guitar giving us some of the most serene and lovely melodies that can be heard in music in general. All recorded in a very humble way, resulting in a low fidelity sound, but these textures make the music even more tasteful and unique sounding.

Regardless of what Vashti's intention was with this album, what can be discerned is how tender and peaceful his spirit is. With so many short, yet hypnotic songs, it's hard not to fall in love with this woman's music (as long as serene music is your thing). Her fragile, whispery, angelic voice is an ideal antidote. Few albums I recommend as much for serenity as I recommend this one in particular. And if you're left wanting more, there is a compilation released in 2007 entitled "Some Things Just Stick in Your Mind", which contains singles and demos that predate Just Another Diamond Day, but it has the same spirit.

As we grow up, some, in their maturity, believe that they are no longer in a position to enjoy some of the tender things in life. Those things related to innocence, childhood and so on, are abandoned under the weight of responsibilities and problems. However, it is important to have a sanctuary of one's own in which to drain and purify oneself of any evil. In my case, this sanctuary is some albums that I consider my "safe places". Just Another Diamond Day is one of them. And I hope it can be for you too.
