Lee Morgan was an American jazz trumpeter. He is known as one of the most important hard bop musicians of the 1960s. His main influence was trumpeter Clifford Brown, who sadly passed away prematurely. He became famous at a very young age by appearing on great saxophonist John Coltrane’s Blue Train (1958) and recording with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, where he played from 1959 to 1961. He released most of his works as a leader on the Blue Note label, including The Sidewinder (1964), Search for the New Land (1966), Cornbread (1967), Delightfulee (1967), The Gigolo (1968) and The Procrastinator (recorded from 1967 to 1969 and launched in 1978).

Surprisingly, his song “The Sidewinder” was a hit on rhythm and blues and pop charts, became a jazz standard and was used in commercials and television shows. In addition, Morgan collaborated with tenor saxophonists Hank Mobley, Stanley Turrentine, Joe Henderson and Wayne Shorter, trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and drummer Elvin Jones, but died in 1972 at the age of 33 shot dead by his romantic partner.

The theme is played in unison on sax and trumpet, and mimics a woman’s footsteps. Timmons then steps in with slower melodic lines and imaginative ideas, and finally the group re-exposes the theme.
