Descubriendo a Lin-Manuel Miranda [esp/eng]

Algo que me encanta a nivel musical son las fusiones extrañas: Opera con Rap, música árabe con pop, llanera con rap, etc. Claro que estos son ejemplos, pero ya pueden ver a lo que me refiero. Por eso es que hoy quiero presentarles a un artista que me inspira mucho y que es una referencia para mi como compositora (que aún no lo soy, pero es una meta futura), conocí a este artista hace más de dos años y lo sigo amando, sigo obsesionada con su música. Les presento a: Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Lin-Manuel Miranda es un actor, compositor, dramaturgo y productor estadounidense. Algo que amo de él es que hace muchas cosas, pero hoy quiero abordar su faceta de compositor porque en mi opinión es la más brillante de todas. Lin-Manuel es el autor de dos de mis musicales de Broadway favoritos: In The Heights y Hamilton, pero también es compositor de dos soundtracks de películas de Disney que amo: Moana y Encanto.

Algo que me encanta es como rompe paradigmas mezclando diversos géneros musicales y en este sentido quiero hablar de 2 producciones en las que lo hizo: In The Heights y Hamilton.

Something I love at a musical level are the strange fusions: Opera with Rap, Arabic music with pop, llanera with rap, etc. Of course these are examples, but you can see what I mean. That's why today I want to introduce you to an artist that inspires me a lot and is a reference for me as a composer (which I'm not yet, but it's a future goal), I met this artist more than two years ago and I still love him, I'm still obsessed with his music. I present to you: Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Lin-Manuel Miranda is an American actor, composer, playwright and producer. One thing I love about him is that he does a lot of things, but today I want to tackle his songwriting side because in my opinion it is the most brilliant of them all. Lin-Manuel is the author of two of my favorite Broadway musicals: In The Heights and Hamilton, but he is also the composer of two Disney movie soundtracks that I love: Moana and Encanto.

Something I love is how he breaks paradigms mixing different musical genres and in this sense I want to talk about 2 productions in which he did it: In The Heights and Hamilton.

Este fue el musical debut para Lin-Manuel Miranda en Broadway. Por supuesto no voy a hablar de todos los aspectos de este musical porque este es un post sobre música, no sobre teatro así que vayamos al tema, pero antes me parece necesario que conozcan de que va este musical:

Washington Heights es un barrio latino en la ciudad de Nueva York (donde también creció Lin-Manuel Miranda). Esta es la historia de este barrio, sus habitantes, sus historias y como de un día para otro el barrio comienza a cambiar por completo: Cierran el salón de belleza, gente regresa a su país de origen, se muda la gente, etc. Es una historia plasmada de la sensación de añorar tus raíces, pero también de la sensación de querer alcanzar tus sueños.

La música está llena de ritmos latinos que combinan muy bien con el Hip-Hop y esto es algo bastante destacable porque las producciones de Broadway suelen ser muy clásicas utilizando géneros como el jazz y la ópera (y aunque amo estos géneros) también me encanta escuchar cosas innovadoras como estas. Cuando escuché por primera vez el Soundtrack de In The Heights tuve una reacción de: WAIT, WHAT?! Porque evidentemente es muy distinto a lo que suele hacerse en Broadway, cosa que me parece positiva para que incluso quienes no son amantes del teatro musical puedan escucharla.

Creo que lo más similar que había escuchado en cuanto a los ritmos latinos fue el soundtrack de West Side Story (Amor sin Barreras) de Stephen Sondheim, con canciones como “América” y “A Boy Like That/I Have a Love”, pero esto es otro nivel y me gusta cuando los compositores dejan pedazos de sí mismos en sus obras, en el caso de Lin-Manuel esto fue un homenaje a sus raíces ya que tiene ascendencia latina y creció en este barrio, así que sabía exactamente lo que estaba escribiendo.

Les recomendaré 3 canciones de este musical que me parecen muy disfrutables y expresan exactamente a lo que me refiero:

This was the debut musical for Lin-Manuel Miranda on Broadway. Of course I'm not going to talk about all the aspects of this musical because this is a post about music, not theater so let's get to the point, but first I think it's necessary for you to know what this musical is about:

Washington Heights is a Latino neighborhood in New York City (where Lin-Manuel Miranda also grew up). This is the story of this neighborhood, its inhabitants, their stories and how from one day to the next the neighborhood begins to change completely: the beauty salon closes, people return to their country of origin, people move away, etc. It is a story of the feeling of longing for your roots, but also the feeling of wanting to achieve your dreams.

The music is full of Latin rhythms that combine very well with Hip-Hop and this is something quite remarkable because Broadway productions are usually very classical using genres like jazz and opera (and although I love these genres) I also love to hear innovative things like this. When I first heard the Soundtrack to In The Heights I had a reaction of: WAIT, WHAT?! Because it's obviously very different from what's usually done on Broadway, which I think is a good thing so that even those who aren't musical theater lovers can listen to it.

I think the most similar thing I had heard in terms of Latin rhythms was the soundtrack of Stephen Sondheim's West Side Story (Love Without Barriers), with songs like "America" and "A Boy Like That/I Have a Love", but this is another level and I like when composers leave pieces of themselves in their works, in Lin-Manuel's case this was a tribute to his roots since he has Latin ancestry and grew up in this neighborhood, so he knew exactly what he was writing.

I will recommend 3 songs from this musical that I find very enjoyable and express exactly what I mean:

1. Carnaval del Barrio

El contexto de esta canción es que hubo un apagón en el barrio y ya tienen 3 días sin luz, aparte de que todo el mundo está deprimido porque el barrio está cambiando. Entonces viene Daniela, la peluquera del barrio quien se está mudando del barrio y les reclama por estar tan deprimidos. A raíz de esto se arma una fiesta a la que llaman: Carnaval del Barrio.

Es mi canción favorita de todo el soundtrack, es una explosión de ritmos latinos mezclados con rap y sus toques de notas clásicas de Broadway como podemos ver en la introducción.

The context of this song is that there was a blackout in the neighborhood and they already have 3 days without electricity, besides everyone is depressed because the neighborhood is changing. Then comes Daniela, the neighborhood hairdresser who is moving out of the neighborhood and complains to them for being so depressed. As a result of this, they throw a party called: Carnaval del Barrio (Carnival of the Neighborhood).

It is my favorite song of the whole soundtrack, it is an explosion of Latin rhythms mixed with rap and touches of classic Broadway notes as we can see in the introduction.

2. No me diga

Es común encontrar en Teatro Musical personajes cómicos que alivien el drama y en este caso el rol lo tienen Daniela, Carla y Cuca (si, es el nombre del personaje) quienes son unas chismosas de primera. Esta canción me encanta porque es la manera de dar ese toque cómico a la obra con ese ritmo latino que caracteriza a la música. Me gusta mucho que el soundtrack (y en particular esta canción) se siente muy de barrio, muy latino, muy familiar (algo con los que todos los que vivimos en un barrio latinoamericano podemos sentirnos identificados) pero no llega al punto de caer en estereotipos de barrio que pueden llegar a ser ofensivos e incluso incómodos de tratar, más bien todo es super agradable de escuchar. Se nota que Lin-Manuel sabía exactamente lo que estaba escribiendo.

It is common in Musical Theater to find comic characters that relieve the drama and in this case the role is played by Daniela, Carla and Cuca who are great gossips. I love this song because it is the way to give that comic touch to the play with that Latin rhythm that characterizes the music. I really like that the soundtrack (and in particular this song) feels very barrio, very Latin, very familiar (something that all of us who live in a Latin American barrio can identify with) but it doesn't get to the point of falling into barrio stereotypes that can be offensive and even uncomfortable to deal with, rather it's all super nice to listen to. You can tell Lin-Manuel knew exactly what he was writing about.

3. Breathe

La protagonista de esta canción es Nina, quien dejó la universidad en Stanford porque sufrió bastante xenofobia y ahora no sabe como decirle a sus padres y a la comunidad la decisión que tomó. El comienzo de esta canción y la parte del ensamble (que es la comunidad) es en español mientras que las partes de Nina son en inglés. El comienzo me recuerda mucho a las canciones de Simón Díaz, tienen esa energía de Papá que canta a sus niños y es algo que me gusta. La canción va subiendo poco a poco hasta que al final llega el punto de explosión de Nina, la parte más emotiva de la canción que honestamente es mi favorita. Es el punto en el que Nina cuenta su historia de ser siempre la niña perfecta y como teme decepcionar a todos.

Creo que esa subida paulatina y esa explosión final representan los sentimientos de Nina, como guardaba todo hasta que llegó el momento en el que explotó y tomó la decisión de abandonar Stanford (que fue una decisión impulsiva).

The protagonist of this song is Nina, who dropped out of college at Stanford because she suffered a lot of xenophobia and now does not know how to tell her parents and the community the decision she made. The beginning of this song and the part of the ensemble (which is the community) is in Spanish while Nina's parts are in English. The beginning reminds me a lot of Simón Díaz's songs, they have that energy of Dad singing to his children and that's something I like. The song builds up little by little until at the end comes Nina's explosion point, the most emotional part of the song which honestly is my favorite. It's the point where Nina tells her story of always being the perfect child and how she fears disappointing everyone.

I think that gradual rise and that final explosion represents Nina's feelings, how she kept everything in until the moment came when she exploded and made the decision to leave Stanford (which was an impulsive decision).

Desde que descubrí Hamilton, se ha convertido sin duda alguna en mi musical favorito. Incluso tengo todo un post reseñándolo en todos sus aspectos, pero hoy me voy a centrar únicamente en la música. Y es que Lin-Manuel Miranda pensó Hamilton no solo como un musical de Broadway, sino también como un álbum conceptual. Es por eso que puedes escuchar el álbum sin necesidad de ver el musical y aún así entender todo lo que sucede, lo cual a mi me gusta bastante sobre todo porque este es un álbum que he escuchado mucho mientras trabajo o voy en el transporte público. El musical no tiene diálogos, si no que las canciones saltan de la una a la otra así que al escuchar el álbum en el orden no te pierdes de nada de la historia.

Este fue el segundo musical de Lin-Manuel Miranda llevado a Broadway y siento que es la parte opuesta de In The Heights, ya que es ambientado en la época de la independencia y fundación de Estados Unidos así que realmente cumple con lo que propone: Ser un musical americano. Las canciones (y particularmente las letras) te llenan de esa sensación neoyorquina de querer cumplir tus sueños, querer luchar y aceptarnos todos como somos. Este parece un musical escrito después de haber pasado unos meses viviendo en el Bronx, lo cual es bastante irónico tomando en cuenta la época en la que está inspirado.

Si no sabes de que va este musical, sinceramente no sé que has hecho con tu vida jajajaja. Este cuenta la historia de Alexander Hamilton, uno de los padres fundadores de Estados Unidos y su participación en la guerra de independencia al igual que su vida familiar. Los principales géneros que impregnan este musical son el hip-hop, el jazz y el R&B, una mezcla sin duda bastante interesante que no te dejan dormirte en las casi 3 horas de duración de esta pieza.

Since I discovered Hamilton, it has undoubtedly become my favorite musical. I even have a whole post reviewing it in all its aspects, but today I'm going to focus only on the music. Lin-Manuel Miranda thought of Hamilton not only as a Broadway musical, but also as a concept album. That's why you can listen to the album without seeing the musical and still understand everything that happens, which I quite like especially because this is an album that I have listened to a lot while working or riding public transportation. The musical has no dialogue, but rather the songs jump from one to the next so by listening to the album in order you don't miss any of the story.

This was Lin-Manuel Miranda's second musical to be brought to Broadway and I feel it is the opposite of In The Heights, as it is set in the time of America's independence and founding so it really delivers what it sets out to do: Being an American musical. The songs (and particularly the lyrics) fill you with that New York feeling of wanting to fulfill your dreams, wanting to fight and accepting us all as we are. This seems like a musical written after having spent a few months living in the Bronx, which is quite ironic considering the era in which it is inspired.

If you don't know what this musical is about, I honestly don't know what you've done with your life hahahaha. It tells the story of Alexander Hamilton, one of the founding fathers of the United States and his participation in the war of independence as well as his family life. The main genres that permeate this musical are hip-hop, jazz and R&B, a mix without a doubt quite interesting that won't let you fall asleep in the almost 3 hours of duration of this piece.

1. My Shot

Es una canción sobre alzar la revolución para lograr los objetivos de libertad que se habían propuesto. Para mí esta es mi canción de levantarme el ánimo cuando me siento desmotivada, porque tiene una energía increíble de ¡Si se puede! ¡Vamos a lograrlo! Aquí te la dejo para que la escuches:

It's a song about raising the revolution to achieve the goals of freedom that they had set for themselves. For me this is my go-to song to lift my spirits when I feel unmotivated, because it has an incredible energy of "Si se puede! Let's do it! Here it is for you to listen to it:

2. Satisfied

En esta canción Angelica Schuyler nos cuenta como se enamoró por completo de Alexander Hamilton pero renunció a él por varias razones, entre esas su hermana. La canción comienza en la boda de Hamilton y su hermana, donde ella es la dama de honor y se ve muy feliz por hacer el brindis. Luego la canción retrocede al momento donde se conocieron y nos muestra que pasó realmente esa noche, esta vez desde la perspectiva de Angelica.

In this song Angelica Schuyler tells us how she fell completely in love with Alexander Hamilton but gave him up for several reasons, among them her sister. The song starts at the wedding of Hamilton and his sister, where she is the maid of honor and looks very happy to make the toast. Then the song flashes back to the moment where they met and shows us what really happened that night, this time from Angelica's perspective.

3. The Room where it happens

Esta es la canción más “Broadway” del álbum, al ser puro jazz. Es interpretada por Aaron Burr y refleja su envidia a Alexander Hamilton, al no ser invitado a una cena importante donde se discutirían asuntos de estado importantes.

Me encanta que tanto aquí como en varias canciones del álbum se utiliza un recurso muy utilizado en la ópera llamado Lay Motiv, que son frases o melodías muy características de un personaje que pueden repetirse a lo largo de la pieza. Podemos verlos en la enemistad de estos personajes, mientras que Alexander Hamilton siempre repite: “I ain’t not throwing away my shot” y “Just you wait”, Aaron Burr repite mucho “Talk less, Smile More” y “Wait for it”, mostrando lo distintos que son en personalidad. Hamilton es impulsivo y quiere hacer todo lo que está a su alcance y más, mientras que Burr es más cauteloso y quiere proteger lo que tiene. Esto es algo que yo no había notado hasta que vi un video de Jaime Altozano (a quien amo) en YouTube analizando Hamilton.

This is the most "Broadway" song on the album, being pure jazz. It is performed by Aaron Burr and reflects his envy of Alexander Hamilton, not being invited to an important dinner where important matters of state would be discussed.

I love that both here and in several songs on the album they use a device often used in opera called Lay Motiv, which are phrases or melodies very characteristic of a character that can be repeated throughout the piece. We can see them in the enmity of these characters, while Alexander Hamilton always repeats: "I ain't throwing away my shot" and "Just you wait", Aaron Burr repeats a lot "Talk less, Smile More" and "Wait for it", showing how different they are in personality. Hamilton is impulsive and wants to do everything in his power and more, while Burr is more cautious and wants to protect what he has. This is something I hadn't noticed until I saw a video of Jaime Altozano (whom I love) on YouTube analyzing Hamilton.

Como ya saben, Lin-Manuel Miranda no solo ha trabajado en Broadway sino que ha trabajado en muchos otros proyectos musicales incluyendo Disney. Fue del equipo compositor en Moana, un soundtrack que antes de saber que él formaba parte del equipo ya se había robado todo mi corazón. Y aquí es donde veo cual es la esencia del trabajo de Lin-Manuel Miranda: La cultura. En su trabajo siempre se adapta a la cultura de la historia y así en lugar de que todo suene igual, cada soundtrack tiene su propia personalidad. Lo mismo hizo en Encanto, usando incluso cumbia y vallenato para contar la historia. Y me encantó, incluso cuando yo por naturaleza odio el vallenato.

Por eso me inspira tanto Lin-Manuel Miranda como compositor, siento que está lleno de colores que comparte en sus composiciones. Una de las cosas que quiero hacer en la vida es escribir Teatro Musical y quiero ser así, innovar, mezclar géneros y utilizar melodías y ritmos para plasmar momentos importantes de la historia que esté escribiendo.

As you know, Lin-Manuel Miranda has not only worked on Broadway but has worked on many other musical projects including Disney. He was part of the composing team on Moana, a soundtrack that before I knew he was part of the team had already stolen my heart. And this is where I see the essence of Lin-Manuel Miranda's work: culture. In his work he always adapts to the culture of the story and so instead of everything sounding the same, each soundtrack has its own personality. He did the same in Encanto, even using cumbia and vallenato to tell the story. And I loved it, even though I naturally hate vallenato.

One of the things I want to do in life is write Musical Theater and I want to be like that, innovate, mix genres and use melodies and rhythms to capture important moments of the story I am writing.
