Those who went to buy Nirvana's third studio album on 21 September 1993 never thought that this would be the last original work released by the most important and transcendent band of the entire decade of the 90's and the Grunge movement. What's more, many were not even aware of the true work of art that this album really is. The return of the band led by Kurt Cobain, who had made possible that rough, dissident, non-conformist sound, and above all possible characteristics; raw and poetic. On the cover, the famous "Angel of In Utero" is inspired by Courtney Love, and her pregnancy, where Frances Bean Cobain, would be the result. Details, emotions, power and above all a lot of talent, this is the essence of this immortal album.
Quienes el 21 de septiembre de 1993 fueron a comprar el tercer álbum de estudio de Nirvana, jamás pensaron que éste sería la última obra editada y original de la banda más importante y trascendente de toda la década de los 90's y del movimiento Grunge. Es más, muchos, ni siquiera eran conscientes de la verdadera obra de arte que, en realidad, es este disco. La vuelta de la banda liderada por Kurt Cobain, que había hecho posible ese sonido áspero, disidente, inconforme y sobre todas las características posible; crudo y poético. En la portada, el famoso "Ángel del In Utero" que está inspirado en Courtney Love, y su estado de embarazo, donde Frances Bean Cobain, sería el resultado. Detalles, emociones, poderío y sobre todo mucho talento, esta es la esencia de este álbum inmortal.
29 years have passed since the release of this album. Almost as long as I can count, and in retrospect, it is impossible not to be moved by the magic and beautiful darkness that can be found within every track on this album. Undoubtedly, from my point of view, this is the band's most mature and artistically creative achievement. Something in which no other Grunge band could match them. It is perhaps for this intangible reason that many people love and mythologise Nirvana. In a way, I understand and even agree with them. They were not only four guys with exceptional talent and anger, but just the right touch of irony, character and bravery: a trait that is only with the greatest in history.
Originally, the album was to be called "I Hate Myself and I Want to Die! It came from a joke that Kurt used to reiterate whenever he was questioned about how he felt or how he was doing, to which he would respond in kind. However, the producers of the album convinced Cobain to modify it into something "shorter" (evidently, it was a euphemism, which really hid the intention of making it more digestible, and therefore more commercial in terms of sales) and it ended up being titled as we know it today: "In Utero". I can't avoid the irony that lies behind things that are apparently simple and straightforward. Such an ordinary act, like naming your album, suddenly becomes a nostalgic omen about an artist (alluding to the first intention of naming the album).
29 años han pasado desde el lanzamiento de este disco. Casi la totalidad de la vida con la que yo cuento, y vistos en retrospectiva, es imposible no conmoverse con la magia y la hermosa oscuridad que dentro de cada tema en este disco podemos encontrar. Sin lugar a dudas, desde mi óptica, esta es la realización con mayor alcance de madurez y creación artística de la banda. Algo en lo que ninguna otra banda de Grunge pudo igualarlos. Es quizá, por esta intangible razón, que muchas personas aman y mitifican a Nirvana. En cierto modo, los comprendo y hasta estoy de acuerdo. No solamente eran 4 sujetos con talento excepcional e ira, sino el toque justo de ironía, carácter y valentía: un rasgo que está únicamente con los más grandes de la historia.
Originalmente, el álbum iba a llamarse "I hate myself and I want to die!". Provenía de una broma que Kurt solía reiterar cada vez que era cuestionado sobre cómo se sentía o cómo estaba, a lo que éste respondía de aquél modo. Sin embargo, los productores del disco convencieron a Cobain de modificarlo hacia algo más "corto" (evidentemente, fue un eufemismo, que realmente escondía la intención de hacerlo más digerible, y por tanto, comercial en cuanto a ventas) y terminó titulándose como hoy lo conocemos: "In Utero". No puedo evitar la ironía que hay detrás de las cosas, aparentemente, simples y sencillas. Un acto tan ordinario, como nombrar a tu álbum, de repente se transforma en una presagio nostálgico sobre un artista (en alusión a la primera intención de nombrar al disco).
Now, just imagine how difficult and challenging it must be to enter a recording studio, just after having created something like "Nevermind". A single song from this album (obviously, I'm referring to "Smells Like Teen Spirit") not only brought Nirvana notoriety and popularity, but defined an entire era of rock and roll. And let's be completely honest and empathetic, it can't be easy to do something right after making the band's multi-award-winning, successful, award-winning and commercially unparalleled second album. In fact, I think this is where it all started to go wrong for this band. It was simply too much stardom for a sad-hearted, introverted guy like Kurt.
Ahora bien, tan solo imaginen lo difícil y desafiante que debe ser entrar a un estudio de grabación, justamente después de haber creado algo como el "Nevermind". Una única canción de este disco, (Obviamente, me refiero a "Smells Like Teen Spirit".) supuso no sólo la notoriedad y popularidad de Nirvana, sino que definió a una era entera del rock and roll. Y es que, seamos completamente honestos y empáticos, no debe ser nada sencillo hacer algo justo después de haber hecho el multipremiado, exitoso, galardonado y comercialmente inigualable segundo disco de la banda. En cierto, creo que aquí fue donde todo se empezó a dañar para esta banda. Sencillamente, fue demasiado estrellato para un corazón triste y un sujeto introvertido, como Kurt.
However, no matter how great "Nevermind" was for Nirvana, it never dampened the creative spirit and sacred fire that underlined the true soul of Cobain and company. In Utero" features Pat Smear, second guitarist and permanent member of the band. As well as the very controversial and fatal tour around the world, where several times Cobain's end was almost consummated, due to the abuse and use of narcotic substances. Although, evidently not everything was so mediocre or negative, but on the contrary, this album is one of the best examples of the Grunge movement for containing the very essence of the style, precisely in the era where MTV imposed trends and made bands change to "sound more" on the channel...
Moreover, "In Utero" represents the greatest demonstration of honesty, musical composition, and is the best reflection of what Cobain really felt since Nirvana stole the world spotlight. A confused, addicted guy with a totally special sensibility. The raging fire that was still burning but, even in the face of all the recognition and admiration of the world, it simply wasn't enough; it wasn't enough. In this sense, it is a completely autobiographical realisation. Frances, his youngest daughter, is also present, and if you look closely at the track (France Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle), it is easy to assume that it is a wish of the father projected onto his daughter, towards the city that hurt Cobain so much.
No obstante, sin importar lo grandioso que haya sido el "Nevermind" para Nirvana, ésto jamás amilanó los ánimos creativos y ese fuego sagrado que destacó la verdadera alma de Cobain y compañía. En "In Utero" hace su presentación Pat Smear, segunda guitarra y miembro permanente de la banda. Al igual, que la muy polémica y fatal gira alrededor del mundo, donde varias veces el fin de Cobain estuvo a punto de consumarse, debido al abuso y uso de sustancias narcóticas. Aunque, evidentemente no todo fue tan mediocre o negativo, sino al contrario, este álbum es uno de los mejores ejemplares del movimiento Grunge por contener la esencia mismo del estilo, justamente en la era donde MTV imponía tendencias y hacía que las bandas cambiaran para "sonar más" en el canal...
Además, "In Utero" representa la mayor demostración de honestidad, composición musical, y es el mejor reflejo de lo que Cobain realmente sentía desde que Nirvana se robó los reflectores mundiales. Un sujeto confundido, adicto, con una sensibilidad totalmente especial. El fuego iracundo que aún seguía ardiendo pero que, aún ante todo el reconocimiento y admiración del mundo, sencillamente no era suficiente; no bastaba. En este sentido, es una realización completamente autobiográfica. Frances, su hija pequeña, también está presente y si se fijan bien en el tema (France Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle), no cuesta demasiado suponer que es un deseo del padre proyectado en su hija, hacia la ciudad que tanto daño le hizo a Cobain.
Once again, listening to this album is a gigantic test of nostalgia and empathy for a soul that seemed to be slowly growing tired, to simply stop burning, definitively. If what I say is not so, then how to explain "Heart Shaped Box"? It is the most famous single from this album, and the one that broke multiple records for views at the time. A guttural poem recited with a certain choleric appeal to Cobain's own frustration at not being fully understood (perhaps even a shriek at Courtney, his wife at the time and mother of his only daughter). Anguish is the hallmark of this album: "Serve The Servants" is track number one, and is a straightforward anecdote from Kurt's young life.
Una vez más, escuchar este álbum es una prueba gigantesca de nostalgia y de empatía hacia un alma que parecía que poco a poco estaba llegando a cansarse, a sencillamente dejar de arder, definitivamente. Si lo que digo no es así, entonces, ¿cómo explicar "Heart Shaped Box"? Es el sencillo más famoso de este álbum, y el que rompió múltiples récords de visualizaciones para la época. Un poema gutural recitado con cierto llamado colérico hacia la propia frustración que sentía Cobain por no lograr ser comprendido del todo (quizá, incluso, un alarido reclamo hacia Courtney, su esposa en ese momento y madre de su única hija). La angustia, es la característica de este álbum: "Serve The Servants" es la pista número uno, y directamente es una anécdota de la vida de joven de Kurt.
"Rape Me", which is the most controversial lyric on this album, is not a misogynistic track as many people think it is, it is just a representation of the vulnerability Cobain felt in the face of the stardom he couldn't quite digest. There are rockstars who seem to melt with the fame and the spectacle, and others who simply find it excessive, intrusive and completely negative. Cobain was always a tremendously flawed guy, but when it came to sound, he transformed himself. If he had a sound in his mind, it definitely had to come true in real life. And that's what ended up happening with "In Utero". Due to the undisputed success of "Nevermind", Kurt and the other members felt that they were due an album that was not so polished and linear, but more sincere and completely similar in sound to what you would normally hear at a concert.
This is why Nirvana's three albums are so antagonistic to each other: "Bleach"; the debut album is pure adolescent rage and mortification to the max. "Nevermind" is the reflection and transition from adolescence to adulthood, and thirdly, "In Utero" is the pinnacle of creative maturity: the true reflection of the sound that could and did make a real revolution. In such a way, that Nirvana, even without ever really meaning to, transformed what radio stations had as a successful rock band, and it captured the minds of billions of young people all over the world, not just in the United States.
"Rape Me", que es la letra más polémica de este álbum, no es un tema misógino como muchas personas creen que es, es tan solo la representación de la vulnerabilidad que sentía Cobain ante el estrellado que no terminaba de digerir. Hay rockstars que parecen fundirse con la fama y el espectáculo, y otros que sencillamente lo hallan excesivo, intrusivo y completamente negativo. Cobain, siempre fue un sujeto tremendamente imperfecto pero en cuanto a sonido, se transformaba. Si tenía un sonido en su mente, definitivamente tenía que volverse realidad en la vida real. Y esto fue lo que terminó pasando con "In Utero". Debido al éxito incontestable del "Nevermind", Kurt y los otros miembros, sentía que se debían un álbum no tan pulido ni lineal, sino más sincero y con un sonido completamente similar a lo que normalmente se oiría en un concierto.
Por esta razón, los tres discos de Nirvana son tan antagónicos entre sí. "Bleach"; el álbum debut es pura ira y mortificación adolescente a más no poder. "Nevermind" es el reflejo y la transición que hay desde toda adolescencia hacia la etapa adulta, y en tercer lugar; "In Utero" es la cúspide del apogeo dentro de la madurez creativa: el reflejo real del sonido que pudo e hizo una verdadera revolución. De tal modo, que Nirvana, aún sin jamás quererlo realmente transformó lo que las radios tenían como una banda de rock exitosa, y sugestionó las mentes de miles de millones de jóvenes en todo el mundo, no solamente en los Estados Unidos.
Personally, I consider "In Utero" to be Nirvana's most complete, substantial and faithful album. It is, in my opinion, the culmination of the sound and lyrics that Cobain really wanted to achieve, as well as being one of the best examples of rebelliousness and talent of the entire decade of the 90s. Likewise, I couldn't end these lines without emphasising that this, too, is a cult album. That is to say, it is one of those musical works that will live forever surrounded by an aura of mysticism, abundant nostalgia and admiration. In all this, I would like to mention the beauty of its cover and the repertoire of songs. "Milk It", "Very Ape", "All Apologies", "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter", and "Scentless Apprentice", are just some of the incredible works that are there, for posterity and the admiration of any ear that wishes to marvel. Nirvana is a luxury, and "In Utero" is manna from heaven.
Personalmente, yo considero a "In Utero" el álbum más completo, sustancial y fiel de Nirvana. Es, a mí modo de ver, la culminación del sonido y las letras que realmente quería conseguir Cobain, además de ser uno de los mejores ejemplos de rebeldía y talento de toda la década de los 90's. Asimismo, no podía culminar estas líneas sin hacer énfasis en que éste, también, es un álbum de culto. Es decir, es una de esas obras musicales que vivirá para siempre rodeada de un aura de misticismo, abundante nostalgia y admiración. A todo esto, quiero hacer mención a la belleza de su portada y al repertorio de temas. "Milk It", "Very Ape", "All Apologies", " Radio Friendly Unit Shifter", y "Scentless Apprentice", son tan solo alguna de las obras increíbles que están ahí, para la posteridad y la admiración de cualquier oído que desee maravillarse. Nirvana es un lujo, e "In Utero", maná del cielo.
