Buenas, Hivers. Me he dado cuenta que escribo muchos artículos con el formato de 3 cosas, pero generalmente suelen ser recomendaciones al aire o con una temática específica en la que se centra dicha publicación. Sin embargo, he notado que hablo más bien poco de lo que me gusta a mí personalmente, aún cuando recomiende cosas que obviamente me gustan, no hablo casi sobre mis favoritos. Por eso, quiero comenzar a hacer algunas publicaciones de ese estilo presentándoles pequeños tops en la misma naturaleza de las demás publicaciones. En esta ocasión, como he estado esta semana escuchando repetidamente los discos de algunas de mis bandas favoritas, quiero presentarles a 3 de ellas, específicamente, a mis tres bandas japonesas favoritas.
Hello, Hivers. I've noticed that I write a lot of articles in the 3 things format, but they usually tend to be on-air recommendations or with a specific theme that said post focuses on. However, I've noticed that I talk rather little about what I personally like, even when I recommend things I obviously like, I talk almost nothing about my favorites. So, I want to start doing some posts in that style by presenting you with little tops in the same nature as the other posts. This time, as I have been repeatedly listening to the albums of some of my favorite bands this week, I want to introduce you to 3 of them, specifically, my three favorite Japanese bands.
3. Melt-Banana
Si algo van a compartir las bandas de esta lista, es que todas son considerablemente ruidosas, Melt-Banana es probablemente la más ruidosa de la lista, y no es para menos. Liderada por Yakuso Onuki, Melt-Banana es una banda fundada en Tokio en 1992, la cual centra su estilo en los géneros del noise rock, punk rock y en sus momentos más intensos, noisecore. La banda está caracterizada por tener un sonido sumamente veloz y enérgicos, esto es especialmente acentuado por las increíbles interpretaciones vocales de Onuki, la cual suele cantar a una velocidad muy alta y su voz aguda y chillona crea un contraste con el ruido general de los instrumentos que hace de Melt-Banana una banda con un sonido sumamente brutal y ruidoso.
Melt-Banana también es una banda sumamente prolífica, han lanzado diez álbumes y 23 EP. Originalmente tenían un sonido de baja fidelidad, lo que les confería aún más fuerza cuando se trata de ruido. Posteriormente, sus últimos discos comenzaron a ser grabados en estudios de mucha mejor calidad y su sonido también comenzó a hacerse cada vez más pop, incluso fundaron su propio sello, llamado "A-ZAP". Sin embargo, siguen siendo una de las bandas más enérgicas y ruidosas del rock japonés.
If there is one thing the bands on this list will share, it is that they are all considerably loud, Melt-Banana is probably the loudest on the list, and no wonder. Led by Yakuso Onuki, Melt-Banana is a band founded in Tokyo in 1992, which focuses its style in the genres of noise rock, punk rock and in its most intense moments, noisecore. The band is characterized by an extremely fast and energetic sound, this is especially accentuated by the incredible vocal performances of Onuki, who usually sings at a very high speed and her high-pitched and screeching voice creates a contrast with the general noise of the instruments that makes Melt-Banana a band with an extremely brutal and noisy sound.
Melt-Banana is also an extremely prolific band, having released ten albums and 23 EPs. Originally they had a lo-fi sound, which made them even more powerful when it came to noise. Later, their latest albums started to be recorded in much better quality studios and their sound also started to become more and more pop, they even founded their own label, called "A-ZAP". However, they are still one of the most energetic and loudest bands in Japanese rock.
A pesar de todo, Melt-Banana es la banda que menos me gusta de esta lista, pero no por nada malo, sencillamente el resto de bandas trasciende el punto al que Melt-Banana llega, el cual de por sí es bastante alto. Melt-Banana tiene algunos de los discos más increíblemente agresivos y enérgicos que he escuchado, algunos de ellos logran darme una inyección de adrenalina increíble y siempre me ponen de buen ánimo. Si tuviera que recomendar algo en particular de su extensa discografía, este sería el álbum "Charlie", lanzado en 1998. Un balance perfecto entre su sonido moderno y el viejo, mezclado con algunos toques de noisecore muy agresivo y una que otra experimentación con las grabaciones. Definitivamente mi álbum favorito de la banda y una montaña rusa.
All in all, Melt-Banana is my least favorite band on this list, but not because of anything bad, it's just that the rest of the bands transcend the point Melt-Banana reaches, which in itself is pretty high. Melt-Banana has some of the most incredibly aggressive and energetic albums I've ever heard, some of them manage to give me an incredible adrenaline rush and always put me in a good mood. If I had to recommend something in particular from their extensive discography, it would be the album "Charlie", released in 1998. A perfect balance between their modern and old sound, mixed with some very aggressive noisecore touches and some experimentation with the recordings. Definitely my favorite album of the band and a roller coaster ride.
2. Kinoko Teikoku
Cambiando bastante el tipo de sonido, esta vez quiero hablar de una banda que todo lo que representa está bastante lejos de la agresividad, es una banda que me eleva, una banda que me hace sentir en otra dimensión y cuyas melodías e instrumentaciones me inspiran y me dan escalofríos. Esa banda es "Kinoko Teikoku", banda de shoegaze y dream pop. Están activos desde el 2007 y tienen en su haber una discografía bastante respetable, poseen 6 álbumes y 2 EP. La banda está liderada por Chiaki Satou, quien también es músico solista. Aunque la trayectoria de la banda sea decente, la verdad es que sus primeros trabajos son los que más resaltan, en sus últimos años, la banda fue perdiendo algo de fuerza y por ende fueron menos relevante en el radar del género que cultivan. Lamentablemente, en el 2019, el bajista de la banda se retiró de la misma, lo cual resultó en la disolución de la misma.
El sonido de Kinoko Teikoku suele ser muy etéreo, al ser shoegaze, el uso de pedales está por todas partes, sin embargo, Kinoko Teikoku suele hacer arreglos de guitarra que acompañan muchas de sus canciones y las dotan de una dulzura enorme. Las interpretaciones vocales de Chiaki siempre son muy enérgicas y apasionadas, al igual que la instrumentación general. Pero lo que más me gusta de su sonido es la capacidad que tienen para crear atmósferas increíbles con los pedales, cosa que se hace especialmente presente en mi álbum favorito de ellos.
Changing the type of sound quite a bit, this time I want to talk about a band that everything it represents is quite far from aggressiveness, it is a band that lifts me up, a band that makes me feel in another dimension and whose melodies and instrumentations inspire me and give me chills. That band is "Kinoko Teikoku", shoegaze and dream pop band. They are active since 2007 and have to their credit a quite respectable discography, they have 6 albums and 2 EPs. The band is led by Chiaki Satou, who is also a solo musician. Although the band's trajectory is decent, the truth is that their early works are the ones that stand out the most, in their later years, the band was losing some strength and thus were less relevant on the radar of the genre they cultivate. Sadly, in 2019, the band's bassist retired from the band, resulting in the band's disbandment.
Kinoko Teikoku's sound tends to be very ethereal, being shoegaze, the use of pedals is all over the place, however, Kinoko Teikoku often has guitar arrangements that accompany many of their songs and endow them with a tremendous sweetness. Chiaki's vocal performances are always very energetic and passionate, as is the overall instrumentation. But what I like most about their sound is the ability they have to create incredible atmospheres with the pedals, something that is especially present in my favorite album of theirs.
Si hay un trabajo de Kinoko Teikoku que recomiende encarecidamente, ese definitivamente es el álbum "Eureka", lanzado en el 2013 y considerado por muchos de los fans como su mejor disco, y no es para menos. Eureka está cargado de todas las dimensiones que hacen a Kinoko Teikoku una gran banda, melodías increíbles, canciones enérgicas, explosiones de nostalgia y pasajes instrumentales tirando al post-rock. En general, Eureka es, en mi opinión, su obra maestra.
If there is a work of Kinoko Teikoku that I highly recommend, that is definitely the album "Eureka", released in 2013 and considered by many fans as their best album, and it is not for less. Eureka is loaded with all the dimensions that make Kinoko Teikoku a great band, incredible melodies, energetic songs, bursts of nostalgia and instrumental passages pulling to post-rock. Overall, Eureka is, in my opinion, their masterpiece.
1. Midori
No es la primera vez que hablo acá sobre esta increíble banda. Y no por nada son mi banda japonesa favorita. No solo tienen ese título en mi corazón, también son mi banda "agresiva" favorita y definitivamente el acto más increíble que jamás ha parido el género del "punk-jazz", esta banda es la legendaria Midori.
Fundados en el 2003, esta banda se centra en el "jazz fusion" y fueron desarrollando con el paso del tiempo el sonido del "punk-jazz". La banda está liderada por Mariko Goto, una excelente vocalista y artista en general, quien siempre tuvo una vida y estado mental aproblemados, lo cual llevó en el futuro a la disolución de la banda.
Poseen un estilo sumamente agresivo y disonante, son histriónicos, enérgicos, subidos de tono y les gusta hacer un contraste entre lo juguetón y lo demencial. Muchas de sus canciones son sumamente agresivas pero tienen un toque de una especie de alegría demente que los dota de una naturaleza circense espectacular.
It's not the first time I talk here about this amazing band. And it's not for nothing that they are my favorite Japanese band. Not only do they have that title in my heart, they are also my favorite "aggressive" band and definitely the most amazing act the "punk-jazz" genre has ever given birth to, this band is the legendary Midori.
Founded in 2003, this band focuses on "jazz fusion" and developed over time the "punk-jazz" sound. The band is led by Mariko Goto, an excellent vocalist and artist in general, who always had a troubled life and mental state, which led in the future to the dissolution of the band.
They have a very aggressive and dissonant style, they are histrionic, energetic, loud and they like to make a contrast between the playful and the insane. Many of their songs are extremely aggressive but have a touch of a kind of demented joy that gives them a spectacular circus nature.
Si hay un álbum que encapsule a la perfección el estilo de Midori, ese álbum definitivamente es "Aratamemashite, Hajimemashite, Midori Desu". Estrenado en el 2008 y con una breve duración de 33min, es un álbum cargado de una cantidad absurda de adrenalina y picardía. Está repleto de momentos en los que jugará con tus expectativas, de por sí, la entrada al disco es como una broma pesada. Escúchalo y sabrás a qué me refiero. Y prepárate para gritos descarnados, guitarras demasiado ruidosas y una batería rápida como el rayo.
If there is one album that perfectly encapsulates Midori's style, that album is definitely "Aratamememashite, Hajimemashite, Midori Desu". Released in 2008 and lasting a brief 33min, it is an album loaded with an absurd amount of adrenaline and mischief. It's packed with moments where it will play with your expectations, in and of itself, the entrance to the album is like a bad joke. Give it a listen and you'll know what I mean. And get ready for gritty screams, overly loud guitars and lightning-fast drums.
