From the streets of Paris up to the concert stage
Von den Pariser Straßen auf die Bühne des Jazz
Ein fester Bestandteil von Madeleine Peyroux’s Programm ist der Song „Guilty" von Randy Newman. Grundsätzlich mit von der Partie, der Gitarrist Jon Herington und der Bassist Barak Mori. Das Lied schaffte es 2013 auf das Album „The Blue Room". Warum gerade Guilty? Madame Peyroux erklärte es einmal so: „Für mich gibt es nur drei Arten von Liedern: solche über die Liebe, solche über den Blues und solche über das Trinken. Und mein Lieblingslied schafft es, alle drei Themen unter einen Hut zu bringen. Und dafür danke ich Randy Newman.“
An essential part of Madeleine Peyroux’s programme is the song "Guilty" by Randy Newman. Basically, the guitarist Jon Herington and the bassist Barak Mori are involved. The song made it onto the album "The Blue Room" in 2013. Why Guilty in particular? Madame Peyroux once explained it this way: "For me, there are only three kinds of songs: those about love, those about the blues and those about drinking. And my favourite song manages to bring all three themes under one hat. And for that I thank Randy Newman."

Begonne hat Madeleine Peyroux übrigens als Straßenmusikerin, was an einigen Arrangements noch einwandfrei herauszuhören ist.

Madeleine Peyroux started out as a street musician, which can still be perfectly heard in some of the arrangements.
Nicht, wie man vom Namen her rückschließen könnte, klammert sich Madeleine Peyroux an kanadische oder französische Wurzeln – weit gefehlt, denn sie wurde 1973 in Athens/Georgia geboren. Erst sehr viel später zog sie mit ihrer Mutter nach Paris, wo sie als 17-Jährige sich bei den dort aus allen Nationen vertretenen Straßenmusikern einen Namen machte. Eines Tages traf sie auf die aus New York stammende The Lost Wandering Blues & Jazz Band, schloss sich der Formation an und traf so auf Yves Beauvais von Atlantic Records.
Madeleine Peyroux does not, as one might infer from her name, cling to Canadian or French roots - far from it, because she was born in Athens/Georgia in 1973. Much later, she moved with her mother to Paris, where she made a name for herself as a 17-year-old among the street musicians there, who came from all nations. One day she came across The Lost Wandering Blues & Jazz Band from New York, joined the formation and thus met Yves Beauvais from Atlantic Records.
Dieser nahm Madeleine Peyroux, die damals gerade mal 22 Jahre alt war, unter Vertrag und produzierte mit ihr das Debütalbum „Dreamland". Die Kritik war buchstäblich aus dem Häuschen, von der Hingabe, wie diese junge Dame mit der rauchigen Stimme, die Klassiker von Billy Holiday, Bessie Smith oder Ella Fitzgerald interpretierte.
Das Album verkaufte sich über 200.000 Mal und plötzlich wurde sie von der Straße auf die Konzertbühne katapultiert, auf der sie mit Sarah McLachlin und Cesária Évora auftrat.
Madeleine Peyroux, who was only 22 years old at the time, signed a contract and produced her debut album „Dreamland“. The critics were literally blown away by the dedication with which this young lady with the smoky voice interpreted classics by Billy Holiday, Bessie Smith or Ella Fitzgerald.
The album has sold over 200,000 copies and suddenly she was catapulted from the street to the concert stage, where she performed with Sarah McLachlin and Cesária Évora.
So plötzlich der Erfolg auch gekommen sein mag, so rasch erkannte die junge Künstlerin jedoch auch, dass es in diesem Tempo nicht weitergehen konnte. Sie nahm sich eine Auszeit, die acht Jahre andauern sollte. Dann, inzwischen 30-jährig, veröffentlichte sie ihr zweites Album „Careless Love". Es folgten in recht kurzem Abstand „Half The Perfect World“ (2006), „Bare Bones“ (2009), „Standing On The Roof Top“ (2011) und „The Blue Room“ (2013) - bis sie schließlich 2016 mit „Secular Hymns“ ein aufregendes neues Kapitel aufschlug.
As sudden as the success may have come, however, the young artist also quickly realized that she could not continue at this speed. She took time off, which was to last eight years. Then, at the age of 30, she released her second album "Careless Love". Half The Perfect World" (2006), "Bare Bones" (2009), "Standing On The Roof Top" (2011) and "The Blue Room" (2013) followed in fairly short succession - until she finally opened an exciting new chapter in 2016 with "Secular Hymns".

Lovely voice, love how it lilts. I was listening to one of her albums the other day, always good to have on when I'm playing about with brushes and paints.
Now this was fun to come across. I have not heard of her before, but she definitely has a nice sound to her! Love the music, and can imagine myself really appreciating this in a cafe or small club. And she sang a Leonard Cohen song! Really lovely.
