Heute ist Mikis Theodorakis im Alter von 96 Jahren gestorben. Den meisten ist er wohl durch die Filmmusik zum Film "Alexis Sorbas" bekannt (mit Anthony Quinn in der Hauptrolle), aber in seinem langen Leben hat er viel geschaffen, viel gekämpft - und viel gelitten.
Mikis Theodorakis died today at the age of 96. Most people probably know him for his music for the film "Alexis Zorba" (starring Anthony Quinn), but in his long life he created a lot, struggled a lot - and suffered a lot.
Seit seiner Kindheit wollte er Musik machen, und hatte auch erste Auftritte - aber dann kam der Zweite Weltkrieg dazwischen. Er war im Widerstand gegen den Nationalsozialismus und den nach Kriegsende stattfindenden Griechischen Bürgerkrieg, wurde mehrfach verhaftet und gefoltert. Erst ab 1950 konnte er sich der Musik widmen, studierte u.a. in Paris unter Olivier Messiaen. Dann kam 1967 der Militärputsch in seiner Heimat und die Militärdiktatur, Theodorakis tauchte unter und musste erleben, das wenige Wochen später mit dem Armeebefehl Nr. 13 das Hören und Singen seiner Musik mit Gefängnis bestraft wurde. Er wurde verhaftet, wieder gefoltert und erst nach hohem internationalen Druck freigelassen.
Since his childhood, he wanted to make music and also had his first performances - but then the Second World War started. He was in the resistance against National Socialism and during the Greek Civil War t (1947-49), and was arrested and tortured several times. It was not until 1950 that he was able to devote himself to music, studying in Paris under Olivier Messiaen, among others. Then came the military coup in his homeland in 1967 and the military dictatorship, Theodorakis went into hiding and had to experience that a few weeks later, with army order no. 13, listening to and singing his music was punished with imprisonment. He was arrested, tortured again and only released after great international pressure.
Die nächsten Jahre reiste er unermüdlich um die Welt, um auf das Schicksal seines Landes hinzuweisen und wurde so zum Symbol des griechischen Widerstandes gegen die Diktatur. Nach dem Ende der Diktatur widmete er sich mehr seiner Musik, versuchte aber weiterhin zu vermitteln, Griechenland zu helfen - ob es nun um die griechisch-türkischen Beziehungen ging oder einen höheren Stellenwert für Kultur und Erziehung.
For the next few years, he travelled tirelessly around the world to highlight the fate of his country, becoming a symbol of Greek resistance to the dictatorship. After the end of the dictatorship, he devoted more time to his music, but continued to try to mediate, to help Greece - whether it was Greek-Turkish relations or a higher priority for culture and education.
Mikis Theodorakis ist ein unglaublicher Mann, der in Griechenland einen lebenslangen Kampf für die Musik geführt hat, und zugleich für die Freiheit, die evidenterweise diese Musik begleiten muss. Ich bezweifle, ob es ein anderes Leben gegeben hat, das so stark die Zusammenhänge zwischen revolutionärer Kunst und politischer Freiheit aufzeigt. (Arthur Miller)
