Mafalda is the icon of our region, of Latin America. A subcontinent in itself, but also a vast region full of Hispanic heritage. This cartoon was born during the 60's in the midst of a plague of dictatorships in the continent. It was the response of its creator, one of the great artists of his time, to the autocratic, ruthless and cruel authority that ruled in Argentina. She, Mafalda, is a symbol but she loves the Beatles.
Mafalda es el ícono de nuestra región, de Latinoamérica. Un subcontinente en sí mismo, pero también una basta región llena de herencia hispana. Esta historieta tuvo su nacimiento durante la década de los 60's en plena plaga de dictaduras en el continente. Fue la respuesta de su creador, que por si fuera poco es uno de los grandes artistas de su tiempo, para con la autoridad autocrática, despiadada y cruel que regía en la Argentina. Ella, Mafalda, es un símbolo pero que ama a los Beatles.
This relationship of eternal admiration between them is a perfect catalyst "Why? Simple, it is because it is love and the most genuine admiration that unites these two elements. A fictional girl with the greatest band of all time, and one of the revelations in terms of musical and artistic contemporaneity. This is how, as I myself was able to see, in an exhibition in honour of the rebellious girl in this post, how, although I didn't expect it; the Beatles and their legacy are always there.
Now, to get a good idea of how these two characters blend together, you only have to look at the photos. During my visit to the Museum of Culture in Valencia, Venezuela; right next to the city where I live (San Diego, Carabobo) I saw how half of an exhibition hall was filled only with the influence of the album "Rubber Soul" by the Fab Four from Liverpool. I confess, I also felt a bit of frustration.... Most people who were photographing, didn't have much idea of what they were seeing or why these elements were right in front of their noses.
Esta relación de eterna admiración entre ambos es un catalizador perfecto "¿Por qué?" Dirán algunos... Sencillo, es debido a que es el amor y la más genuina admiración la que une a estos dos elementos. A una niña ficticia con la banda más grande de todos los tiempos, y una de las revelaciones en cuanto a contemporaneidad musical y artística. Es así, como yo mismo pude ver, en una exposición en honor a la nena rebelde de este post, cómo, aunque no lo esperaba; los Beatles y su legado siempre están.
Ahora bien, para saber bien cómo estos dos personajes se mezclan, sólo basta con mirar las fotos. Durante mi visita al Museo de la Cultura de Valencia, Venezuela; justo al lado de la ciudad en la cual resido (San Diego, Carabobo) vi cómo la mitad de una sala de exposición estaba abarrotada sólo con la influencia del álbum "Rubber Soul" de los Fab Four de Liverpool. Confieso, que también sentí un poco de frustración... La mayoría de personas que estaban fotografiando, no tenían demasiada idea de lo que veían o por qué estaban esos elementos justo al frente de sus narices.
In this sense, I was struck by the way in which the admiration-love relationship between Mafalda and the Beatles was palpable. And let me explain, she, this revolutionary and brilliant child, always found peace, calm, tranquillity and love in the artistic and musical material that Paul, John, Ringo and George provided for the whole world. There were two things that characterised Mafalda's unwavering and stubborn character; her disdain for soup and her devotion to this English band.
En este sentido, me quedé abismado por la manera en cómo la relación de admiración-amor entre Mafalda y los Beatles era palpable. Y les explico, ella, esta niña revolucionaria y brillante, siempre hallo paz, calma, sosiego y amor en el material artístico y musical que brindaron Paul, John, Ringo y George para el mundo entero. Había dos cosas que caracterizaban el carácter irrenunciable y testarudo de Mafalda; su desprecio por la sopa y su devoción por esta banda inglesa.
On the other hand, let us never forget that it was not always socially accepted to be a fan of this band. In fact, there was a time, not well remembered by many, when openly declaring oneself a Beatles fan or follower was highly frowned upon. These guys defied (with masterful use of irony) Jesus, went to India and reconnected with each other, popularised the use of certain substances, but above all they were the flag (at the end of the band's career) of a movement that defied the establishment with only love and understanding.
A behaviour, which as you well know, was the opposite of what was accepted from the logic of that historical time. And since Mafalda is the representation of critical thinking, of subversive struggle and above all of the use of the mind to break schemes, how could it be possible for her not to love the most transcendental band ever seen? Simply impossible. And this common-sense approach of its author, Quino, is something precious, necessary and extremely undervalued. Let's remember, we are, to a great extent, the representation of our historical time...
Por otro lado, no olvidemos nunca, que no siempre fue aceptado socialmente ser fanático de esta banda. De hecho, hubo un tiempo, no muy recordado por muchos, donde declararse abiertamente seguidor o fanático de los Beatles era sumamente mal visto. Estos chicos desafiaron (con uso magistral de la ironía= a Jesús, se fueron a la India y reconectarse entre ellos mismo, popularizaron el uso de ciertas sustancias, pero sobre todo fueron la bandera (al final de la carrera de la banda) de un movimiento que desafiaba lo establecido con únicamente amor y entendimiento.
Una conducta, que como bien saben, era lo opuesto a lo que era aceptado desde la lógica de aquél tiempo histórico. Y ya que Mafalda es la representación del pensamiento crítico, de la lucha subversiva y sobre todo del uso de la mente para romper esquemas, ¿cómo iba a ser posible que no amara a la banda más trascendental jamás vista? Sencillamente, imposible. Y éste acierto, en cuanto al sentido común, de su autor: Quino, es algo precioso, necesario y sumamente infravalorado. Recordemos, somos en gran medida, la representación de nuestro tiempo histórico...
And the link between the utopian, rebellious and rebellious girl who is represented in cartoons like Mafalda and the most extraordinary, creative and influential artists of the last 60 years is no coincidence. Who would have thought? Beatles and Mafalda, just and necessary.
Y es que el vínculo entre la niña utópica, rebelde y frontal que es representada en viñetas como Mafalda y los artistas más extraordinarios, creativos e influyentes de los últimos 60 años, no es casualidad. La inspiración para el artista original, Quino, vino precisamente de ser él mismo un ferviente seguidor y admirador de los chicos de Liverpool. Consciente de cómo eran vistos en la sociedad y del mensaje que éstos pregonaban, armó a su personaje de ese mismo valor humano y con la actitud rebelde ante los hechos que sacudieron su época.
Finalmente, el desafío de esta tira de cómic, es haber sido una de las primeras o la primera en la región; no olvidemos que el contexto geográfico de todo esto es Latinoamérica... Dicho esto, fue una pionera en coger inspiración de los 4 sujetos más grandes de la historia de la música contemporánea. Supo hallar valor, fe y devoción para poder desarrollar su faceta más analítica, y por tanto, subversiva; además, por si fuera poco, con el paso de los años todos y cada uno de las personas que han vivido desde los 60's para acá, no hacemos otra cosa más que admirarla ¿Quién lo diría? Beatles y Mafalda, justos y necesarios.

Oye este post me ha gustado mucho. Saber un poco más sobre esta traviesa niña ya su vez recordarla ha sido bastante nostálgico. Además, la exhibición se ve que estuvo muy buena porque las fotos te han quedado estupendas. Definitivamente, los ¨the beatles¨ siempre causaron estragos entre su maravilloso arte. Todavía hoy siguen siendo influencias para muchos artistas. Te felicito, esto ha sido una muy buena combinación de historia.
Gracias, querido @edwardstobia. Siempre hay cierta nostalgia sobre Mafalda. En sí, su auge fue hace más de 5 décadas atrás en el tiempo. Lo curioso, es que destacó más por las tiras cómicas que por la serie animada en sí. Aunque, el vínculo que la une con los Fab Four es sólido y trascendental. Quizá, como el mensaje mismo que ella y sus amigos, intentaron promover durante una época convulsa en la región.

Me encanta demasiado este post, no conocía mucho la historia de Mafalda, aunque de por sí siempre me ha parecido bastante interesante el mensaje que ha tenido y que ha logrado perdurar aún con el pasar de los años, y no conocía siquiera que existía esta curiosa conexión entre Mafalda y los Beatles jajjajaja
