Los Ramones fueron una banda estadounidense de punk que surgió durante la gran explosión de este género en la década de los ´70. Si bien son reconocidos por la corta duración de sus canciones, las cuales en su mayoría duran entre 2 y 3 minutos, y por sus letras sencillas y sin grandes pretensiones ni significados, hay una canción en particular, que aunque es muy simple y directa, describe un acontecimiento en particular que marcó un antes y un después tanto en la banda como entre dos de sus integrantes, esa canción es por supuesto El KKK se llevó a mi chica.
The Ramones were a punk band from the USA that emerged during the great explosion of this genre in the 1970s. Although they are recognized for their short songs, which mostly last between 2 and 3 minutes, and for their simple lyrics without great pretensions or meanings, there is a song in particular that, although it is very simple and direct, describes an event that marked a before and after both in the band and between two of its members, that song is of course The KKK took my baby away.
El KKK se llevó a mi chica forma parte del sexto disco de la banda de Nueva York llamado Pleasant Dreams, grabado entre Marzo y Abril de 1981 y publicado el 20 de Julio del mismo año, bajo el sello Sire Records, es la tercera canción del disco producido por Grahan Gouldman y fue el segundo sencillo promocional del álbum. Sólo dura 2:32 minutos. Pleasant Dreams alcanzó el puesto N° 58 en las listas de Billboard de Estados Unidos de 1981 a pesar de que fue considerado un fiasco comercial tanto en su país como en el Reino Unido. Irónicamente, el aire que se respiraba en la banda no era como para tener sueños placenteros.
The KKK took my baby away is part of the sixth album of the New York band called Pleasant Dreams, recorded between March and April 1981 and published on July 29 of the same year, under the Sire Records label, it´s the third song on the disc produced by Graham Gouldman and was the second promotional single from the album. It only lasts 2:32 minutes. Pleasant Dreams reached #58 on the 1981 US Billboard charts despite being considered a commercial flop in both the US and the UK. Ironically, the atmosphere in the band wasn´t like to have pleasant dreams.
Cualquiera que lea el título de esta canción pensará que lo hicieron a modo de broma o como una manera de llamar la atención tomando en cuenta que el punk siempre busca escandalizar y generar controversia porque esa es su esencia, o al menos lo era en esa época, ser una música subversiva. Si bien Los Ramones eran una banda punk, sus letras estaban más enfocadas en la diversión, el alienamiento de la juventud, los problemas, el amor, las drogas y el alcohol, etc. y aunque puede que sus letras, en apariencia sean algo estúpidas, la verdad es que en el fondo llegan a ser inteligentes por la manera tan particular de abordar las situaciones más desalentadoras con un gran sentido del humor. En cuanto a esto, Joey Ramone decía: "Son canciones que la gente puede entender, tratan sobre cosas que afectan a su vida diaria. Era mejor cantar sobre eso que sobre algo que nadie comprende, como Pink Floyd y otras bandas de la época, que hacían letras sobre la luna, Venus y cosas así. ¿Quién coño puede sentirse identificado con canciones de ese tipo? Las mías hablan de temas que tienen que ver con mis propios sentimientos y lo que me es próximo". Mediados de la década de los 70, ciudad de Nueva York, un club recién inaugurado en Manhattan llamado CBGB se está convirtiendo en uno de los centros de reunión más importantes para las bandas emergentes de la escena punk y new wave. Una de esas bandas son los Ramones, procedentes del barrio de Queens, son toda una novedad con su música sencilla de veloces riffs. Su imagen es muy particular, todos visten igual, pantalones tubo, franelas y chaquetas de cuero, tienen el mismo corte de cabello y hasta se han cambiado sus apellidos a Ramone como muestra de hermandad. Las letras de sus canciones son entre divertidas y deprimentes, lo que hace que el público se identifique con ellos rápidamente. Esta banda está formada por Joey Ramone en la voz, Johnny Ramone en la guitarra, Dee Dee Ramone en el bajo y Tommy Ramone en la batería.
Mid-1970s New York City, a newly opened club in Manhattan called CBGB is becoming one of the most important gathering places for emerging bands from the punk and new wave scene. One of those bands is the Ramones, from the neighborhood of Queens, they are quite a novelty with their simple music with fast riffs. Their image is very particular, they all dress the same, tube pants, flannels and leather jackets, they have the same haircut and they have even changed their last names to Ramone as a sign of brotherhood. The lyrics of their songs are between funny and depressing, which makes the public identify with them quickly. The band is, Joey Ramone on vocals, Johnny Ramone on guitar, Dee Dee Ramone on bass, and Tommy Ramone on drums.

Young people of all styles and ages attend CBGB, it´s the perfect epicenter to see live bands, have fun and get girls and boys, as well as being able to experiment with different types of illegal substances that run through its small and dirty space, call them alcohol or drugs. A 16-year-old girl somehow manages to fool security and illegally enters the club, attracted by the sound of the band that was playing at the time. Her name, Linda Danielle. A man almost two meters tall, very thin, with a strange haircut and an unattractive face powerfully draws her attention, it´s none other than the singer of the band that minutes ago had made her want to enter the club, Joey Ramone. A few years later, in 1979, she manages to approach the singer during the filming of Rock 'n' Roll High School, a documentary about the Ramones, and love is born between them. Linda and Joey strike up a relationship and the girl begins touring with the band and experiencing its burgeoning success and popularity.
Joey Ramone, cuyo nombre real era Jeffrey Hyman, no había tenido una adolescencia muy feliz, sus padres se divorciaron siendo niño y de adolescente su madre lo expulsó de casa debido a su nulo interés por trabajar, estudiar o hacer algo productivo, viéndose obligado a dormir en el piso de la galería de arte que ella tenía y luego en casa de una amiga. A los 18 años se internó voluntariamente en una institución psiquiátrica para tratar su trastorno obsesivo compulsivo. Joey era un tipo muy reservado, tímido y vulnerable, era muy sensible y era un romántico empedernido. Físicamente era torpe, frágil y sufría una severa miopía que lo obligaba a usar unas gruesas gafas.
Joey Ramone, whose real name was Jeffrey Hyman, had not had a very happy adolescence, his parents divorced when he was a child and as a teenager his mother kicked him out of the house due to his lack of interest in working, studying or doing something productive, being forced to sleep on the floor of the art gallery she had and then at a friend's house. At the age of 18, he voluntarily committed himself to a psychiatric institution to treat his obsessive-compulsive disorder. Joey was a very introvert, shy and vulnerable guy, he was very sensitive and he was a hopeless romantic. He was physically clumsy, frail and suffered from severe myopia that forced him to wear thick glasses.
La música parecía ser lo único en lo que podría encajar y ser alguien y gracias a su amor por bandas como los Beatles, los Who, T.Rex, Slade y los Stooges, se unió a un grupo de glam llamado Sniper, donde aunque lo que le gustaba era la batería, lo pusieron a cantar. Joey empezó a usar atuendos femeninos como escarchas, guantes y joyas, mas unas enormes plataformas rosadas que cuando salía en escena, lo hacían ver más gigante, más extraño y más bizarro de lo que ya era. Sólo duró una semana en esta banda ya que lo echaron, según sus propias palabras, "por feo".
Music seemed to be the only thing he could fit in and be someone and thanks to his love for bands like the Beatles, the Who, T.Rex, Slade and the Stooges, he joined a glam group called Sniper, where although what he liked was the drums, they made him sing. Joey started wearing girly outfits like glitter, gloves, and jewelry, plus huge pink platforms that made him look bigger, weirder, and more bizarre when he walked onstage than he already was. He only lasted a week in this band as he was kicked out "because he was ugly", in his own words.
A pesar de su extraña imagen y su desgarbado y larguirucho cuerpo, su puesta en escena era única y original, no copiaba a nadie y sus particulares movimientos inestables, que hacían pensar que en cualquier momento se iba a caer, llamaron la atención de Johnny y Dee Dee y sin dudar lo invitaron a unirse a la banda que planeaban formar. Johnny en la guitarra, Dee Dee cantaba y tocaba la otra guitarra y Joey se iba a encargar de la batería, los ensayos eran un desastre total, aquello sonaba horrible. Afortunadamente para el rock, Dee Dee era incapaz de hacer las dos cosas juntas mientras que la altura de Joey resultó ser un verdadero problema para poder tocar el instrumento. Durante su primer concierto, y luego de no poder seguir con la batería el desenfrenado ritmo de Dee Dee y Johnny, su manager, Tommy sugirió hacer unos cambios, poner a Dee Dee en el bajo, Johnny seguiría en la guitarra, y Joey sería de ahora en adelante el cantante, a falta de candidatos que ocupasen la batería, la banda le dijo a Tommy que tomara el puesto y este aceptó sin tener ningún conocimiento de cómo se toca una batería.
Despite his strange image and his lanky body, his staging was unique and original, he didn´t copy anyone and his particular unstable movements, which made one think that at any moment he was going to fall, caught the attention of Johnny and Dee Dee and they invited him to join the band they planned to form. Johnny on guitar, Dee Dee was singing and playing the other guitar and Joey was going to play the drums, rehearsals were a total mess, they sounded horrible. Fortunately for rock music, Dee Dee was unable to sing and play the guitar at the same time while Joey's height proved to be a real problem in playing the instrument. During their first concert, Joey couldn´t keep up with Johnny´s and Dee Dee's unbridled drumbeat and Tommy, their manager, suggested making some changes, put Dee Dee on bass, Johnny would continue on guitar, and Joey would be from now on henceforth the singer, they couldn´t find a drummer so the the band told Tommy to take the position and he accepted without having any knowledge of how to play drums.
Joey y Linda eran inseparables, el alto sentido del romanticismo de Joey lo hacía sentir una total fascinación por ella y era su inspiración para muchas canciones, por su parte, Linda se sentía afortunada de ser el centro de atención total de Joey, además de poder experimentar y vivir de cerca lo que era estar junto a una banda de rock. Aunque Joey solo tenía ojos para su chica, se la pasaba de juerga y borracho por lo cual no le dedicaba el suficiente tiempo, y Linda, era muy joven y egocéntrica y poco a poco se aburrió de él. Johnny, que vivía de cerca la situación y que ya le había echado el ojo a Linda, comenzó a acercarse a ella y lentamente se fueron enamorando uno del otro. Joey sentía la amenaza y le propuso matrimonio a Linda, ella aceptó pero exigió que le regalara un costoso anillo, cosa que no le gustó para nada a Joey porque eso significaba que ella era una interesada mientras que él buscaba un amor de verdad. Linda se enojó y desapareció por un tiempo.
Joey and Linda were inseparable, Joey's high sense of romanticism made him feel a total fascination for her and she was his inspiration for many songs, for her part, Linda felt lucky to be the center of Joey's total attention, besides being able to live and experience up close what it was like to be with a rock band. Although Joey only had eyes for her girl, he was partying and drunk most of the time so he didn't spend enough time with her, and Linda, she was very young and egocentric and little by little she got bored of him. Johnny, who was closely experiencing the situation and who had already had his eyes on Linda, began to approach her and they slowly fell in love with each other. Joey felt the threat and proposed to Linda, she accepted but demanded that he give her an expensive ring, Joey didn´t like that at all because it meant that she was only interested in luxuries while he was looking for true love. Linda got angry and disappeared for a while.
A su regreso, Joey se enteró que su gran amor ya tenía compañía y no era cualquier compañía, era el mismísimo Johnny, su compañero de banda. Joey no dijo nada, y en 1981, luego de dos años de relación con Linda y con el corazón destrozado aceptó la ruptura. A partir de ese momento dejó de hablarle a Johnny, se mantenía siempre a más de un metro de distancia y cuando inevitablemente tenía que decirle algo lo hacía a través de un intermediario. En relación a la drástica decisión de Joey de no dirigirle más la palabra, Johnny contó en su autobiografía, titulada, "Commando": "La verdad es que no congeniaba con Joey, pero no quería hacerle daño; no éramos amigos íntimos, sino socios laborales. Por otra parte, si la chica no quería seguir con él, ¿qué se supone que tenía que hacer, seguir de todos modos?". Producto de esta ruptura, surgió la canción que nos trae hoy aquí El KKK se llevó a mi chica.
Upon his return, Joey found out that his great love already had company and it wasn't just any company, it was Johnny himself, his bandmate. Joey said nothing, and in 1981, after two years of dating Linda and with a broken heart, he accepted the breakup. From that moment he stopped talking to Johnny, he always kept more than a meter away and when he inevitably had to say something to him he did it through an intermediary. Regarding Joey's drastic decision not to speak to him anymore, Johnny recounted in his autobiography, titled "Commando": "The truth is that I didn't get along with Joey, but I didn't want to hurt him; We weren´t close friends, but business partners. On the other hand, if the girl didn't want to go on with him, what was she supposed to do, go on anyway?". El Ku Klux Klan o KKK es una organización de extrema derecha fundada en el sur de Estados Unidos en 1865, al término de la guerra civil. Su principal propósito era defender la supremacía blanca, fomentar el racismo contra cualquiera que no fuese blanco y de religión protestante y promover actos de violencia, fue disuelto en 1871. En 1915 fue refundado, logrando tener para mediados de los años ´50 unos 4 millones de miembros y gran poder político en los Estados Unidos. En la actualidad las ideas del KKK siguen activas entre algunos grupos supremacistas aislados.
The Ku Klux Klan or KKK is a far-right organization founded in the southern United States in 1865, at the end of the civil war. Its main purpose was to defend white supremacy, promote racism against anyone who wasn´t white and of Protestant religion and promote acts of violence, it was dissolved in 1871. In 1915 it was refounded, managing to have by the mid-1950s about 4 million membership and great political power in the United States. Today KKK ideas are still active among some isolated supremacist groups.
Muchos se preguntarán, ¿qué tiene que ver el KKK con los Ramones? Bueno, antes de hablar de eso, empezaré diciéndoles que los Ramones son un ejemplo perfecto de lo que se conoce como el Yin y el Yang o los polos opuestos, en este caso, Joey y Johnny. Aunque un lío de faldas fue la gota que derramó definitivamente el agua del vaso, la verdad es que la relación entre Joey y Johnny nunca fue muy buena. Joey era judío, tenía una ideología progresista y se consideraba a sí mismo un liberal de izquierda, era tímido, frágil, vicioso, y romántico. Por su parte, Johnny era republicano, conservador y de ultraderecha, era extrovertido, fuerte, disciplinado y atrevido.
Many will wonder, what does the KKK have to do with the Ramones? Well, before I talk about that, I'll start by telling you that the Ramones are a perfect example of what is known as Yin and Yang or the polar opposites, in this case, Joey and Johnny. Although a love affair was the final straw, the truth is that the relationship between Joey and Johnny was never very good. Joey was Jewish, had a progressive ideology and considered himself a left liberal, he was shy, fragile, vicious, and romantic. For his part, Johnny was Republican, conservative and far right, he was outgoing, strong, disciplined and daring.
Sus diferencias ideológicas siempre fueron un motivo de discusión y después de la traición amorosa la situación fue llevada a los extremos. Joey, le sacó provecho a su desamor y compuso una canción para desahogar su sufrimiento. La canción empieza con un rabioso y pegajoso riff mientras Joey, con su barítona voz entre punk y melódica canta que su chica supuestamente se va de vacaciones pero a la final nunca regresa porque el Ku Klux Klan se la llevó, el KKK no es otro que Johnny, Joey utilizó esta metáfora para exagerar en forma de burla la postura ultraderechista de su compañero roba novias.
Their ideological differences were always a reason for discussion and after the love betrayal the situation was taken to extremes. Joey took advantage of his heartbreak and composed a song to vent his suffering. The song begins with an angry and catchy riff while Joey, with his baritone voice between punk and melodic, sings that his girl supposedly goes on vacation but in the end she never returns because the Ku Klux Klan took her away, the KKK is none other than Johnny, Joey used this metaphor to playfully exaggerate his girlfriend-stealing partner's ultraconservative stance.
Este incidente de faldas, muy común no solo en el mundo del rock sino en todos los ámbitos sociales, supuso un antes y un después en el mundo de la mítica banda de Nueva York. Un suceso que para la mayoría sería un despecho de unos cuantos meses, para el sensible corazón de Joey supuso algo que jamás pudo perdonar. Según Michael Leigh, hermano de Joey, lo que más le dolió a su hermano cuando se enteró de la relación de Linda con Johnny fue el hecho de que ninguno de los dos se sentó a hablar con él respecto a lo que había sucedido, y para él eso fue una señal de que no les importaba cómo se sentía Joey con lo que había pasado y eso fue lo que más le dolió, más allá de que su chica lo dejara. Resulta curioso ver que Joey dejó de hablarle a Johnny pero no a Linda, con quien por cierto siguió teniendo una relación cordial hasta sus últimos días. La pared que Joey levantó contra Johnny no fue el único cambio que experimentó la banda luego de eso. El disco que sacarían a finales de ese turbulento año presentaba tres novedades, era el primero que no tenía a la banda en la portada, que no incluía ninguna versión y donde los créditos de las canciones ya no aparecían en conjunto sino identificadas con el nombre de su autor.
This love betrayal, very common not only in the world of rock but in all social spheres, marked a before and after in the world of the legendary New York band. An event that for most would be a spite of a few months, for Joey's sensitive heart it was something he could never forgive. According to Michael Leigh, Joey's brother, what hurt his brother the most when he found out about Linda's relationship with Johnny was the fact that neither of them sat down to talk with him about what had happened, and to Joey that was a sign that they didn't care how he felt about what had happened, and that was what hurt him the most, beyond his girl leaving him. It´s curious to see that Joey stopped talking to Johnny but not to Linda, with whom by the way he continued to have a cordial relationship until his last days. The wall Joey put up against Johnny wasn't the only change the band experienced after that. The album that they would release at the end of that turbulent year presented three novelties, it was the first that didn´t have the band on the cover, that didn´t include any cover and where the credits of the songs no longer appeared together but were identified with the name of its composer.
Luego de lo ocurrido tenían que decidir qué iba a pasar con la banda, en este sentido, Linda Ramone, que unos años después, en 1984, se casaría con Johnny, permaneciendo juntos hasta la muerte del guitarrista, había declarado a FoxNews: "La gente siempre decía 'Oh, le rompió el corazón a Joey'. Imagínense seguir juntos en una banda luego de algo así durante 15 años más, seguir haciendo música, compartir en las giras, estar en el mismo autobús y dando conciertos sin dirigirse la palabra. Respecto a esto, Marky Ramone, el baterista de mayor duración que tuvo la banda, dijo en una ocasión: "En la camioneta, de gira, siempre había silencio, nadie hablaba. Yo les contaba un chiste y todos se reían. No podía soportarlo, así que tenía que animar la situación, crear un clima humorístico". Ciertamente que la música era lo más importante y sencillamente no podían dejarla y obviamente era de lo que vivían. Es importante resaltar que, a diferencia de otras bandas que se hicieron millonarias, los Ramones no tuvieron tanta suerte.
Imagine staying together in a band after something like this for 15 more years, continuing to make music, sharing tours, being on the same bus and giving concerts without speaking to each other. Regarding this, Marky Ramone, the band's longest-lasting drummer, once said: "In the van, on tour, there was always silence, no one spoke. I told them a joke and they all laughed. I couldn't stand it, so I had to spice things up, create a humorous atmosphere." Certainly music was the most important thing and they just couldn't give it up and obviously it was what they lived on. It´s important to note that, unlike other bands that became millionaires, the Ramones weren´t so lucky.
La vida continuó, los Ramones siguieron haciendo discos y giras. Su último disco salió en 1995 (Adiós Amigos) y el 6 de Agosto de 1996, en el Palace de Los Angeles, se despidieron de los escenarios. Los Ramones se disolvían. Ese día no hubo ni un apretón de manos entre Joey y Johnny, los dos únicos miembros originales de Los Ramones, los únicos que permanecieron en la banda desde el primero hasta el último día. Irónicamente, los dos que nunca se llevaron bien y que llevaban 15 años sin dirigirse la palabra.
Life went on, the Ramones kept making records and touring. Their last album came out in 1995 (Adiós Amigos) and on August 6, 1996, at the Palace in Los Angeles, they said goodbye to the stage. The Ramones disbanded. That day there wasn´t a single handshake between Joey and Johnny, the only two original members of The Ramones, the only who stayed in the band from the first to the last day. Ironically, the two who never got along and who hadn´t spoken to each other for 15 years.
En relación a esta canción existe una historia alternativa. Según Michael Leigh, hermano de Joey, la letra de El KKK se llevó a mi chica pudo estar inspirada en una joven afroamericana que su hermano conoció mientras estuvo internado en una institución psiquiátrica y con quien entabló una relación, cuando los padres de la chica se enteraron de esta relación interracial, se la llevaron, esto puso muy triste a Joey. Cuando su familia lo fue a visitar les dijo que el KKK se había llevado a su chica, en relación a los padres de ella. Como dato curioso, la chica que aparece en el video oficial de El KKK se llevó a mi chica es afroamericana. Puede que ese hecho haya servido de inspiración inicial para la canción, sin embargo y tomando en cuenta que Joey la terminó de escribir luego de terminar con Linda y poco antes de lanzar el disco Pleasant Dreams, la historia del triángulo amoroso sin duda es la que más encaja, ah! y no olvidemos el hecho de que a partir de ese momento Joey dejó de dirigirle la palabra a Johnny hasta el día de su muerte.
Regarding The KKK took my baby away, there is an alternate story. According to Joey's brother, Michael Leigh, the lyrics of The KKK took my baby away could have been inspired by a young African-American woman that his brother met while he was in a psychiatric institution and with whom he established a relationship, when girl´s parents found out about this interracial relationship, they took her away, this made Joey very sad. When his family went to visit him, he told them that the KKK had taken his girl, in relation to her parents. That fact may have served as the initial inspiration for the song, however, and considering that Joey finished writing it after breaking up with Linda and shortly before releasing the Pleasant Dreams album, the love triangle story is undoubtedly the one that more fits, oh! And let's not forget the fact that from then on Joey stopped talking to Johnny until the day he died.
Joey murió en el año 2001 a causa de un linfoma (cáncer linfático), Johnny no asistió al funeral, tiempo después dijo: "Yo estaba en California, no iba a viajar hasta Nueva York, pero de todas maneras no hubiese ido. No habría querido que él viniera a mi funeral tampoco. No me gustaría saber de él si me estuviera muriendo. Solo querría ver a mis amigos. Déjame morir y déjame en paz". Ante estas palabras cualquiera pensaría que la muerte de Joey no afectó en nada a Johnny, pues nada más lejos de la realidad. Aunque siempre se llevaron mal mientras se hablaban y ya habían pasado 20 años desde que dejaron de hacerlo, la muerte de Joey fue un golpe muy duro para Johnny. Apenas se enteró de la muerte de su ex compañero, Johnny cayó en una profunda depresión de la cual nunca se recuperó del todo, algo que según dijo en una entrevista, ni él mismo entendía porque siempre tuvieron una mala relación y nunca fueron buenos amigos, a lo que añadió que la semana que Joey murió fue la peor y más dura de su vida. El impacto de su muerte fue tan grande que hasta lamentó no haber hablado con Joey, se arrepentía de haberle robado la chica y hasta llegó a dudar de su amor por ella. Tres años después, en el 2004, Johnny fallecía víctima de un cáncer de próstata.
Joey died in 2001 due to lymphoma (lymphatic cancer), Johnny didn´t attend the funeral, later he said: "I was in California, I was not going to travel to New York, but I wouldn´t have gone anyway. I wouldn't have wanted him to come to my funeral either. I wouldn't want to hear from him if I was dying. I just want to see my friends. Let me die and leave me alone." Given these words, anyone would think that Joey's death didn´t affect Johnny at all, well, nothing could be further from the truth. Although they always didn't get along while talking to each other and it had been 20 years since they stopped talking, Joey's death was a very heavy blow for Johnny. As soon as he found out about the death of his ex-partner, Johnny fell into a deep depression from which he never fully recovered, something that, according to what he said in an interview, he himself didn´t understand because they always had a bad relationship and were never good friends, to which he added that the week that Joey died was the worst and hardest of his life. The impact of his death was so great that even he regretted not having talked to Joey, he regretted having stolen the girl from him and even came to doubt his love for her. Three years later, in 2004, Johnny died of prostate cancer.
El KKK se llevó a mi chica es una canción tan sencilla y tierna pero a la vez tan poderosa que es difícil no rendirse a su encanto, su riff es tan contagioso que te provoca querer escucharla varias veces. Su letra nunca será considerada una obra de arte pero la manera como utiliza la metáfora del Ku Klux Klan para hacer alusión al compañero de banda que le quitó a su chica, demuestra un uso muy inteligente del sentido del humor y el drama por parte de Joey como compositor. El titulo por si solo vale toda la canción. Es increíble saber como después de lo que pasó entre Joey y Johnny, los Ramones siguieron haciendo canciones increíbles y dando conciertos, la música fue la única comunicación entre ellos que no pudieron cortar.
The KKK took my baby away is a so simple and tender song but at the same time so powerful that it´s difficult not to surrender to its charm, its riff is so contagious that it makes you want to listen to it several times. Its lyrics will never be considered a masterpiece but the way Joey uses the KKK metaphor to allude to the bandmate who took his girl from him demonstrates a very clever use of humor and drama on Joey's part as a songwriter. The title alone is worth the whole song. It's amazing to know how after what happened between Joey and Johnny, the Ramones continued to make amazing songs and give concerts, music was the only communication between them that they couldn't cut.
